In recent years, Tokyo University of the Arts has secured its position as a national center that plays an important part in national strategies, as illustrated by the fact that it is the only arts university selected as a “Top Global University” and “Center of Innovation (COI)” Site. On the 130th anniversary of our founding in October 2017, we took the opportunity to conduct institution-wide discussions on our future direction for the next ten years, which culminated in the formulation of the “Tokyo Geidai NEXT 10 Vision.” Be innovative: Keep challenging to stay innovative and unique Be diverse: Keep providing diverse and inspiring environment Be international: Keep presenting Japanese art culture to the global community In the next 10 years, we will push forward toward these three visions. To fully demonstrate our capability and attraction as a globally unparalleled comprehensive arts university and rigorously promote the cultivation of outstanding artists who can play an active role in the world—not only in the artistic fields of fine art, music, and film, but also through our new Graduate School of Global Arts established in 2016—we strive to enhance, to a greater extent, our educational research environment and support system for our students under the “Tokyo Geidai NEXT 10 Vision.” Specifically, we will focus on the following: ① Promote initiatives to attract prominent artists from overseas, as well as diverse specialists and practitioners ② Expand opportunities to acquire international experience through means such as sending students to overseas universities, art festivals, and music festivals. ③ Enhance practical education and research programs in art organizations, businesses, etc. ④ Enhance the university’s education and research environment to ensure thorough, individualized instruction and small-group learning ⑤ Expand specialist staff who support hands-on guidance and practical training in workshops, studios, etc. ⑥ Provide world-class large workshop facilities, musical instruments, and filming and editing equipment To steadily implement these initiatives, we have decided to increase our tuition fees. Annual tuition for undergraduate and Practical Music Course students enrolling from the 2019 academic year as well as graduate students enrolling from the 2020 academic year will increase from the current rate of 535,800 yen to 642,960 yen. We will work even harder to improve the quality of our education and the standard of our student services while striving to enhance our financial support for students, including the establishment of new scholarships. We appreciate your kind understanding in this matter. Kazuki Sawa President, Tokyo University of the Arts Table of Contents I. • Shanghai, China Overview Introduction
Shanghai, China Overview Introduction The name Shanghai still conjures images of romance, mystery and adventure, but for decades it was an austere backwater. After the success of Mao Zedong's communist revolution in 1949, the authorities clamped down hard on Shanghai, castigating China's second city for its prewar status as a playground of gangsters and colonial adventurers. And so it was. In its heyday, the 1920s and '30s, cosmopolitan Shanghai was a dynamic melting pot for people, ideas and money from all over the planet. Business boomed, fortunes were made, and everything seemed possible. It was a time of breakneck industrial progress, swaggering confidence and smoky jazz venues. Thanks to economic reforms implemented in the 1980s by Deng Xiaoping, Shanghai's commercial potential has reemerged and is flourishing again. Stand today on the historic Bund and look across the Huangpu River. The soaring 1,614-ft/492-m Shanghai World Financial Center tower looms over the ambitious skyline of the Pudong financial district. Alongside it are other key landmarks: the glittering, 88- story Jinmao Building; the rocket-shaped Oriental Pearl TV Tower; and the Shanghai Stock Exchange. The 128-story Shanghai Tower is the tallest building in China (and, after the Burj Khalifa in Dubai, the second-tallest in the world). Glass-and-steel skyscrapers reach for the clouds, Mercedes sedans cruise the neon-lit streets, luxury- brand boutiques stock all the stylish trappings available in New York, and the restaurant, bar and clubbing scene pulsates with an energy all its own. Perhaps more than any other city in Asia, Shanghai has the confidence and sheer determination to forge a glittering future as one of the world's most important commercial centers.

  • Advanced Assemblage Analysis of Built Environment and Persistence of the Identity of Place in Yanesen
A Thesis for the Degree of Ph.D. in Engineering Advanced Assemblage Analysis of Built Environment and Persistence of the Identity of Place in Yanesen September, 2013. Graduate School of Science and Technology Keio University Muminović Milica Abstract: The Thesis advances methods of urban analysis based on the assemblage theory by increasing its capacity to address changes in built environment and relating them to persistences of the identity of place. In urban theory, the identity of place is defined as specific quality arising from a certain location, and highly related to its durability. The methodology proposed and tested in this thesis approaches place in its complexity and analyses the dynamics of change of a concrete place as a whole. The dynamics of change contribute to the persistence, which itself defines the identity of the place. The Yanesen precinct of Tokyo was selected because of its peculiar urban character, which remains strongly associated with urban forms and practices of the past (Edo period), although the components of its built environment have dramatically changed, leaving almost no original buildings. The methodology applied was developed on the basis of assemblage theory and issues arising from the particularity of the Yanesen itself. The resulting assembled method brings together various tools and methods, in order to approach the totality of the place identity with due sensibility, addressing the built environment as a dynamic and complex assemblage system. This study has shown that application of assemblage theory in place theory is possible and useful for better understanding of the identity of places and built environments in their full physical complexity and dynamics.
