Bao Nin, The Sorrow of War Recordar: To remember; from the Latin re-cordis, to pass back through the heart Eduardo Galeano, The Book of Embraces The time of “transition” to constitutional democracy in South Africa has been one of great hopefulness, of vertiginous possibility and expectation, of quiet sadness and reflection, of much joy and celebration, of contradictions and vexing complexity. The labour of rendering the breathtaking extent of colonial and Apartheid atrocity intelligible has but tentatively begun. Unravelling the lived inscriptions of layer upon layer of sentient injustice that have marked the everyday through the passage of the past three hundred and fifty years in these southernmost parts of the African continent, is only starting. In the global political and moral imaginary the “new” South Africa, however, has come to figure in two fairly stark ways: either as the “miracle” of reconciliation in which the moral victory of good (the struggle against Apartheid) has prevailed against evil (white supremacist rule), or as yet another instance of the failure of neoliberal macroeconomics where huge class disparities, social inequity and structural poverty increasingly paint a gritty canvas depicting the horizons of society as crisis, despair and struggle. Whilst both views hold implicit (though programmatically incompatible) assumptions about time, about history and about oppression, they are seldom interrogated 1 in the light of what remains vexing, creative, resilient, hopeful, human and, therefore, irreducible in the picture. This work is a meditation on the shaping of time and its impact on living with and understanding atrocity in South Africa in the wake of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC). It is an examination of the ways that the institutionalization of memory has managed perceptions of time and “transition”, of events and happenings, of sense and emotion, of violence and recovery, of the “past” and the “new”. Through this process a public language of “memory” has been carved into collective modes of meaning-making. It is a language that seems bereft of the hopes, dreams and possibilities for the promise of a just and redemptive future it once nurtured. In a review of poet, Rustum Kozain’s collection, This Carting Life, Jeremy Cronin captures these sentiments when he writes that “[t]he prevailing sense of loss [in the collection] is not a pining for a dreadful apartheid past but, rather, a conviction that our present reality is less than we had struggled for, less, perhaps, than we deserved.”1 As time has been made and marked the synchronous moments of human agency, resilience and creativity have been rendered into “events”, into commemorations of times passed. A tight weave of compelling and dominant regimes of meaning, sewn together by and through the “publicly” interpolated process of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of South Africa, has rendered lived time into an object and commodity called, the “past”. And it is through the experiential optic of memory that the “past” may be accessed. The signs of a more fractious unstitching of the meanings of the “past”, and therefore of lived time, have begun to show (o f which this work is but one instance). And it is this close weft of normative assumptions, meanings and perceptions that is the TRC’s legacy which the work of unstitching must tackle. For, insinuated in different ways in the global and national imaginary, the TRC has been one of the most powerful institutional processes to shape the contours of historical and national “consciousness” since South Africa’s political change to constitutional democracy. Increasingly, as truth commissions have become de rigueur state-instituted tools of transitional justice for countries that emerge from long periods of administrative oppression and atrocity (particularly in the global South), they are becoming deeply and ambivalently threaded into the

Blackbourn, 2010 Abstract This dissertation examines the use of inter-racial relationships as emblems of political reconciliation in South African fiction from and about the transition from apartheid to democracy. Positive representations of the relationships that apartheid prohibited would seem to constitute a rejection of apartheid itself, but through an analysis of novels by Lewis DeSoto, Elleke Boehmer, Zoë Wicomb, Marlene van Niekerk, Ivan Vladislavić, and J.M. Coetzee, I argue that the trope of the redemptive inter-racial relationship in fact reinscribes what Foucault would designate a biopolitical obsession with race as a foundational construct of the nation. Chapter 2 examines an attempt to write against the legacy of apartheid by repurposing the quintessentially South African genre of the plaasroman, but Lewis DeSoto‘s A Blade of Grass (2003) fails to reverse the narrative effects created by the plaasroman structure, implicated as the plaasroman is and has been in a biopolitical framework. Chapter 3 examines Elleke Boehmer‘s rewriting of South African history to insist on the genealogical ―truth‖ of the racial mixing of the country and its inhabitants, but Bloodlines (2000) yet retains the obsession with racial constructs that it seeks to dispute. Zoë Wicomb‘s Playing in the Light (2006), meanwhile, invokes genealogical ―truth‖ as a corrective to apartheid constructions of race, but ultimately disallows the possibility of genealogical and historical narratives as correctives rather than continuations of apartheid.

