PLACING THE CARDSTON TEMPLE IN EARLY MORMON TEMPLE ARCHITECTURAL HISTORY By Amanda Buessecker A Thesis Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Master of Arts Degree in Art History Carleton University May 2020 Supervisor: Peter Coffman, Ph.D. Carleton University ii Abstract: The Cardston temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints represents a drastic shift in temple architecture of the early Mormon faith. The modern granite structure was designed not to show a mere difference of aesthetic taste, but as an embodiment of the evolving relationship between the Mormon pioneers and the American government. Earlier temples, erected in the nineteenth century throughout the valleys of Utah, were constructed by Mormon pioneers at a time when the religious group desired to separate themselves from the United States physically, politically, and architecturally. When the temple was built in Cardston, Alberta (1913-1923), it was a radical departure from its medievalist predecessors in Utah. There was a contribution given by the people of Nauvoo to assist the community to purchase the Temple property – testimony of Bartholomy Serreau [Nauvoo] The original detailed historical MANUSCRIPT DEPOSITIONS SIGNED by Icarians and their attorney, in the lawsuit which secured the Nauvoo Temple lot and related properties to the Icarian Society, enabling the continuation of this famous communitarian movement well beyond the 1856 death of their founder, Etienne Cabet. CHAPTER 2 BACKGROUND HISTORY Paul A. Shackel INTRODUCTION Juliet Walker’s (1983) book, Free Frank: A Black Pioneer on the Antebellum Frontier , provides significant information about Free Frank McWorter and his experience related to the founding and early development of New Philadelphia until his death in 1854. Other monographs provide overviews of the McWorter family and/or the community’s past. These include: Grace Matteson (1964) “Free Frank” McWorter and the “Ghost Town” of New Philadelphia, Pike County, Illinois ; Helen McWorter Simpson’s (1981) Maker’s of History; and Larry Burdick’s (1992) New Philadelphia: Where I Lived . The goal of the current New Philadelphia Archaeology Project is to further explore the story unfolding about the town by providing additional information about the social history of the entire community, and documenting the rise of the town from 1836 through its demise during the Jim Crow era in the early twentieth century. Using historical information, oral histories, and archaeological information, the project explores the physical and social development of the town and explores some of the social relations in the community through the early twentieth century. This work also shows how individuals of African–American and European–American heritage view this community’s past. The archaeological, historical, and oral history data contribute information related to an important episode of past social and racial relations that should be a vital component of our national public memory. EARLY SETTLEMENT OF ILLINOIS Most of the early European settlers of Illinois came from states south of the Ohio River, and they established communities by waterways where they had easy access to transportation, power sources, and food. -
NAUVOO's TEMPLE It Was Announced August 31, 1840, That A
NAUVOO’S TEMPLE Dean E. Garner—Institute Director, Denton, Texas t was announced August 31, 1840, that a temple would be built, and Iarchitectural plans began to come in. Joseph Smith “advertised for plans for the temple,” William Weeks said, “and several architects presented their plans. But none seemed to suit Smith. When [William] presented his plans, Joseph Smith grabbed him, hugged him and said, ‘You are the man I want.’”1 Thus William was made superintendent of temple construction. All his work was cleared by the temple building committee. Those on the committee were Reynolds Cahoon, Elias Higbee, and Alpheus Cutler.2 Joseph Smith had the final say pertaining to the details of the temple, for he had seen the temple in vision, which enabled him to make decisions on the temple’s appearance.3 During the October Conference of 1840, the building of the Nauvoo During the temple was voted on and accepted by the saints. Prospectus William Weeks and the Ephemeral Temple at Nauvoo Central to the early Mormon concept of the City of Zion was the temple. Confronting violent opposition in Ohio and Missouri, in 1839 the Mormons fled to their new Zion at Nauvoo, Illinois situated along a horseshoe bend on the eastern bank of the Mississippi River. In 1840, work on a new temple commenced which would define and establish the permanency of Mormonism. The primitive theology and ritual surrounding the first Mormon temple in Ohio, developed and evolved for the more grandiose temple planned at Nauvoo. However, as Joseph Smith introduced new and controversial doctrines violent opposition increased from both inside and outside the Church. The temple rituals adapted with the expanding doctrine and necessitated an increasingly complex architectural program both on the temple’s interior and exterior. The larger Nauvoo Temple, while generally following the established prototype at Kirtland, assumed new functions and forms not anticipated during its initial planning and construction. The thesis will reexamine William Weeks’s involvement as architect in the design and construction of the Nauvoo temple, in collaboration with Joseph Smith. In particular, as architect, William Weeks materialized a definitive moment in Mormonism’s evolving cultural identity by reshaping ritual space, establishing Mormon material identity and introducing mystery and complexity in the ephemeral Nauvoo temple (1841-1846). The Nauvoo temple became the iconic symbol of Mormonism’s revolutionary doctrinal teachings during the Nauvoo period. Mays The following photographic essay and tribute were part of a media pre- sentation at a banquet held in the Joseph Smith Memorial Building on May 28, 2009, honoring the life and contributions of Wilford C. Wood. The event was sponsored by the LDS Church History Department and the Mormon His- toric Sites Foundation. The number of historic LDS Church history sites, documents, and arti- facts acquired by Wilford C. Wood during his lifetime is impressive. How- ever, perhaps his greatest legacy will be his purchase of some of the most well known early Mormon history sites owned by the Church today. Signifi- cantly, when Wilford C. Wood was born in 1893, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints did not hold title to a single site where a revelation in the Doctrine and Covenants was received or recorded. However, as a result of his years of vision and service, the Church eventually came to own the property or location where forty-eight sections of the Doctrine and Covenants were received. Some of the sites now owned by the Church include the Nauvoo Temple property, Liberty Jail, Adam-ondi-Ahman, the Joseph Smith and Isaac Hale properties in Harmony (now Oakland), Pennsylvania, the John Johnson home in Hiram, Ohio, the Newel K. -

Fullmer1 In 1840, the Latter-day Saints began to build an impressive limestone temple at Nauvoo, Illinois.2 However, progress on the temple was slow. Four years later, in June 1844, the walls were only half way up when Joseph Smith, President of the Church, and his brother Hyrum, Patriarch to the Church, died at the hands of a mob in the county jail at Carthage, Illinois. After the Saints’ initial shock and sorrow had subsided, the tragedy galvanized their resolve to finish the House of the Lord under the direction of Brigham Young and the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles.
