Barbara Pym, Useless Longings, and Some Tame Gazelle
Love In Her Own Peculiar Way: Barbara Pym, Useless Longings, and Some Tame Gazelle Michelle Huneven Paper presented at the 18th North American Conference of the Barbara Pym Society Cambridge, Massachusetts, 12-13 March 2016 Like Henry James, Barbara Pym’s great subject is the impossibility of love. While James wrote of an inability to love, Pym wrote of love that is not returned. Unrequited love. Useless longings. Herself an ambivalent adept of one-sided passion—she did appreciate a good, gut-twisting love pang— Pym wrote of women who love married men (Some Tame Gazelle and Jane and Prudence ), women who form intense attachments to gay men (A Glass of Blessings, The Sweet Dove Died), and women who stalk their love objects (No Fond Return of Love). Pym was 22 when, to amuse her friends at Oxford—and also to get a handle on a distressing love affair— she wrote a short story about all of them called Some Tame Gazelle. Her friends were amused, and Pym determined to expand it into a novel. Not as easy as she’d thought! It would take her fifteen years to hammer that painful romantic episode into her pitch-perfect comic masterpiece. 1. Barbara Barbara Pym as a college student was tall, attractive, well-dressed, shy, funny as hell, and very smart. Men liked her, and she was keenly interested in return. Perhaps a little too interested; her Oxford diary pays more attention to boys than to books. As she was shy, quiet, and facing her first only nominally-chaperoned co- educational environment, Pym invented a persona to face the opposite sex: the dashing and adventurous Sandra. -

We will trace key figures and issues that move the church in England through the Middle Ages and that lead to its break with Rome in the 16th century. We will read occasional primary documents and poetry to taste the flavour of the time. We will study the catechism published by Bishop Alexander Nowell in 1572 in order to understand Anglican teaching on the Law, the Creed, the Lord’s Prayer and the Sacraments. SECOND S UNDAY OF LENT MARCH 12, 2017 JMJ Dear Parishioners, This second week of Lent we will again look at why we are praying the Mass the way we are here at Saint Mary’s. Mass celebrated ver- sus populum has the danger of putting the gathered community and the priest himself, instead of the Eucharist, as the center of worship. At its worst, a cult of personality can be built up around whichever priest “presider” is funniest and most effusive. Like a comedian playing to an audience, the laughter of the congregation at his quirks and eccentricities can even build up a certain clerical narcissism within himself. The celebration of Mass versus populum places the priest front and center, with all of his eccentricities on display. Even priests such as myself who make every effort to celebrate Mass versus populum with a staidness and sobriety easily succumb to its inherent deficiencies. In fact, celebrating the Mass versus populum is just as distracting to the congregation as it is to the priest. While celebrating Mass ad orientem does not immediately cure every moment of distraction, it provides a concrete step in reorienting the focus of the Mass. It allows for a certain amount of anonymity for the priest, restoring the importance of what he does rather than who he is. By returning the focus to the Eucharist, ad orientem worship also restores a sense of the sacred to the Mass. Recalling Aristotle’s definition of a slave as a “living tool,” Msgr. Ronald Knox encouraged this imagery when thinking of the priest: “[T]hat is what the priest is, a living tool of Jesus Christ. -
The Metaphysical Poet: John Donne and His Religious Experience in Poetry

MUNA SHRESTHA Assistant Professor of Tribhuvan University, Nepal Mahendra Multiple Campus, Nepalgun, Nepal E-Mail:[email protected] ABSTRACT This paper tries to interpret John Donne’s as a religious poet. His works are better understood through the optic of Biblical knowledge, the backdrop of God’s revelation of Himself. A poet’s heart is filled with sympathy by the Spirit of his Maker and mind is illumined by His Word recognizes a much deeper sense of inspiring reality. In his poems, Donne uses the most effective and intimate of words to express his relation with God. The metaphysical poetry not only explains the existence of earthly things, but also reveals the religious significance of unnoticed or hitherto unappreciated aspects of temporal things. He also portrays satire in his poetry that deal the problem of true religion and it is a matter of great importance to Donne. He argues that it is better to examine carefully one's religious beliefs than blindly to follow any established tradition. Key words: John Donne, metaphysical poetry, religious, God. 1. INTRODUCTION English metaphysical poetry is the richest and most widely ranging in the language. Its style was most enthusiastic in the seventeenth century and it not only brought the best devotional poetry but also the finest lyrics, satires, pastorals and visionary meditations of that era (Edwin Honig). The poets gave the signal to the readers to enter into a new empire of poetry with a sense of attachment and belonging between different objects of nature and human sentiments, feeling and passion. -

