East Coast of North America Strategic Assessment Project Partitioning the Total Mortality DFO r~I'j~ffm~niii~rlieqUe 10020258 of Atlantic Cod Stocks Project East Coast of North America Groundfish: Initial Explorations of Biogeography and Species Assemblages o Department of Fisheries and Oceans, Canada and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, USA SH 213.5 August 1996 .E17 1996 c.2 About the East Coast of North America Strategic Assessment Project The East Coast of North America Strategic Assessment Project (ECNASAP) was initiated in the USA by NOAA's Strategic Environmental Assessments (SEA) Division to develop information and analytical resources for sup porting integrated management of large portions of the region's coastal ocean. The ECNASAP Pilot Project consists of inshore and offshore case studies, and is a cooperative effort among several U.S. and Canadian agencies. Digital map and data products are being developed in the Offshore Case Study for groundfish, seabirds, temperature, salinity, and sediments. This report summarizes the initial results for the groundfish component. About Partitioning the Total Mortality of Atlantic Cod Stocks Project In 1995, Canada's Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) initiated a series of research projects to address high priority issues for the Atlantic and Pacific coasts. The Cod Mortality Project is a component of this effort; its objective is to assess the main causes for the decline of cod resources since the mid-1980s. A subproject is to examine long-term changes in groundfish assemblages on a biogeographic scale, and to determine whether or not these changes coincided with changes in ocean climate. -

Laguna de Tamiahua is ecologically and economically important as a nursery area that favours the recruitment of species that sustain traditional fisheries. It has been studied previously, though not throughout its whole area, and considering the variety of habitats that sustain these fisheries, as well as an increase in population growth that impacts the system. The objectives of this study were to present an updated list of fish species, data on special status, new records, commercial importance, dominance, density, ecotic position, and the spatial and temporal distribution of species in the lagoon, together with a comparison of Tamiahua with 14 other Gulf of Mexico lagoons. Materials and methods. Fish were collected in August and December 1996 with a Renfro beam net and an otter trawl from different habitats throughout the lagoon. The species were identified, classified in relation to special status, new records, commercial importance, density, dominance, ecotic position, and spatial distribution patterns. -

The three-fold increase in the total num- ber of species covered in the current compilation is the result of both a larger study area and a recent increase in published ontogenetic studies of fishes by many authors and students of the morphology of early stages of marine fishes. It is a tribute to the efforts of those authors that the ontogeny of greater than 70% of species known from the western North Atlantic Ocean is now well described. It is recognized as unavoidable in any kind of fishing but the quantity varies according to the gear operated. In tropical countries like India, bycatch issue is more complex due to the multi-species and multi-gear nature of the fisheries. Among the different fishing gears, trawling accounts for a higher rate of bycatch, due to comparatively low selectivity of the gear. A study was conducted during June 2018 - Dec 2019 in the Mudasalodai fish landing centre, southeast coast of India. During the study period six sp. of flat fishes collected and identified taxonomically. Keywords: Flat fish, tongue fish, sole fish, bycatch, fish landing, waters of Parangipettai. The study was conducted for a period of diversity, taxonomy one and half year (June 2018 - Dec 2019), no sampling was done in the month of May, due to the fishing holiday in the coast of Introduction Tamil Nadu. The collected flat fishes were kept in ice boxes and Fish forms an important source of food and is man’s important transferred to the laboratory and washed in tap water. -

The list is based on historical literature records and taxon occurrence data obtained from natural history collections, together with new revisions and occurrences. -

Various biological inferences are drawn from the small sizes typical of Philippine (and tropical) flatfish, and pertinent to the "systems dynamics of flatfish".
