GETTING TO ST PETER’S CATHEDRAL

For most members the first General Synod event will happen at St Peter's Cathedral. The Cathedral is located at 27 King William Road, North Adelaide, on the corner of King William Road and Pennington Terrace.

By car: While there may be limited parking at the Cathedral car park and the Church Office car park across the Road on Saturday 28 June for the meeting of the Primate Election Board, no car parking will be available at the Cathedral on Sunday 29 June during the afternoon and evening.

AN IMPORTANT WARNING

There will be a major AFL football match between the Adelaide Crows and Port Power commencing at the Adelaide Oval at 3:40 PM on Sunday. It is expected to attract a crowd of over 50,000 and to finish while the Synod Service is in progress. Previous versions of the General Synod Timetable showed the Opening Service commencing at 6:00 PM. Because of unforeseen road closures mentioned below, the Service will now commence at 5.30 PM, with consequential adjustments to the times of other events during the afternoon.

6-005 BOOK 6: INFORMATION FOR MEMBERS THE FIRST DAY

The timing of the football match has a number of significant consequences:

 From 2:40pm to approximately 6:40 PM there will be a two-hour parking limit on all streets in the vicinity of the Cathedral. For further details of parking restrictions visit http://smartmoveadelaide.com.au/assets/sma/Adelaide_Oval_Event_Parking_Plan_ 2.pdf.  King William Road and Pennington Terrace will be closed to private vehicles from approximately 5:40 PM to 7:40 PM.  As a result, vehicle access to St Peter's Cathedral during this time will not be possible. However, it will be possible prior to the commencement of the Service.  During the period of street closure, vehicle access to streets surrounding the Cathedral will only be available from North Adelaide. This means that any approach to the Cathedral from the CBD will require substantial deviation from the most obvious access routes. For further details of access routes visit: http://smartmoveadelaide.com.au/assets/sma/Oval_Road_Closures_and_Detours_6 -May-14_1.pdf.  Metrobus Stop Y2 in King William Street (see below) will close from approximately 4:40 PM to approximately 7:00 PM.

Pedestrian access: Weather permitting, St Peter's Cathedral is a pleasant 10 – 15 minute walk from most CBD hotels and apartments. There are two principal ways of getting there:  You can walk down King William Road from the CBD to the Cathedral; or  From North Terrace and Hindley Street hotels you can enter the Adelaide Railway Station concourse from North Terrace, exit the concourse at the northern end, cross Festival Drive, follow the clearly marked route between the Festival Theatre and the Dunstan Playhouse to cross the River Torrens on the new footbridge which leads to the southern side of the Adelaide Oval stadium, and then proceed around the eastern side of the Oval across Pennington Gardens to the Cathedral.

Public transport: Subject to the restrictions mentioned below, you can take a Metrobus from Stop X1 or Stop X2 in King William Street on the Western side between Currie Street and Hindley Street, and alight at Stop 2 just by the Cathedral.

This is a request stop. Catch buses showing any of the following routes:

From Stop X1 – Route 222, 224, 225, 228, 229, G10 or G10B; From Stop X2 – Route 230, 232, 251, 252, 253 or 254.

Stop X2 is north of Stop X1, but at the time of writing, Stop X2 is closed owing to building works on the corner of Hindley Street and King William Street. While that continues, the above buses normally departing from Stop X2 will depart from Stop Y2 between Hindley Street and North Terrace, but only until approximately 4:40 PM on Sunday due to the football match mentioned above. Between about 4:40 PM and about 7:00 PM on that day these buses will only depart from Stop V2 between

6-006 BOOK 6: INFORMATION FOR MEMBERS THE FIRST DAY

Franklin Street and Waymouth Street. All these stops are on the Western side of King William Street.

Public Transport Tickets: The cost of a 2-section Metroticket for this journey is $3 on Saturday and $2.20 on Sunday. Tickets can be purchased on the bus, but must be validated on entry. If you hold a Seniors Card issued by your State or Territory Government, you can present this on arrival at Adelaide Airport Information Booth, WH Smith Express at the ground floor arrivals area or at an Adelaide Metro Information Centre (there is one on the corner of Currie Street and King William Street, Adelaide) and you will be issued with a temporary 14 day Metroticket which will entitle you to free public transport on Saturday and Sunday and on Monday to Friday other than between 7:01 AM and 9:00 AM and between 3:01 PM and 7:00 PM. While useful on the weekend, this will not assist you to get to the Synod meetings on time at St Peter's College.

