OMAR RIBEIRO THOMAS Assinatura do Orientador CAMPINAS 2013 iii iv v vi Resumo O presente trabalho é fruto dos aprendizados ao longo do curso de mestrado e de três meses de trabalho de campo na África do Sul. O trabalho foi desenvolvido com foco no cotidiano de algumas mulheres negras, moradoras da região de KwaZulu-Natal e falantes de isiZulu , através dos diversos grupos dos quais fazem parte. Estes estão ligados a funerais e maneiras de poupar dinheiro – nos quais se encontram periodicamente para guardar certa quantia que poderá ser utilizada quando precisarem para os grandes custos de funerais ou rituais para os ancestrais –, como também relacionados ao ganho de recursos pela venda de artesanatos feitos de miçangas, alimentos produzidos em hortas comunitárias ou na criação de galinhas. A partir dessas experiências é também feita nesta dissertação uma discussão sobre a própria forma de se fazer e escrever a pesquisa. Ao usar no texto elementos trazidos de diversas formas de conhecimento, como a literatura, o trabalho de campo e alguns filmes, tentei demonstrar aquilo que aprendi com as pessoas que me receberam, de uma forma que pudesse espelhar a complexidade da vida e transpirar as confusões supostas em se estar na África do Sul. A escolha da narrativa tem como intenção ser instrumento que desenha a importância da terra e da ancestralidade, e de tudo que a ela está vinculado politicamente, na vida das mulheres e casas que me acolheram ao longo da pesquisa. Assim como nas próprias relações traçadas a partir das diferenças de língua e de cor. A ideia é construir conhecimento antropológico de uma forma em que a narrativa faça parte da reflexão, contando as estórias das pessoas que encontrei em diversas linguagens. O pressuposto aqui é, pois, de que é possível que a própria narrativa faça parte da construção de uma linguagem do conhecimento científico e analítico que se paute nas formas com que as próprias interlocutoras de campo pensam suas vidas. 7 8 Sumary This work is a result of master’s course and of the three months of field work developed in South Africa on 2011. The work was done with focus on the daily activities of black women living in KwaZulu-Natal, isiZulu speakers, through the various groups which they are part of. Those groups are linked to funerals issues and to save money - meeting periodically to get money that can be used when needed for the large costs of funerals or rituals for the ancestors - as well as resources related to gain income from saling handicrafts made of beads, food grown in community gardens or raising chickens. From these experiences, it is also made here a discussion about doing and writing a research, for that, it is used along the dissertation elements brought from various forms of knowledge, such as literature, field work and some movies. In doing so, I tried to show what I learned from the people who received me in a way that could reflect the complexity of life and evidence the confusions supposed on being in South Africa. The narrative choices are intended to be an instrument that draws the importance of land and ancestry, and all that is politically linked to them, in the women's lives and homes which welcomed me along the search. Such as the relationships themselves drawn from the differences of language and color. The idea is to build anthropological knowledge in a way that the narrative is a part of the reflection, telling the stories of the people I met in several languages guided by what really care for the women and what they chose to tell me. 9 10 Antiga poesia Minha nova poesia é antiga poesia. Clementina, Leci e Jovelina, salve! Nortistas, caribenhas, clandestinas, salve negras da América Latina. A baixa auto-estima da Dona Maria, da sua filha, da sua prima e sua vizinha, isso me alucina, isso me intriga, isso me instiga e cê não entende o que significa feminista? Esquento a barriga no fogão, esfrio na bacia. Cuido do filho do patrão, minha filha tá sozinha, a mão tá no trampo, a mente tá na filha. Um monte de gaiato em volta ainda pequenina. Porque depois dos quarenta é de casa para a igreja é tudo por ninharia, pretende Jesus o mesias. Tive que trabalhar, não pude parar, guerreira, estadeira, capoeira, na ginga. Disseram pra neta, que a vó era analfabeta, o mundão tá doido acaba, mas ela não. Minha vó formou na vida e nunca soube o que é reprovação. Eis a questão. Se não me espelhou, não chamo de educação.     SKIN and Human Rights Consider the following statements that were true of life under Apartheid for Sandra Laing. While some of them to not refer to an injustice that Sandra suffered directly, they may underline what the general black population had to put up with. It is your job to decide which you feel describes the worst abuse of human rights and which the least. Rearrange the list in order of seriousness. Your choices will be subjective and so there is no absolute correct answer: 1. Sandra was born into a country where her race was classified at her birth. To be ‘white’ meant she would enjoy special privileges denied people of other skin colours – especially black South Africans. 2. Sandra grew up enjoying all the privileges of someone born to white parents – she enjoyed better accommodation (a room to herself), toys (her doll) and sanitation than her black playmates who went home each evening to their make-shift homes in the nearby township which probably lacked space and running water. 3. Education for blacks and whites was vastly different. Sandra could expect to be taught in smaller classes by more effective and better paid teachers than her black friends. The amount the state would spend on her schooling would be about three times as much as that spent on a black child of the same age. Schools were segregated and Sandra’s white education would prepare her for jobs that her black friends could only dream about. Typically, black children would receive a ‘Bantu’ education preparing them for unskilled manual jobs and domestic service.

