LESSON 3 – NEHEMIAH: A GODLY LEADER APRIL 19, 2020 Background Scripture: Nehemiah 1-4, 12 Lesson Passage: Nehemiah 1:1-11; 2:1-6, 17,18; 3; 4:1-4, 8, 9, 21-23; 12:27-30 (NIV) Introduction: It is no surprise that when we look at many of our national and local elections, we often find ourselves not voting for a person we want but voting for the lesser of evils. The world is in a leadership crisis, and the answer is not more training or more education. The answer is God. God is the ultimate leader and the reproducer of leaders. In fact, Scripture declares that there is no authority but that which comes from God (Romans 13:1). Leadership comes from the Lord and godly leadership is a gift from Him. And, possibly one of the greatest books in the Bible that we can learn about leadership from is the book of Nehemiah. When somebody wants to learn about worship, they go to the Psalms. When somebody wants to learn about wisdom, they go to Proverbs. But where should a person go to learn about leadership? Many would say that we should go to the book of Nehemiah. Nehemiah, the cupbearer to the king of Persia, persuaded the king to support the rebuilding of the city of Jerusalem (Nehemiah 2:5) and motivated Israel to rebuild ruins that had been abandoned for more than 140 years. He led the rebuilding project while under the constant threat of attack by Israel’s antagonistic neighbors. He completed the rebuilding of the walls around Jerusalem within only fifty-two days. -

Garland Dean, Baylor School of Social Work and Vicki Marsh Kabat Master of Social Work Student Power and the Christian © 2009 Baylor University School of Social Work Introduction to the Study: Dynamics of Power As Christians, we are richly steeped in lessons about servanthood. Stories of Jesus washing the disciples’ feet and of Jesus coming down from heaven to take on human flesh paint a beautiful picture of what it means to be a Christian. We understand that we are called to serve others. What we have less instruction in is how to live as persons with power and how that informs servanthood. How are we to wield power in appropriate, gospel‐directed ways? No problem, you say, because you don’t have any power to wield? That’s not true. Whether you are a boss, supervisor, teacher, coach, pastor, deacon, PTA president, Bible study leader, or parent, you have power. One reason we haven’t studied the dynamics of power as much is because the word itself prompts images and emotions that are often negative. People just aren’t comfortable talking about power; it’s such a loaded word. “Power” simply means having the ability to influence the behavior of another person. As children, we did school homework whether it made sense to us or not, because the teacher was the one in authority—she had the power. On the athletic team, we ran laps because a coach said to do so. When a parent sat us in the corner for punishment, we sat there. -

!1 We are going through the Old Testament book of Nehemiah this fall. Nehemiah is the man primarily responsible for refounding the nation of Israel after their exile in Babylon. The story begins in 445 BC, and there is a lot to learn about leadership and about building up the church and the people of God. In chs. 1 he hears about the devastating state of Jerusalem, and receives permission from King Artaxerxes of the Persian Empire to return to Jerusalem to rebuild the wall. In ch. 2 he surveys the scene and rallies the people together to the task. In 3-4 he assembles the people, builds the wall, and deals with some opposition. This morning we’ll be in 5-6. These chapters are all about spiritual warfare, and especially about the ways in which our enemy seeks to destroy leaders through temptation, discrediting them, distracting them, and deceiving them. Some of you are familiar with the Old Testament book of Esther, in which God is never mentioned but his fingerprints are all over the story. Similar here – Satan is never mentioned but he looms behind the scenes, and his fingerprints are all over these two chapters. Let me quickly remind you about who Satan is and what his main strategies are. Satan is a created being, a fallen angel who rebelled against God. Two important passages about him are these: John 10:10 - The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full. -

Creekside Community Church: ”Working with God: the Book of Nehemiah” “Facing External Opposition” Nehemiah 4:1-23 February 3, 2012 John Bruce, Pastor Author Irving Stone spent his life studying greatness and writing the biographies of Michelangelo, Vincent van Gogh, Sigmund Freud and Charles Darwin. Stone was once asked if he had found a thread that runs through the lives of exceptional people. He said, "I write about people who some time in their life have a vision or dream of something that should be accomplished and they go to work. They are beaten over the head, knocked down, vilified and for years they get nowhere. But every time they're knocked down they stand up. You cannot destroy these people. And at the end of their lives they've accomplished some modest part of what they set out to do." Anyone who wants to accomplish anything worthwhile will experience opposition, resistance and adversity. Discouragement and despair will be their constant companions. And the real test of any person is what it takes to stop them. That’s why far more people begin than finish. Because success in most cases is simply outlasting your critics as is illustrated in the fourth chapter of the story of Nehemiah. The story of Nehemiah is a story about how God works through people. As the story opens, the great city of Jerusalem lies in ruins, its walls destroyed 160 years earlier by the Babylonian army. The few Jews left in Jerusalem live in fear, poverty and compromise. The future of Jerusalem and the state of Israel is in jeopardy. -

