The candle burns this week for Rev’d Craig Moody, who died last week, and for his family in mourning

WELCOME TO WORSHIP Welcome to worship. We hope your time here will be a blessing for you. We would like to give you information about the various ministries of the Parish: please ask one of the Welcomers or Sidespersons for a Parish Information Pack.

SUNDAYS FOLLOWING PENTECOST We are now in the part of the church’s year known as ‘Ordinary time’, that is time outside of the seasons of Advent, Christmas, Lent and Easter. The term comes from the Latin Tempus Per Annum ("time throughout the year"). ‘Ordinary’ doesn’t mean unexceptional or uninteresting, but customary, regular or orderly. Through the season we celebrate the mystery of Christ in all its aspects, and the liturgical colour of green points to our Christian hope and life.

PRAYER OF THE DAY God of the covenant, in our baptism you called us to proclaim the coming of your kingdom: give us courage, as you gave it to the apostles, that we may faithfully witness to your love and peace in every circumstance of life; in the name of Jesus Christ our Redeemer, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

FIRST READING Isaiah 66.10-14

A reading from the book of the prophet Isaiah

‘Rejoice with Jerusalem and be glad for her, all you who love her; rejoice greatly with her, all you who mourn over her. For you will feed and be satisfied at her comforting breasts; you will drink deeply and delight in her overflowing abundance.’ For this is what the Lord says: ‘I will extend peace to her like a river, and the wealth of nations like a flooding stream; you will feed and be carried on her arm and dandled on her knees. As a mother comforts her child, so will I comfort you; and you will be comforted over Jerusalem.’ When you see this, your heart will rejoice and you will flourish like grass; the hand of the Lord will be made known to his servants, but his fury will be shown to his foes.

Hear the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

PSALM 66:1-8

Response: All the earth shall worship you, O Lord.

Be joyful in God, all the earth; sing the glory of his name; sing the glory of his praise. 2

Say to God, ‘How awesome are your deeds! Because of your great strength your enemies shall bow before you. ‘All the earth shall worship you, sing to you, sing praise to your name.’ ………… Response Come now and behold the works of God, how wonderful he is in his dealings with humankind. He turned the sea into dry land; the river they passed through on foot; there we rejoiced in him. In his might he rules for ever; his eyes keep watch over the nations; let no rebel rise up against him. ………… Response Bless our God, O you peoples; make the voice of his praise to be heard, Who holds our souls in life: and suffers not our feet to slip.………... SECOND READING Galatians 6:1-18

A reading from the letter of Paul to the Galatians

Brothers and sisters, if someone is caught in a sin, you who live by the Spirit should restore that person gently. But watch yourselves, or you also may be tempted. Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfil the law of Christ. If anyone thinks they are something when they are not, they deceive themselves. Each one should test their own actions. Then they can take pride in themselves alone, without comparing themselves to someone else, for each one should carry their own load. Nevertheless, the one who receives instruction in the word should share all good things with their instructor. Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows. Whoever sows to please their flesh, from the flesh will reap destruction; whoever sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life. Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers. See what large letters I use as I write to you with my own hand! Those who want to impress people by means of the flesh are trying to compel you to be circumcised. The only reason they do this is to avoid being persecuted for the cross of Christ. Not even those who are circumcised keep the law, yet they want you to be circumcised that they may boast about your circumcision in the flesh. May I never boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, through which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world. Neither circumcision nor uncircumcision means anything; what counts is the new creation. Peace and mercy to all who follow this rule – to the Israel of God. From now on, let no one cause me trouble, for I bear on my body the marks of Jesus. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit, brothers and sisters. Amen.

Hear the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. 3

GOSPEL Luke 10.1-12, 17-24

The Lord be with you. And also with you.

The Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke, chapter 10, beginning at the 1st verse. Glory to you Lord Jesus Christ.

After this the Lord appointed seventy-two others and sent them two by two ahead of him to every town and place where he was about to go. He told them, ‘The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field. Go! I am sending you out like lambs among wolves. Do not take a purse or bag or sandals; and do not greet anyone on the road. ‘When you enter a house, first say, “Peace to this house.” If someone who promotes peace is there, your peace will rest on them; if not, it will return to you. Stay there, eating and drinking whatever they give you, for the worker deserves his wages. Do not move around from house to house. ‘When you enter a town and are welcomed, eat what is offered to you. Heal those there who are ill and tell them, “The kingdom of God has come near to you.” But when you enter a town and are not welcomed, go into its streets and say, “Even the dust of your town we wipe from our feet as a warning to you. Yet be sure of this: the kingdom of God has come near.” I tell you, it will be more bearable on that day for Sodom than for that town. The seventy-two returned with joy and said, ‘Lord, even the demons submit to us in your name.’ He replied, ‘I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven. I have given you authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and to overcome all the power of the enemy; nothing will harm you. However, do not rejoice that the spirits submit to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven.’ At that time Jesus, full of joy through the Holy Spirit, said, ‘I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to little children. Yes, Father, for this is what you were pleased to do. ‘All things have been committed to me by my Father. No one knows who the Son is except the Father, and no one knows who the Father is except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.’ Then he turned to his disciples and said privately, ‘Blessed are the eyes that see what you see. For I tell you that many prophets and kings wanted to see what you see but did not see it, and to hear what you hear but did not hear it.’

This is the Gospel of the Lord Praise to you Lord Jesus Christ.

