    The Floating Palace In the thirteenth James Bond spy thriller in 1983, Roger Moore comes up against “Octopussy”, an exotic jewel smuggler who lives a life of opulence aboard her “floating palace” near Delhi, India. She owns a traveling circus used as a cover for her jewelry smuggling operation (with Afghan prince and partner Kamal Khan). The “floating palace” is guarded by a team of female gymnasts, all part of her Octopus cult. But floating palaces with traveling circuses are nothing new to the Crescent City. They’ve made visits many times before. The opulent “floating palace”, where “Octopussy” scenes were filmed The first “floating theatre” was constructed in Pittsburgh in 1831 as a vehicle for the Chapmans, a family of English actors. Only a narrow box 16 by 100 feet long on a narrow barge, but it was a real theatre nonetheless. With a stage at one end, a pit in the middle, and a gallery at the other end, the nine-person Chapman family floated it down the Ohio and Mississippi rivers (with performances along the way) to its journey’s end in New Orleans. There it was sold for firewood, and the troupe trekked back to Pittsburgh to build another craft for the following season. By 1836 they were able to afford a steamboat to use as their own permanent “floating theatre”. The Chapman presentations included Shakespeare's “The Taming of the Shrew” and “Hamlet”, August von Kotzebue's “The Stranger” and the fairy tale “Cinderella”. Reese Spring 2021 WMNST 492W: Senior Capstone Seminar Dr. Jill Wood Reese 2 INTRODUCTION The popularized phrase “celebrity trainwreck” has taken off in the last ten years, and the phrase actively evokes specified images (Doyle, 2017). These images usually depict young women hounded by paparazzi cameras that are most likely drunk or high and half naked after a wild night of partying (Doyle, 2017). These girls then become the emblem of celebrity, bad girl femininity (Doyle, 2017; Kiefer, 2016). The trainwreck is always a woman and is usually subject to extra attention in the limelight (Doyle, 2017). Trainwrecks are in demand; almost everything they do becomes front page news, especially if their actions are seen as scandalous, defamatory, or insane. The exponential growth of the internet in the early 2000s created new avenues of interest in celebrity life, including that of social media, gossip blogs, online tabloids, and collections of paparazzi snapshots (Hamad & Taylor, 2015; Mercer, 2013). What resulted was 24/7 media access into the trainwreck’s life and their long line of outrageous, commiserable actions (Doyle, 2017). Kristy Fairclough coined the term trainwreck in 2008 as a way to describe young, wild female celebrities who exemplify the ‘good girl gone bad’ image (Fairclough, 2008; Goodin-Smith, 2014). While the coining of the term is rather recent, the trainwreck image itself is not; in their book titled Trainwreck, Jude Ellison Doyle postulates that the trainwreck classification dates back to feminism’s first wave with Mary Wollstonecraft (Anand, 2018; Doyle, 2017).

According to E-Poll likability data we factored into Vulture's Most Valuable Stars list, the braying hordes of Hathaway haters are merely a very vocal minority. The numbers say that most people actually like her. Even more shocking? Who they like her more than. In calculating their E-Score Celebrity rankings, E-Poll asked people how much they like a particular celebrity on a six-point scale, which ranged from "like a lot" to "dislike a lot." The resulting Likability percentage is the number of respondents who indicated they either "like" Anne Hathaway or "like Anne Hathaway a lot." Hathaway's 2014 Likability percentage was 67 percent — up from 66 percent in 2013 — which doesn't quite make her Will Smith (85 percent), Sandra Bullock (83 percent), Jennifer Lawrence (76 percent), or even Liam Neeson (79 percent), but it does put her well above plenty of stars whose appeal has never been so furiously impugned on Twitter. Why? Well, why not? Anne Hathaway is a talented actress and seemingly a nice person. The objections to her boiled down to two main points: She tries too hard, and she's overexposed. But she's been absent from the screen since 2012'sLes Misérables, so it's hard to call her overexposed now. And trying too hard isn't the worst thing in the world, especially when you consider the alternative.

    Issue #154 Editor: Lynette Loveland Research by History Research Committee April - June 2019 The Great Race - Riverside Saturday June 22nd was a beautiful day in downtown Riverside for the start of the Hemmings Motor News Great Race. The race is a time speed endurance rally for vintage cars (before 1974 model year). The course started at the Mission Inn Hotel and Spa with much fanfare from the City of Riverside Chamber of Commerce. Ford Model A’s lined the parking lot across from the Municipal Auditorium. The Model A’s were provided by the local chapter of MAFCA. Contestants came from as far away as New York. Racers proceeded to the Route 66 Museum in Victorville, California where a luncheon was served, before finishing the day in Lancaster, California. The first leg was won by 2-time Grand Champion team of Howard (father, driver) and Doug (son, navigator) Sharp. This team eventually won the overall event. The Race concluded on Sunday June 30th in Tacoma, Washington after passing through 4 states (California, Nevada, Oregon, and Washington) and traveling over 2,300 miles. This is the first time the rally has started in Riverside but not the first time through Riverside. In 1983 the race started at Knott’s Berry Farm in Buena Park, California on its way to Indianapolis Motor Speedway in Indiana. This year was another first for the rally – the first time the race was entirely on the West Coast. The Hemmings Motor News Great Race was inspired from the 1965 movie “The Great Race” starring Jack Lemmon, Tony Curtis, Natalie Wood and Peter Falk.