Donne's "La Corona" and Christ's Mediatorial Office R. R. DUBINSKI Ijy pointing out the affinities between "La Corona" and certain traditional meditative practives, studies by Louis Martz and Helen Gardner have provided important contexts for understanding the poem's structure and organization. Martz contends that the poem "is a complex synthesis of methods and materials from both rehgious and profane poetry, from the Uturgy of the Church, and from all the various ways of meditating on the life of Christ," but the fundamental impulse and outline of the sequence, he emphasizes, is found in the Catholic meditations of the corona.^ Martz draws analogies between "La Corona" and Jesuit treatises (in particular one by Sabin Chambers) to show how the meditations of the corona may have exerted a very strong influence on the construction, divisions, and general procedure of Donne's sequence.^ Helen Gardner argues that the sonnets are in- spired by liturgical prayer and praise, especially the meditation on the Fifteen Mysteries of the Rosary adapted by Donne to a meditation on the life of Christ.^ Both Martz and Gardner make it clear that "La Corona" has a strong affinity with the long-standing practice of organized meditations on the life of Christ. Both also notice how Donne's poem is characterized by a mixture of Catholic and Protestant emphases. Gardner points out one Cathohc emphasis: "It is doubtful whether Donne felt there was any- thing particularly Cathohc in concentrating on the Mysteries of Faith, or in addressing his second and third sonnets to the Blessed Virgin, or in apostrophizing St. -

He is considered the pre-eminent representative of the metaphysical poets. His works are noted for their strong, sensual style and include sonnets, love poetry, religious poems, Latin translations, epigrams, elegies, songs, satires and sermons. His poetry is noted for its vibrancy of language and inventiveness of metaphor, especially compared to that of his contemporaries. Donne's style is characterised by abrupt openings and various paradoxes, ironies and dislocations. These features, along with his frequent dramatic or everyday speech rhythms, his tense syntax and his tough eloquence, were both a reaction against the smoothness of conventional Elizabethan poetry and an adaptation into English of European baroque and mannerist techniques. His early career was marked by poetry that bore immense knowledge of British society and he met that knowledge with sharp criticism. Another important theme in Donne’s poetry is the idea of true religion, something that he spent much time considering and theorising about. He wrote secular poems as well as erotic and love poems. He is particularly famous for his mastery of metaphysical conceits.[2] Despite his great education and poetic talents, Donne lived in poverty for several years, relying heavily on wealthy friends. -

Box 652, Cape Town 8000 Republic of South Africa [email protected] From 1950, until her death in 1980, Barbara Pym published ten novels. However, the social and literary climate of the 'sixties and early 'seventies was not receptive to her subtle and ironic literary style, and her writing suffered an eclipse of 16 years. A renaissance in her fortunes came in January 1977, when the Times literary supplement asked a selection of critics to comment on which writers they considered the most underrated of the twentieth century; both Philip Larkin and Lord David Cecil selected Barbara Pym. This critical acclaim stimulated renewed interest in her work, and Quartet in ali/limn was nominated and shortlisted for the Booker Prize in 1977. Her new status led to her canonization in the literary world, and several previously unpublished novels, as well as her edited diaries and notebooks, appeared after her death in 1980. An analysis of character in the novels reveals that Pym's peripheral characters include a large cast of academics; in addition, some of her most malicious creations are librarians, who, with their petty concerns, are averse to both books and borrowers. This article highlights her countless subtle jibes at academe; while her characters are frequently intrinsic to theme and plot (the adjective 'peripheral' is therefore to be used with caution), her most caustic scenes deflate academic ambition and pretension. -

Walk-ons and Noises Off: Peripheral Characters in Barbara Pym’s World Sandra Goldstein Paper presented at the 15th North American Conference of the Barbara Pym Society Cambridge, Massachusetts, 16-17 March 2013 “Saw today a woman with bright purple hair, her expression under it all understandably surprised; two well-dressed upper-class women, chinless….” Barbara Pym jotted down these observations in her notebook on August 20, 1955. In A Glass of Blessings, published three years later, Wilmet Forsyth, the novel’s heroine, at a social evening in the parish hall notices “two well-dressed middle-aged women with a young girl...All three were chinless, with large aristocratic noses. Near them stood a thin woman with purple hair and a surprised expression, as if she had not expected that it would turn out to be quite that colour.” The chinless ladies are later identified, but the lady with purple hair remains nameless, never to be seen again, and yet she is a great comic creation, especially since Barbara now offers a reason for her surprised expression. The four women who make up this little tableau are like spear-carriers in an opera, or walk-ons in a stage play – actors who take on small roles with few or no lines. Barbara Pym created innumerable characters of this kind. Some do not even appear, but are merely talked about; they remain behind the scenes as “noises off” – sounds created offstage to be heard during a play’s performance. Pym gives her readers fleeting glimpses into the lives of a vast array of people spanning all segments of society.