    Case study interview with David Paton Teaching Artist / Academic In their first year, Fine Art students at the University Senior Lecturer: Visual Art of Johannesburg (UJ, formerly the Technikon University of Johannesburg, South Africa Witwatersrand) have a project in printmaking to produce hade-made books based on the Bill of Rights. This involvement with the book has its roots in an interest in the book arts by current and former staff in the department who include, Kim Berman, Philippa Hobbs, Sr. Sheila Flynn and Willem Boshoff. Many important book artists in South Africa: Giulio Tambellini, Flip Hatting, Sonya Strafella and Carol Hofmeyr amongst others, received their introduction to the genre as students of the Department. UJ’s Graphic Design students undertake book-design in their 3rd and 4th year, but they print and bind them outside of the university. It seeks to answer the question, how has activism changed in post-apartheid Manenberg as compared to the 1980s? The study analysed the politics of resistance in Manenberg placing it within the over arching mass defiance campaign in Greater Cape Town at the time and comparing the strategies used to mobilize residents in Manenberg in the 1980s to strategies used in the period of the 2000s. The thesis also focused on several key figures in Manenberg with a view to understanding what local conditions inspired them to activism. The use of biographies brought about a synoptic view into activists lives, their living conditions, their experiences of the apartheid regime, their brutal experience of apartheid and their resistance and strength against a system that was prepared to keep people on the outside. This study found that local living conditions motivated activism and became grounds for mobilising residents to make Manenberg a site of resistance. It was easy to mobilise residents on issues around rent increases, lack of resources, infrastructure and proper housing.

Three people are returning to the small dusty town of Smitsrivier. From New York comes South African- born lawyer Sarah Barcant (Hilary Swank), from a Cape Town prison former deputy-policeman Dirk Hendricks (Jamie Bartlett) and from the parliament politician Alex Mpondo (Chiwetel Ejiofor). And they all will face their own past... Red Dust first debuted on the cinema screens at the Toronto International Film Festival in September 2004. The main theme of this festival was 'South Africa: Ten Years Later' . At the festival the new arising South African cinema was celebrated and also the tenth anniversary of the new South Africa after the end of apartheid. Ten South African made movies were shown to the audience. Three of these movies got a special screening. Thereby were Red Dust, the movie Yesterday (2004) and Hotel Rwanda (2004). Red Dust was receiving a stunning response by the audience at this festival. Was this response justified or not? Background: The Truth and Reconciliation Commission In 1995, one year after the end of the era of apartheid in South Africa, the Government of National Unity under president Nelson Mandela set up the South African Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC).

    Nuusbrief / Newsletter Augustus / August 2011 We are more than half way through 2011 and indeed Stellenbosch Arts Association has been offering a wide spectrum of activities, not only for artists but also for art lovers of all ages. Our monthly member meetings were very well attended, one of the highlights being Barry Gibb’s talk on Auguste Rodin-film snippets from Camille Claude were shown and reference was made to greats such as Michelangelo and Henry Moore. Daniel Louw presented a series of six talks on Icons: windows into eternity, during which the focus shifted from spirituality to corporality, from the sublime to the ridiculous and from life to death. We recently had the opportunity to watch the graffiti artist’s, Banksy's, first film (Exit Through the Gift Shop) billed as "the world's first street art disaster movie". The film was released in the UK on 5 March 2010 and in January 2011 it was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Documentary. Our first workshop was presented by Marieke Kruger from Paarl with the theme, female figure studies. This was followed by Lorraine Blumer’s painting course and Lenie Harley’s cement sculpturing courses. What is more, we co-sponsored a holiday art project during the June school holiday for children aged 6 to 14 years in collaboration with Sasol Art Museum. We also presented a second workshop on comic art for teenagers, presented by Vernon Fourie. This was even attended by two fathers accompanying their sons! There was a special request for a follow- up of the comic course during the September school holiday.
