During its further development education in veteri- nary medicine was integrated into the Medical Faculty, with regular classes starting in 1828. Admittance to qualify for a higher veterinary education required a “highschool diploma” (Matura), at the same time the Medical Faculty was granted the right of promotion to a “Dr. in arte veterinaria”. In 1914 the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine emerged as an independent faculty. As a result of the destructions in World War II and the political situation, the “Ludwigs- Universität” was suspended with the exception of the Faculties of Veteri- nary Medicine and Agricultural Sciences, leading to the formation of a College for the Culturing of Soil and for Veterinary Medicine (Hochschule für Bodenkultur und Veter- inärmedizin). This college formed a nucleus for the restoration of the whole univer- sity, which was re-founded in 1957 and given the new name “Justus-Liebig- Universität Gießen” in honour of the great scientist Justus von Liebig, who acted as a professor in chemistry for 28 years from 1824 to 1852. According to the Hessian University Law of 1971, the structure of universities into faculties was abandoned and replaced by the division into “Fachbereiche” (depart- ments). However, other than most faculties, the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine main- tained its integrity and only changed the name from “Faculty” to “Fachbereich”. With the restructuring of the former Agricultural Faculty in 1985 the Institute of Animal Breeding and Genetics of Domestic Animals was moved from the Faculty of Veteri- nary Medicine to the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences, Nutritional Sciences and Envi- ronmental Management. These organisational changes, however, did not affect the involvement of the Institute of Animal Breeding and Genetics of Domestic Animals in the veterinary curriculum. This involvement is based on strong academic interrela- tionships. Similar interrelationships exist with other institutes of the Justus-Liebig- University Giessen which have led to a fruitful interdisciplinary cooperation. The Faculty was submitted to a first EAEVE-evaluation from November 29 th to De- cember 2 nd , 1993 and a second evaluation from June 23 rd – 28 th June 2003. Both evaluations resulted in an “approval”. However, only draft reports and no final reports had been provided to the Faculty and the final decision was only communicated ver- bally resp. by putting the Faculty on the list of positively evaluated faculties. This situation has made it somewhat difficult to communicate the result of the evaluations to the respective authorities and it would be highly appreciated if a final report could be provided as a result of the forthcoming visit.

    Otto Eger: „herzensguter Mensch“, Mitläufer oder „Nazi“? Zur Kontroverse um den Gießener Juristen Peter Gruhne Den „lauteren und unbestechlichen Charakter“ Otto Egers lobt Max Kaser in seinem Nachruf und bezeichnet den am 11. April 1949 ver- storbenen Gießener Juristen als „warmfühlenden und herzensguten Menschen“.1 Auch Friedrich Weber bestätigt in seinem Nekrolog dieses Urteil und spricht im Hinblick auf seinen ehemaligen Lehrer Eger vom „Vertrauen seiner Kollegen“, von der „Liebe der Studenten“ und der „Lauterkeit seiner Persönlichkeit“.2 Der „treueste der Treuen“, wie Karl Engisch den Gießener Ordinarius noch 1957 aus Anlass der 350-Jahr-Feier der Universität nennt,3 weil er über 30 Jahre – von 1918 bis zu seinem Tod 1949 - in Gießen wirkte, 1 Kaser, Max: Otto Eger †, in: Nachrichten der Gießener Hochschulgesellschaft, Bd. 18, 1949, S. 94-103, hier: S. 103. Landgrave Ludwig V. of Hesse-Darmstadt initiated the foundation of a Lutheran university in Gießen as there was a need to train Lutheran pastors and civil servants, when the nearby University of Marburg became Calvinist. Soon after teaching started in October 1607, the Thirty Years War erupted, and the Ludoviciana closed temporarily. It was restored in Gießen in 1650 with the four usual faculties: Theology, Law, Medicine, and Arts. Limited nancial resources restricted reform eorts in the eighteenth century so that there was little change until the very end of the century. Still, notably a faculty of economics existed from 1777–1785. Its tradition continued in the faculties of medicine and philosophy. 2 Sources The chronicle of the University of Gießen has been published in two books: (Haupt and Lehnert 1907) includes the history of the Ludoviciana between 1607 and 1907, while (Rehmann 1957) focuses on the following 50 years. As we are interested in the pre-1800 period, we rely on the book by (Haupt and Lehnert 1907).