SENTENCE OF THE DAY

Pastorally Caring in Your Community This short course, Pastorally Caring in Your Community (PCiYC), aims to build a foundation to grow churches as supportive communities that will encourage others to join. While most of us are caring and welcoming, many are unaware of actions and words that can cause others to feel excluded or not valued. The course of 4 sessions, each of 3-4 hours, builds participants’ understanding and skills gradually, providing an opportunity for them to use what they have learned in their daily interactions, whether at home, work, school, in the community, at church or at social and sports clubs: everywhere, in fact. To embed learning in the daily lives and ministries of participants, each session concludes with Skills Practice using real scenarios from various ministries and activities, such as Small Groups, Welcomers, Mainly Music, Parish Visiting, Aged Care Ministry and Hospital Visiting. Participants are encouraged to participate in a variety of these scenarios to widen their experience and understanding. This course is a good opportunity to refresh the skills and information gained at previous Pastoral Care training courses; however, it goes further and guides participants in ways of being an open generously hospitable community where members and visitors are accepted and respected and made most welcome. Because building up the body of Christ within the Anglican Church is of great importance to our Diocese, this course is provided at a minimal cost of $20 to Anglicans. The first 20 people from our parish who register will receive a subsidized place from fundraising from the recent bring-and-buy at St Andrew’s. Those who complete the course will be awarded a Certificate of Completion. The Facilitator, Ann Shepperson, is the Pastoral Care Coordinator for the Sunshine Coast University Hospital. If you would like to know more about this course, both Rosie Day and June Nicholson have completed it, so please talk to them. The course will run on Wednesdays 4, 11, 25 September and 2 October, 1.30pm-5pm (including tea break) at St Andrew’s. To register, please complete a form available at the back of church and return it to the office.

Rest in Peace ... Rev’d Craig Moody

After a long illness, Rev’d Craig Moody died on Thursday evening, 4th July. He will be laid to rest on Tuesday 9th July. The funeral service will be held at St Andrew’s Church, Kings Beach, commencing at 1pm. Sincere condolences are extended to Jenny and family.

For if we live, we live to the Lord, and if we die, we die to the Lord. So then, whether we live or whether we die, we are the Lord’s. Romans 14:8 5

Charity of the Month - Watoto Child Care Ministries

Watoto Child Care Ministries is part of Watoto Church, based in Uganda, East Africa. The church was planted in Kampala in 1988 by Gary and Marilyn Skinner, as a source of hope for a city and nation known for its violence and poverty. As a defining moment in his life, Gary recalls being taken to visit a 79-year-old widow who had mothered seven children. As they walked through the banana groves behind her small hut, she pointed out the graves of her husband and six of her children. AIDS had killed them all. Her one surviving child, a daughter, was dying of the same disease. Thus he was moved to respond to the call of James 1: 27, which says: “Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world,” and Watoto Child Care Ministries was born. It started with one house where eight orphans and a widow were given the chance to become a new family. From there has grown Watoto Villages, clusters of nine houses where a mother cares for the orphaned children. The villages incorporate outdoor spaces with sports fields and landscaped areas that allow the children to play and develop their social skills. They aim to create an eco- friendly environment for these children, raising them to become leaders who bring sustainable change to their nation and beyond. To make this possible, Watoto is implementing better ways of building sustainable and cost-effective homes and villages by harvesting rainwater and using solar energy. As a parish, we support Watoto by sponsoring a family. Parishioners commit to giving $1 or $2 a week throughout the year. If you do not already participate in this, and would like to do so, please see the list at the back of church. Other donations are also welcome (as is usual for our ‘charity of the month’) in an envelope in the collection plate. Donations to Watoto Childcare Ministries are tax deductible. If you need a receipt, please include a note with your donation asking for one. We receive regular updates and letters from our sponsored family: please speak to Carol Curran if you would like to help write to them. For more information about Watoto see https://www.watoto.com

Thanksgiving for Mother’s Union in Glasshouse Country

Thought for the day

Last Wednesday, on St Thomas’ Day, Jeremy baptised Anongrak, and confirmed Neale, Anongrak, Bella, Jessica and Harry. At the end of the service, he challenged us all, not just those who were confirmed, with these words from the liturgy: All who have been baptised and confirmed are called to study the Bible, to take part in the life of the Church, to share in the Holy Communion, and to pray faithfully and regularly. We are called to share with others, by word and example, the love of Christ and his gospel of reconciliation and hope. We are called to love our neighbours as ourselves, to honour all people and to pray and work for peace and justice. As you read through the rest of this Pew Bulletin, you will find opportunities to do just that, in our parish and beyond. The bible study groups on Revelation start soon, and other study groups operate in the parish; Warden Judy highlights just one of many ways in which you can participate in the life of our community; the ‘pastorally caring in our community’ course will help us share the love of Christ as we serve our neighbours; and there is much food for prayer throughout. The bishop concluded with these words: ‘I invite all of you to commit yourselves anew to this calling’, to which we replied: ‘We will gladly do so, in the strength of the Holy Spirit.’ Rev’d Timothy

Parish Mission Statement The Parish Council is looking forward and thinking about the mission of our parish, following on from the ‘Leading your church into growth’ sessions we ran last year. To focus our thoughts we are looking at developing our ‘Parish Mission Statement’, a succinct statement of the overall direction and purpose for the parish. For such a statement to be owned by the parish, all should have an opportunity to be involved. Therefore next Sunday (14th July) there will be an opportunity to either write a mission statement, or to jot down some ideas that you feel are important. Characteristics of a statement are that it should: • inspire as well as inform • be local and homegrown • be spiritual
