  • Bestseller Lists and Product Variety
Bestseller Lists and Product Variety Alan T. Sorensen∗ July 2006 Abstract This paper uses detailed weekly data on sales of hardcover fiction books to evaluate the impact of the New York Times bestseller list on sales and product variety. In order to circum- vent the obvious problem of simultaneity of sales and bestseller status, the analysis exploits time lags and accidental omissions in the construction of the list. The empirical results indi- cate that appearing on the list leads to a modest increase in sales for the average book, and that the effect is more dramatic for bestsellers by debut authors. The paper discusses how the additional concentration of demand on top-selling books could lead to a reduction in the privately optimal number of books to publish. However, the data suggest the opposite is true: the market expansion effect of bestseller lists appears to dominate any business stealing from non-bestselling titles. ∗Stanford University and NBER; [email protected]. I am thankful to the Hoover Institution, where much of this research was conducted, and to Nielsen BookScan for providing the book sales data. The research has benefitted from helpful conversations with Jim King, Phillip Leslie, and Joel Sobel, among many others. Scott Rasmussen provided excellent research assistance. Any errors are mine. 1 1 Introduction The perceived importance of bestseller lists is a salient feature of multimedia industries. Weekly sales rankings for books of various genres are published in at least 40 different newspapers across the U.S., and “making the list” seems to be a benchmark of success for authors.

  • Monthly Highlights from TBBC
Monthly Highlights from TBBC January 2021 TALKING BOOK & BRAILLE CENTER A MESSAGE FROM THE NEW JERSEY STATE LIBRARIAN This will be my last newsletter message. I will be retiring on January 31st. Jennifer Nelson has been named as the next State Librarian. I have been reflecting on the past eight years. While I believe that the State Library has made many advances across the state, none has been as positive and fulfilling as the services to you, our TBBC patrons. You can go to public libraries in almost every county for help to download books and magazines. TBBC can now send multiple books on a single cartridge and TBBC is now piloting a Braille device that fits into the palm of your hand. Such advances are truly remarkable and will get better. So as I leave a job I love, I love that you can now get “any book, any time.” Take care and be safe. Thank you, Mary Mary L. Chute New Jersey State Librarian NEW JERSEY STATE LIBRARIAN – JENNIFER NELSON Thomas Edison State University (TESU) announced that Jennifer R. Nelson has been chosen to serve as the new State Librarian for the New Jersey State Library (NJSL), an affiliate of TESU. TESU President, Dr. Merodie A. Crooked Kingdom Leigh Bardugo Reviewed by: Paufa Phanachet, 14 Star Teen Book Reviewer of Be the Star You Are! Charity www.bethestaryouare.org Crooked Kingdom is the final book in the Six of Crows duology. After pulling off the heist of the century, Kaz Brekker and his crew are back to fighting for their lives. Doublecrossed, Kaz finds his most prized possession taken away from him. The crew is low on resource, allies and hope. The highly addictive drug, Juda Parem, which turns Grishas incredibly powerful is still a mystery to be solved. Old and new enemies arise as blood will be shed on the streets of Ketterdam. As always with this series, I love the characters. Kaz Brekker, the anti-hero, who is just so awesome. In this book, we get to see a more vulnerable side to him. We learn more about his backstory and his history. It makes his character seem more real and we see the motivation behind some of his actions. The plot is still very much the YA novel that this series always was. It is kind of interesting, but it is not as thought-provoking as it could be. This is a book that I would recommend for tweens to teens. There is death, sex trafficking and PTSD, but it is not very gory. I would only recommend you to read it or buy it for someone if they or you have read Six of Crows already. It is based a lot on the first book and reading that before would really help understand the story.

  • Graphic Novels: Enticing Teenagers Into the Library
School of Media, Culture and Creative Arts Department of Information Studies Graphic Novels: Enticing Teenagers into the Library Clare Snowball This thesis is presented for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy of Curtin University of Technology March 2011 Declaration To the best of my knowledge and belief this thesis contains no material previously published by any other person except where due acknowledgement has been made. This thesis contains no material which has been accepted for the award of any other degree or diploma in any university. Signature: _____________________________ Date: _________________________________ Page i Abstract This thesis investigates the inclusion of graphic novels in library collections and whether the format encourages teenagers to use libraries and read in their free time. Graphic novels are bound paperback or hardcover works in comic-book form and cover the full range of fiction genres, manga (Japanese comics), and also nonfiction. Teenagers are believed to read less in their free time than their younger counterparts. The importance of recreational reading necessitates methods to encourage teenagers to enjoy reading and undertake the pastime. Graphic novels have been discussed as a popular format among teenagers. As with reading, library use among teenagers declines as they age from childhood. The combination of graphic novel collections in school and public libraries may be a solution to both these dilemmas. Teenagers’ views were explored through focus groups to determine their attitudes toward reading, libraries and their use of libraries; their opinions on reading for school, including reading for English classes and gathering information for school assignments; and their liking for different reading materials, including graphic novels.

  • Audience Engagement on Twitter: the Rijneveld Translation Controversy
Audience Engagement on Twitter: The Rijneveld Translation Controversy Laura Gurwin Master of Art: Media and Communication: Culture, Collaborative Media, and Creative Industries Master’s Thesis, One-year Master | 15 Credits | Year: 2021 Supervisor: Signe Ivask Examiner: Alessandro Nani Examination date: June 1, 2021 Grade Awarded: A Word count: 14,686 ABSTRACT Much research exists on cancel culture and cultural gatekeeping. However, there is little research on more recent examples of cancel culture stemming from the Netherlands. The current study sought to examine how active Twitter users have responded to what I have titled, the Rijneveld translation controversy on Twitter. This controversy involves questions of racism or reverse racism after a Dutch White translator, Marieke Lucas Rijneveld, reversed their decision to translate works of the African-American writer, Amanda Gorman after receiving much backlash from the public. This was followed by debates on Twitter causing an uproar. Therefore, the objective of this study was to examine the different issue- frames tweeted about by active Twitter users through a qualitative content analysis. In order to inquire into the opinions addressed at various stages of the controversy, tweets were collected over the course of three different time periods. A general observation was that a majority of Twitter users were upset by the pushback Rijneveld received and even regarded the situation as an example of “reverse racism” and radical wokeism. Moreover, several different actors/stakeholders were targeted or “called-out” by the “Twitter mob,” including the Dutch journalist, Janice Deul who led part of the pushback against Rijneveld. These issues are substantially less about the art and craft of translation and reflect a broader societal issue that Twitter users felt a need to address through this controversy.
