One of the kids, Kristen, has nightmares about Freddy. after refusing to fall asleep, her family believes she may be suicidal and sends her to a psychiatric hospital. Once there, she meets the other Elm Street kids who share their own issues with violence, suicide, self-harm and drugs. As the film continues, it becomes clear that Freddy is targeting the kids one by one. But what makes this film stand out more than the previous installments is how Freddy preys on their physical well-being and mental health. What makes Freddy's murders so different from his past kills is the level of premeditation he puts into them. Rather than outright killing his targets without any logic, the film teases his more comedic and creative side. For example, when Freddy murders a sleepwalker named Phillip, he is being controlled like a puppet. However, when people look into his death, it just looks like a tragic accident brought on by his condition. Not only does this show how Freddy is improving his kills, but it also gives him more leeway to target the other kids by making them look like accidents or suicides. What brings A Nightmare on Elm Street 3 full circle is the reintroduction of the original film's final girl, Nancy Thompson. Now an interning therapist at the psych ward, she helps the kids identify their tormentors and fight back against Freddy. It's an unforeseen variable on Freddy's part but makes their fated reunion even more climactic. Nancy's help in fighting against Freddy also introduces another natural evolution in the series. Instead of Freddy having the most control in the dream world, Nancy shows how each child can turn their inner strength into a tangible weapon. Kincaid turns his violent tendencies into a literal strength that allows him to punch through walls and lift heavy objects. It shows that while Freddy has evolved in his creativity, his victims also changed and can now fight back. It's also a great metaphor for people suffering from addiction or depression to find their own inner strength and fight back against their own personal Freddys. A Nightmare on Elm Street 3 's climax becomes more than an ending for Freddy. While the kid's doctor and Nancy's father put Freddy's corpse to rest in the real world, Nancy and the kids fight back against him in the dream world. Sadly many lives are lost in the ordeal, including Nancy and her father's, but Freddy is ultimately defeated. While the film has an ending that is hard to follow up, the franchise found a way with multiple sequels that focused more on Freddy's funny side than the tormentor shown in the first three films. While it would be some time before Freddy became a terrifying threat again, A Nightmare on Elm Street 3 managed to stand the test of time as a fantastic entry.