PROGRAM

PROGRAM OVERVIEW

The General Synod 2014 program is at page 6-101 and available online at: http://www.anglican.org.au/content/general_synods/General_Synod_2014/Program.aspx .

SMALL GROUPS DISCUSSION PROGRAM

In November 2012 Standing Committee agreed that 4 periods of small groups discussion would be allocated in the General Synod 2014 timetable. At that stage, this was a commitment to a type of process only, as no conversation topic had been mooted.

What is the Small Groups Discussion Program?

The aim of the Small Groups Discussion Program at General Synod 2014 is to deepen discipleship to Christ through a sustained conversation over days, face to face, prayerfully searching together for where God is leading the Church. The small group conversation seeks to accomplish this by encouraging genuine conversation across difference; deepening relationships across the Church; and energising for mission by setting a platform for the life and mission of the Church over the next decade. The conversation invites everyone to make their contribution; all voices are equally valued.

This Program draws on the experience of group facilitation which is being used in different parts of the . Like these experiences, this Program seeks to create the space in which we can listen to God and listen to each other in alternative and more effective ways than allowed by the parliamentary procedure used at the General Synod. Small groups have been used successfully and widely in parishes across the worldwide church in recent decades to deepen relationships and create an improved sense of community.

The Small Groups Discussion Program will:

(a) enable the views of more members of the General Synod to be heard in an atmosphere of safety and trust (encourage genuine conversation across difference);

(b) help us to understand each other better through exploring the areas of agreement and difference (deepen relationships across the Church);

(c) help to develop initiatives for the life and mission of the Church over the next decade (energise the Church for mission).

Each small group will be led by a facilitator who is also a member of General Synod. The membership of the groups is being determined by the General Secretary. Members will be notified at General Synod.

6-014 BOOK 6: INFORMATION FOR MEMBERS PROGRAM

What is the discussion topic and why was it chosen?

Standing Committee has specified an hour and a half each day, Monday – Thursday from 11:00 AM to 12:30 PM, for the Small Groups Discussion Program. This will comprise half an hour of bible study and prayer and one hour of topic discussion. There will also be a plenary reporting period of half an hour on Thursday afternoon.

The next task which Standing Committee undertook was to decide upon what topic or topics needed to be discussed in small group mode. The Viability and Structures Task Force, instituted by General Synod Standing Committee in November 2010, requested that its report into the viability and structures of the Anglican Church in Australia be included in the Small Groups Discussion Program at the sixteenth session of General Synod.

The General Synod Standing Committee concurred and has subsequently decided that 2 reports and a reflection (see below) on this topic be discussed in the 4 available small group sessions. You will see these documents in your Synod papers.

Topic of the Small Groups Discussions : The reports of the Viability and Structures Task Force and the Diocesan Financial Advisory Group; and the theological reflection from the Rt Rev’d Dr Stephen Pickard.

In addition, the following report will be available to small group members to assist their discussions:  The General Secretary’s paper on the implementation of the recommendations of the Task Force and DFAG.

Structure of the topic discussion

In order to consider the reports, small group members are asked to discuss each of the following 4 sub-topics on the allocated day, specifically in the light of, and with reference to, these documents.

Group members are requested to read and be familiar with them.

Topic day 1 VISION

What are your highest hopes for the ministry and mission of the Anglican Church of Australia for our nation?

Topic day 2 CONCERNS

Reflecting on your own experience and the reports provided, what concerns you about the current state of ministry and mission in our Church?

Topic day 3 CAUSES

What are the causes of the concerns identified by your group yesterday? Why is it difficult for us to deal with them?

Topic day 4 ACTION

What are the practical steps (both short-term and long-term) that we should take to work towards achieving the highest hopes you identified on Monday?

6-015 BOOK 6: INFORMATION FOR MEMBERS PROGRAM

Your group’s report of your discussions on day 4 will begin with the following statement.

“This General Synod small group (name) recommends …x.. action be undertaken at national/diocesan level from now on to address ..y..

The means of achieving this would be ..z..”

ST PETER’S COLLEGE

St Peter's College is an Anglican boys' school situated in Adelaide, South Australia founded in 1847. Whilst much has changed during the 166 years that Saints has been educating boys, as the founders recognised, Saints has long understood that building character is as important as fostering intellect. Accordingly, St Peter's College remains uncompromising in the commitment to be at the forefront of boys' education, aspiring to be a truly world class school where each boy flourishes.