    Skin questions SKIN is one of the most moving stories to emerge from apartheid South Africa: Sandra Laing is a black child born in the 1950s to white Afrikaners, unaware of their black ancestry. Her parents are rural shopkeepers serving the local black community, who lovingly bring her up as their ‘white’ little girl. But at the age of ten, Sandra is driven out of white society. The film follows Sandra’s thirty-year journey from rejection to acceptance, betrayal to reconciliation, as she struggles to define her place in a changing world. The African National Congress Youth League (ANCYL) was established on 2 April 1944, by Anton Lembede (who became the League’s first President), Nelson Mandela, Ashley Mda, Walter Sisulu and Oliver Tambo. The Youth League’s Manifesto was launched at the Bantu (Black African) Men’s Social Centre in Johannesburg in March 1944 ahead of its inaugural (first) meeting. It stated, amongst others, that Africanism should be promoted (i.e. Africans should struggle for development, progress and national liberation so as to occupy their rightful and honourable place among nations of the world); and that the African youth should be united, consolidated, trained and disciplined, because from their ranks, future leaders would be recruited.

    University of Stirling Women in African Cinema: An aesthetic and thematic analysis of filmmaking by women in francophone West Africa and lusophone and anglophone Southern Africa Lizelle Bisschoff Supervised by Professor David Murphy Submitted for the degree of PhD in French Studies School of Languages, Cultures and Religions November 2009 ABSTRACT Women in African Cinema: An aesthetic and thematic analysis of filmmaking by women in francophone West Africa and lusophone and anglophone Southern Africa This study focuses on the role of women in African cinema – in terms of female directors working in the African film industries as well as the representation of women in African film. My research specifically focuses on francophone West African and lusophone and anglophone Southern African cinemas (in particular post-apartheid South African cinema). This research is necessary and significant because African women are underrepresented in theoretical work as well as in the practice of African cinema. The small corpus of existing theoretical and critical studies on the work of female African filmmakers clearly shows that African women succeed in producing films against tremendous odds. The emergence of female directors in Africa is an important but neglected trend which requires more dedicated research. The pioneering research of African-American film scholar Beti Ellerson is exemplary in this regard, as she has, since the early 2000s, initiated a new field of academic study entitled African Women Cinema Studies. My own research is situated within this emerging field and aims to make a contribution to it. The absence of women in public societal spheres is often regarded as an indicator of areas where societies need to change.

Botha1 University of Cape Town Abstract The revival in short filmmaking in post-apartheid cinema has thus far received little attention by academic scholars. The article is an attempt to describe, contextualise and analyse the highlights of South African short filmmaking by focusing on thematic and aesthetic developments in post-apartheid cinema. Hundreds of short fiction and nonfiction films have been made in South Africa since 1980. The themes of most of these films were initially limited to anti-apartheid texts, which were instruments in the anti-apartheid struggle. During the late 1980s and early 1990s short filmmakers have also explored themes other than apartheid, for example equal rights for gay and lesbian South Africans. Many short filmmakers have since 1994 experimented with form and aesthetics, as well as various narrative structures, including oral storytelling. Future studies of post-apartheid cinema need to take the revival of short filmmaking in South Africa into account. These main artefact for investigation is the movie Skin, by Anthony Fabian which is based on the book “When She Was White: A Family Divided By Race” by Judith Stone, which is the second artefact for investigation. The latter artefact is based on the life of Sandra Laing. Sandra Laing was born to white parents in the apartheid era, but she did not ascribe to the physical description of a person who was classified ‘white’ in accordance with legal and social framing thereof in apartheid South Africa. This posed many legal, social and political difficulties for her family. I was particularly interested in the composition of information sources and how semiotic resources are re-enacted, reused and repurposed in the movie ‘Skin.’ The study is more theoretical than applied in that it seeks to answer the question posed by Prior and Grusin (2010: 1): “How do we understand semiotics/multimodality theoretically and investigate it methodologically?” In the study I develop Prior and Grusin’s (2010) thesis by working with notion of semiotic remediation as a focus on semioticity helps me to focus on the signs across modes, media, channels and genres.

    DIGNITY, MEMORY AND THE FUTURE UNDER SIEGE: RECONCILIATION AND NATION BUILDING IN POST-APARTHEID SOUTH AFRICA (Recently published in Sam Okoth Opondo and Michael J. Shapiro (eds) The New Violent Cartography: Geo-analysis after the aesthetic turn - London: Routledge, 2012) The inauguration of a democratically elected Government of National Unity in 1994 in South Africa represents a defining moment in the history and politics of the country. It marked the break with official apartheid which was condemned as a crime against humanity by the United Nations General Assembly in 1966. The post-apartheid era, in the eyes of many, represented an opportunity for the country to pursue more life- affirming developments in all aspects of its socio-economic, political and cultural life. Commentators frequently glossed the political changes as a ‘miracle’ since the country, in the preceding two decades, faced possible ‘racial conflagration’ and it was on the ‘edge of a precipice’. Consequently, political and socio-economic terms and programmes such as ‘reconstruction and development’, ‘redress’ and ‘transformation’ became part of the political landscape and discourses articulated by the government and civil society. There seemed to be a general perception that different forms of intervention, restoration and healing were necessary in order to counter the personal and social convulsions emanating from the inequality, inequity, violence and brutality that was symptomatic of the apartheid past. Not surprisingly, one of the imperatives of the new government was to foster a sense of peace, nation-building, national unity and reconciliation out of the disparate racial and social groups that inhabit the country. This foregrounded the need to create social and political imaginaries that symbolically evoke the desired and yet elusive collective ideals and identities.
