Dear Prime Minister,

Since launching this campaign on Monday, the Save Our Summer Travel Action Group is now backed by 735 companies of all sizes, from self-employed travel agents, to long-standing, large players in the industry, who employ many thousands of people.

We represent over £24bn in sales and we are united behind one single message; that a targeted route out of lockdown needs to be announced in your speech on Monday specifically for the travel industry.

The UK’s exceptional vaccination rollout continues to gather pace and I congratulate the Prime Minister once again for beating his initial target of 15th Feb to vaccinate the 15 million most vulnerable people in this country. This was a magnificent and historic achievement.

I was pleased to hear the Prime Minister say this week that he will base his roadmap on data.

We have set a target date for reopening safely from 1st May based on the data we have access to:

• By the end of April, 99% of those at risk of dying from COVID will be protected with at least one vaccination, Dominic Raab reconfirmed on Wednesday. • By 1st May, 32 million people will have had at least one jab, and over 20 million people will have had both jabs. • In fact, the Govt is on target to protect all 32 million people by 6th April. • UK daily infections have reduced dramatically from 76,000 on 15th Jan to 11,000 on 19th Feb and are forecast to drop below 1,000 cases per day in April. • Summer seasonality must also be considered, as we saw in 2020, with cases dropping without a vaccination in existence.

We therefore believe our proposal is rational, reasonable and most importantly responsible.

Surveying the many companies backing our campaign this week brought to reality the severity of the impact that no roadmap could have on our industry. The majority of operators expect to lay off at least 20% of their workforce, which equates to 500,000 jobs being made redundant, in a sector which employs 1 in 10 people in the UK economy.

However, should you provide our sector with the clarity it so desperately needs right now, 74% of companies said they would hire more employees and/or rehire those on furlough.

We appreciate that there may be further bumps in the road, and as an industry we are well prepared – offering exceptional booking flexibility for consumers, to protect their interests and enable them to plan future trips, as soon as clarity is given and confidence reignites.

The travel sector cannot be opened up like a hairdresser’s salon overnight. Airlines, for instance, need months of lead time in order to operate any kind of summer capacity.

We have every faith that you will rise to the challenge, give our sector real clarity on Monday and lead the travel industry back to prosperity, protecting at least half a million jobs in the process.