He gives here a consideration of the Elizabethan separatists, in this 450th anniversary year of the detention by the sheriff’s officers of some members of the congregation meeting then at Plumbers Hall, London. In addition this issue of our CHS Magazine includes the promised piece on history and preaching to which many of our readers in this country and abroad contributed. Although this is merely a qualitative study, we hope that it may offer support to those who argue for the retention of specialist historians within ministerial training programmes. Certainly its evidence suggests that those who dismiss history as of little or no use to the preacher will lack support from many practitioners. -

The author owes much to many people who proved their interest in this attempt to see America's past a little more clearly. The Institute of Early American History and Culture gave two grants that enabled me to devote a sabbatical leave and a summer to direct searching of colony and church records. Librarians and archivists have been cooperative beyond the call of regular duty. Not a few scholars have read the study in whole or part to give me the benefit of their knowledge and judgment. THE ELIZABETHAN PROTESTANT PRESS: A STUDY OF THE PRINTING AND PUBLISHING OF PROTESTANT RELIGIOUS LITERATURE IN ENGLISH, EXCLUDING BIBLES AND LITURGIES, 1558-1603. By WILLIAN CALDERWOOD, M.A., B.D. Submitted for the Ph.D. degree, University College. (c\ (LONBI 2 ABSTRACT Uninterrupted for forty-five years, from 1558 to 1603, Protestants in England were able to use the printing press to disseminate Protestant ideology. It was a period long enough for Protestantism to root itself deeply in the life of the nation and to accumulate its own distinctive literature. English Protestantism, like an inf ant vulnerable to the whim of a parent under King Henry VIII, like a headstrong and erratic child in Edward's reign, and like a sulking, chastised youth in the Marian years, had come of age by the end of the Elizabethan period. At the outset of Elizabeth's reign the most pressing religious need was a clear, well-reasoned defence of the Church of England. The publication of Bishop Jewel's Apologia Ecclesiae Anglicanae in 1562 was a response to that need and set the tone of literary polemics for the rest of the period. It was a time of muscle- flexing for the Elizabethan Church, and especially in the opening decades, a time when anti-Catholicism was particularly vehement. Consistently throughout the period, when Queen and country were threatened by Catholic intrigues and conspiracies, literature of exceptional virulence was published against Catholicism. But just as the press became an effective tool for defenders and apologists of the Church of England, it soon was being used as an instrument to advance the cause of further reform by more radical Protestants. -

PILGRIM AND PURITAN: A DELICATE DISTINCTION by Richard Howland Maxwell Pilgrim Society Note, Series Two, March 2003 Near the end of his term as president of the United States, Ronald Reagan delivered an address in which he sought to call the American people back to the values of - in his words - "that old Pilgrim, John Winthrop." Reagan's successor in office, George Bush - who, according to some, ought to have known better because he is a descendant of Mayflower passenger John Howland - compounded the historical error in his 1992 Thanksgiving proclamation by saying, "This Thanksgiving… let us renew the solemn commitment that John Winthrop and his fellow Pilgrims made more than 100 years ago." Mr. Bush not only had the Pilgrims and Puritans confused; he missed their dates by more than two centuries! And a bit more recently, the November 1994 issue of the Daughters of the American Revolution Magazine suggested that we include in our Thanksgiving that year "the Puritans in Plymouth, Massachusetts from whom most of our traditions come." The same article later described the "first Thanksgiving" as "the 1621 feast to celebrate the first long winter the Puritans survived in the New World." These illustrations of the apparent ignorance of many Americans concerning at least some parts of our own history have produced among some of us Mayflower descendants an emotional reaction. We become highly incensed if someone refers to the Plymouth settlers as "Puritans," and we become downright angry at the thought that Winthrop might be called a "Pilgrim." The purpose of my presentation today is to examine with as little prejudice as possible the shared history, similarities, and differences between the two groups we commonly call Pilgrims and Puritans.