Today the most important work is the shaping of the character of the boys and young men at Saints – developing a sense of service, courage, commitment, integrity, morality and honour. In today's world where so much has changed, the values that Saints considers important in the education of the boys and young men have not changed too much at all.

SCHOOL CREST AND MOTTO

In 1890 the School Motto Pro Deo et Patria (For God and Country) was adopted as an ideal for the boys to live up to. Since foundation, Saints has always emphasised a sense of service honoured through selflessness. A value that remains strong and constant in the fabric of School life.

CHAPEL OF ST PETER’S COLLEGE

The daily Eucharist will be conducted in the Chapel of St Peter’s College.

MEMORIAL HALL

The business sessions of the Synod will be conducted in the Memorial Hall of St Peter’s College.

ST PETER’S CATHEDRAL

The opening service for the Sixteenth Session of the General Synod will be a Eucharist celebrated at St Peter’s Cathedral at 6:00 PM on Sunday 29 June 2014.

The See of Adelaide was constituted in June 1847. As there was no cathedral, Trinity Church on North Terrace was denoted as the pro tempore Cathedral Church. , first Bishop of Adelaide, held the first ordinations there on 's Feast day (29 June) in 1848. When Adelaide was surveyed, by Colonel William Light over a decade before, land in Square had been set aside for public use. Bishop Short obtained a land grant in the square from Governor Robe in March 1848; the grant was registered on 23 April 1851.

By late 1849 a subscription was bringing in funds for construction of a cathedral on the now cleared site. Around this time the legality of the land grant began to be publicly questioned. It was argued that the area was a public reserve and the governor had no power to issue such grants. To resolve matters Bishop Short, supported by the Synod, took the matter to the Supreme Court. The judgment in June 1855 confirmed that the grant was invalid and construction could not proceed.

Bishop Short purchased just over an acre of land, at the corner of King William Road and Pennington Terrace North Adelaide, on 8 August 1862. He reported in 1868 that the funds gathered were sufficient and announced to the Diocese's Synod his decision to begin construction of a cathedral. Building began in 1869 and it was consecrated as St Peter's Cathedral on 1 January 1878.

The Cathedral building is a landmark in the City of Adelaide, an important part of the city’s heritage. However, the Cathedral is much more than a beautiful historic building. It is also the mother church of the Anglican Diocese of Adelaide and home to a dynamic and inclusive sacramental community, which cherishes excellent liturgy, music and preaching

The Cathedral community values diversity and intellectual freedom. It includes people who travel from all over Adelaide to share in Cathedral life. We are all ages, from babies to octogenarians, and from many different backgrounds. We seek to grow in faith, to reflect God’s beauty and in our life together and to serve the wider community. As you will see from the website, all sorts of activities take place in Cathedral life. Visit: http://www.stpeters- cathedral.org.au/

Leanne SLADE Sydney Laity

Profession: Women's Pastor/Solicitor Areas of Specific Expertise: Legal

I became a Christian about 12 years ago after grieving the death of a family member and trying to wrestle with God’s word and issues relating to suffering and the sovereignty and goodness of God. I finished a combined undergraduate Arts/Law degree at the conclusion of 2003 and then worked as a solicitor for three and a half years in the area of Family Law. For two of these years, I did Legal Aid work and was grieved by the brokenness of our world as I dealt with issues of Divorce, children’s issues following separation and hearing many allegations of abuse of varying forms. At this time, I was convicted that what these clients really needed was the gospel in the midst of the sadness of their broken lives. In an attempt to grow in my knowledge of God’s word and be better equipped to serve him, his people and those that do not yet know him, I decided to undertake a ministry apprenticeship at St Thomas’, North Sydney for two years and then pursue a Bachelor of Theology at Moore College, finishing at the end of 2012. I was trained under Simon Flinders’ leadership throughout MTS and as a student minister at both St Thomas’, North Sydney, and a church plant at St Mark’s, Northbridge. Since finishing my Bachelor of Theology, I have been working part-time as the women’s pastor at All Saints Anglican Church, Petersham (three days a week in 2013 and four days a week this year). I am currently leading three bible study groups a week, meeting up one to one with various women to read the Bible and pray with them, oversee a women’s committee and run various women’s events throughout the year. The highlight of my ministry is seeing God powerfully at work by His Spirit, growing people and changing people as we open up His word together and have had the privilege of seeing people come to faith in the Lord Jesus by God’s grace. Since June 2013, I have been working for the Professional Standards
