Imperial Valley College Math Lab Functions: Composition and Inverse Functions FUNCTION COMPOSITION In order to perform a composition of functions, it is essential to be familiar with function notation. If you see something of the form “푓(푥) = [expression in terms of x]”, this means that whatever you see in the parentheses following f should be substituted for x in the expression. This can include numbers, variables, other expressions, and even other functions. EXAMPLE: 푓(푥) = 4푥2 − 13푥 푓(2) = 4 ∙ 22 − 13(2) 푓(−9) = 4(−9)2 − 13(−9) 푓(푎) = 4푎2 − 13푎 푓(푐3) = 4(푐3)2 − 13푐3 푓(ℎ + 5) = 4(ℎ + 5)2 − 13(ℎ + 5) Etc. A composition of functions occurs when one function is “plugged into” another function. The notation (푓 ○푔)(푥) is pronounced “푓 of 푔 of 푥”, and it literally means 푓(푔(푥)). In other words, you “plug” the 푔(푥) function into the 푓(푥) function. Similarly, (푔 ○푓)(푥) is pronounced “푔 of 푓 of 푥”, and it literally means 푔(푓(푥)). In other words, you “plug” the 푓(푥) function into the 푔(푥) function. WARNING: Be careful not to confuse (푓 ○푔)(푥) with (푓 ∙ 푔)(푥), which means 푓(푥) ∙ 푔(푥) . In particular, we are interested in "propositional" fragments of the functional language of recursion FLR [18, 17], i.e., without the value passing or abstraction allowed in FLR. The 'pure," propositional fragment FLRo turns out to coincide with the iteration theories of [1]. Our main focus here concerns the sharp contrast between the simple class of valid identities and the very complex consequence relation over several natural classes of models. -

THE SYLOW THEOREMS AND CLASSIFICATION OF SMALL FINITE ORDER GROUPS WILLIAM W. STEARNS Abstract. This thesis will provide an overview of various topics in group theory, all in order to accomplish the end goal of classifying all groups of order up to 15. An important precursor to classifying finite order groups, the Sylow Theorems illustrate what subgroups of a given group must exist, and constitute the first half of this thesis. Using these theorems in the latter sections we will classify all the possible groups of various orders up to isomorphism. In concluding this thesis, all possible distinct groups of orders up to 15 will be defined and the groundwork set for further study. 1. Introduction The results in this thesis require some background knowledge and motivation. To that end, material covered in an introductory course on abstract algebra should be sufficient. In particular, it is assumed that the reader is familiar with the concepts and definitions of: group, subgroup, coset, index, homomorphism, and kernel. -

1 Lagrange's theorem Definition 1.1. The index of a subgroup H in a group G, denoted [G : H], is the number of left cosets of H in G ( [G : H] is a natural number or infinite). Theorem 1.2 (Lagrange's Theorem). If G is a finite group and H is a subgroup of G then jHj divides jGj and jGj [G : H] = : jHj Proof. Recall that (see lecture 16) any pair of left cosets of H are either equal or disjoint. Monoids: Theme and Variations (Functional Pearl) Abstract The monoid is a humble algebraic structure, at first glance ve en downright boring. However, there’s much more to monoids than meets the eye. Using examples taken from the diagrams vector graphics framework as a case study, I demonstrate the power and beauty of monoids for library design. The paper begins with an extremely simple model of diagrams and proceeds through a series of incremental variations, all related somehow to the central theme of monoids. Along the way, I illustrate the power of compositional semantics; why you should also pay attention to the monoid’s even humbler cousin, the semigroup; monoid homomorphisms; and monoid actions. THE ANDO-HOPKINS-REZK ORIENTATION IS SURJECTIVE SANATH DEVALAPURKAR Abstract. We show that the map π∗MString ! π∗tmf induced by the Ando-Hopkins-Rezk orientation is surjective. This proves an unpublished claim of Hopkins and Mahowald. We do so by constructing an E1-ring B and a map B ! MString such that the composite B ! MString ! tmf is surjective on homotopy. Applications to differential topology, and in particular to Hirzebruch's prize question, are discussed. 1. Introduction The goal of this paper is to show the following result. Theorem 1.1. The map π∗MString ! π∗tmf induced by the Ando-Hopkins-Rezk orientation is surjective. This integral result was originally stated as [Hop02, Theorem 6.25], but, to the best of our knowledge, no proof has appeared in the literature. In [HM02], Hopkins and Mahowald give a proof sketch of Theorem 1.1 for elements of π∗tmf of Adams-Novikov filtration 0. The analogue of Theorem 1.1 for bo (namely, the statement that the map π∗MSpin ! π∗bo induced by the Atiyah-Bott-Shapiro orientation is surjective) is classical [Mil63]. In Section2, we present (as a warmup) a proof of this surjectivity result for bo via a technique which generalizes to prove Theorem 1.1. We construct an E1-ring A with an E1-map A ! MSpin. The E1-ring A is a particular E1-Thom spectrum whose mod 2 homology is given by the polynomial subalgebra 4 F2[ζ1 ] of the mod 2 dual Steenrod algebra. The Atiyah-Bott-Shapiro orientation MSpin ! bo is an E1-map, and so the composite A ! MSpin ! bo is an E1-map. -

We investigate the relationships be- tween them and with the group index. In particular, we show that the syntactic index is a generalisation of both the group index and the Rees index. We use this fact to prove further similarities between the group index and the Rees index. Group Theory
Chapter 1 Group Theory Most lectures on group theory actually start with the definition of what is a group. It may be worth though spending a few lines to mention how mathe- maticians came up with such a concept. Around 1770, Lagrange initiated the study of permutations in connection with the study of the solution of equations. He was interested in understanding solutions of polynomials in several variables, and got this idea to study the be- haviour of polynomials when their roots are permuted. This led to what we now call Lagrange’s Theorem, though it was stated as [5] If a function f(x1,...,xn) of n variables is acted on by all n! possible permutations of the variables and these permuted functions take on only r values, then r is a divisior of n!. It is Galois (1811-1832) who is considered by many as the founder of group theory. He was the first to use the term “group” in a technical sense, though to him it meant a collection of permutations closed under multiplication. Galois theory will be discussed much later in these notes. Galois was also motivated by the solvability of polynomial equations of degree n. From 1815 to 1844, Cauchy started to look at permutations as an autonomous subject, and introduced the concept of permutations generated by certain elements, as well as several nota- tions still used today, such as the cyclic notation for permutations, the product of permutations, or the identity permutation. He proved what we call today Cauchy’s Theorem, namely that if p is prime divisor of the cardinality of the group, then there exists a subgroup of cardinality p. -
