Spanish Heraldic Historiography in the 20Th Century А.П. Spanish heraldic historiography in the 20th century Аннотация: В XX в. Валеро де Бернабе (E. Pardo de Guevara y Valdés, A. de Ceballos-Escalera y Gila, L. Valero de Bernabé y M. de Eugenio.) Abstract: In the 20th century a historical approach to the problem of herald- ry first appeared in the Spanish heraldic historiography. ИСПАНСКОЕ ГЕРБОВЕДЕНИЕ … 25 Martín de Riquer, a prominent Spanish scientist, serve as a model for the study of this phenomenon. Another patriarch of Spanish heraldry F. Menendez Pidal de Navascué is of the opinion that «the timeless and extra-regional heraldry of numerous old textbooks is pure utopia, re- mote from reality». The next generation of living researchers represent- ed by E. Pardo de Guevara y Valdés, A. de Ceballos-Escalera y Gila, and L. Valero de Bernabé y M. de Eugenio also follows a historical ap- proach to the problem. Most of those who determine the level and quality of coat of arms contemporary research in Spain represent the Humanities. The positive attitude of society towards the heraldry – is a logical outcome of successful development of Spanish study of coat of arms in the 20th century.

Don Diego de Vargas: Portrait of a Seventeenth-Century Conquistador J. MANUEL ESPINOSA and W. CHARLES BENNETI, JR. Three individuals may be considered today as a great triumvirate in southwestern colonial history: don Francisco' Vazquez de Coronado (1510-1554); don Juan de Onate (1549-1626); and don Diego deVargas Zapata Lujan Ponce de Leon (1643-1704). Coronado led a large expe dition that traversed much of the American Southwest in 1540-1542, exploring as far east as Kansas, in search of cities of wealth and exotic peoples. Although he found no riches, the expedition helped give the Spaniards a fairly accurate concept of the area that would become the American Southwest. Onate is known as the colonizer of New Mexico after he established the first Spanish colony in the Southwest in 1598 near the Pueblo Indian village of San Juan on the Rio del Norte or Rio Grande.

ACCEPTANCES Page 1 of 17 August 2005 LoAR THE FOLLOWING ITEMS HAVE BEEN REGISTERED: AN TIR Aine Paixdecoeur. Reblazon of device. Or, a natural whale naiant to sinister base sable between two bendlets wavy all between two roses vert seeded Or. The whale was originally blazoned a sperm whale. The submitter contacted the College of Arms and indicated that the blazon was not acceptable; it was reblazoned simply as a whale on the Errata letter of 02/2005. We would have changed it back to a sperm whale, but for the submitter's preference. However, a whale with no other modifiers indicates a heraldic monster, which this is not. Therefore we have reblazoned it as a natural whale. Armatus Kamateros. Name and badge. Azure, a cross potent argent between six mullets of eight points in annulo Or. The submitter requested an authentic 10th C Byzantine name, but accepted no changes. Although the name Armatus is found in a list of Byzantine names, the source for that list tends to normalize and Latinize the names. AHM Jones, The Prosopography of the Later Roman Empire, A.D. 527-641 vol III, shows an example from a Greek inscription from 575/576 from Thrace; the spelling in the transcription would usually be transcribed as Armatos. If the submitter is interested in an fully Greek name, we suggest this spelling. Please advise the submitter to draw the cross larger, as befits a primary charge. Ása Starradóttir. Device. Argent, a reindeer salient contourny sable and on a chief gules three coronets argent. The submitter is a duchess and thus entitled to display the coronets.

Journal of Alternative Perspectives in the Social Sciences (2020) Volume 10 No 4, 743-762 Electronic badges, Heraldry, E-Certificates and the Balkanization of Credentials Otto F. von Feigenblatt, Ed.D., Ph.D. Academician, Real Academia de Doctores de España Abstract: The expansion of alternative credentials which started in the information technology sector and is currently expanding to other fields, has resulted in a wide array of symbols to represent the achievement of skills or the completion of a certain length of training. With the cost of formal post-secondary education increasing and the global economy slowing down due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, a wide array of alternative credentials have been created to fill the gap. Altenative credentials range from electronic badges to extremely short free online courses with completion certificates. The present paper compares and contrasts alternative credentials with traditional ones. It also explores the similarities between e-badges and heraldry. Keywords: credentials, heraldry, authority, legitimacy 1. Introduction A highly competitive job market and an increasingly complex society has resulted in a proliferation of alternative credentials. There are many reasons for seeking credentials, yet the most prevalent one is increasing one’s competitiveness in the job market (Guinier, Fine, Balin, Bartow, & Stachel, 1994; Mangu-Ward, 2008; Scholz, 2013). Traditional credentials include professional licenses, academic degrees, and standardized exams. Nevertheless the increased cost of post secondary education and the transition of developed countries to knowledge societies have resulted in a vast array of intermediate credentials mostly focused on soft skills (Scholz, 2013). 743 Electronic badges, Heraldry, E-Certificates and the Balkanization of Credentials Alternative credentials have existed for a long time in vocational fields but their spread to the white collar world is relatively new (Hanson, 2013).

Sirach 24:12 The year 2009 marked the beginning of the third decade of existence of the Canadian Heraldic Authority.2 There is an old German proverb that Alle Anfangen sind schwer — all beginnings are difficult — and doubtless it was so with the Canadian Heraldic Authority, although to the external observer things seemed to have moved smoothly from the very start. This no doubt was in part due to its well thought-out form and location in the Honours Chancellery of the Governor General’s office, to the encouragement and help it received from the several Governors General and members of the government of the day, to the quality of the staff who from the start formed the Authority, and to the consistent support from the Canadian Heraldry Society and many sections of the Canadian public.3 At the same time, the success of this North American heraldic authority raises the question of whether a similar heraldic authority might not be created in her North American neighbour immediately to the south. In what follows, Section 1 briefly describes the heraldic past of the United States. The first subsection of that section is a rapid history of armigery in the lands now included in that country, and its second subsection recalls the use of heralds or pro-heralds in the same lands.

  • Gibraltar: the Rock with Its Own Symbols
Gibraltar: The Rock with its own Symbols Roman Klimeš Abstract Gibraltar, a British Overseas Territory, is presented by means of geographic data and an historic overview. The history of the symbols of this territory began in 1502 when Spanish monarchs King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella granted the coat of arms of Gibraltar. Further development of the coat of arms is then described until the present day. The first flag used in Gibraltar, in 1870, was the colonial flag of the Government. Other flags from later periods are described down to the present. Other symbols used in Gibraltar, such as police emblem and flags of the Royal Gibraltar Yacht Club, are also described. There is also further demonstration of the use of various symbols in practice, such as on coins, banknotes, and stamps, and in houses, gardens, and public places.
