New Academic Calendar: Motion Queried In his recent statement concerning the academic calendar, Dr. Richard Murphy, president of the Faculty Senate, claimed that sti'dents were spending 10-15 per cent more time learning the same course in the spring as taught in the fall. For this, and other reasons, he feels that it is necessary to change the calendar to make it equitable for both students and faculty members. However, his proposal has brought consternation to both students and administrators alike. Rather than simply compensating for the several days difference in the calendar, Murphy wishes to change the whole calendar to alleviate the problem. It is these changes that must be reviewed and considered for their feasibility in ac• complishing the equitability that Murphy stated was needed. The initial change affecting all students and faculty, would be the conclusion of the first semester the day before Christmas. Citing that not all students would be going home on that day Murphy justified the inconvenience of the few for the benefit of the many. Yet, under the present calendar, students are able to leave school on the last exam day and still have time to make it home before the holiday; even the few are given an optimal amount of time to arrive home.

Whereby, the question of making the calendar to fit the desires of the many brings to light another thought. Is the new calendar being News Analysis: designed with students inmind? It has to be wondered if any consideration was given to the students who do not live on the East Side or up in North Providence. Yes, faculty members might be able to drive home on December 24, in time for the next day's merriment, but will many of the students be able to do the same? 'Rat' Conditions Were Another point in Murphy's proposed calendar which has to be considered is the extensive vacation which would be allowed be• tween the semesters.
