Patterns of body size distribution are also often studied. The distribution of body size within species is looked at for suggestions of differential mating strategies or niche variation among ontogenetic development. Patterns are also examined among species to determine the effects of competition, environmental factors, and phylogenetic inertia. -

A variety of collecting methods was used, including netting, light attracting, light trapping and pheromone trapping. The specimens were identified by the currently available pictorial sources and determination keys. Many were also sent to specialists for confirmation or identification. The majority of the data was from Kanawha County, reflecting the area of more intensive sampling effort by the senior author. Diet-based Sodium Regulation in Sixth-Instar Grasshoppers, Schistocerca americana (Drury) (Orthoptera: Acrididae) Shelby Kerrin Kilpatrick and Spencer T. Behmer Texas A&M University, Department of Entomology Edited by Benjamin Rigby and Shelby Kerrin Kilpatrick Abstract: This study analyzed sodium intake by Schistocerca americana (Drury) (Orthoptera: Acrididae) grasshoppers using three different seedling wheatgrass based diet treatments to simulate a natural food source. Sodium is a key nutrient for grasshopper cells, nerves, and reproduction. Grasshoppers acquire sodium from plants that they consume. However, it is unclear if grasshoppers self-regulate their sodium intake. Additionally, if grasshoppers self-regulate their sodium intake, the extent to which they do is uncertain. Newly molted sixth-instar grasshoppers were fed one of three diets in which the level of sodium that they had access to was varied. The S. americana grasshoppers consumed significantly less of the 0.5 M added sodium only diet when presented with an option to choose between this diet and a no-sodium-added diet (t = 9.6026, df = 7, P < 0.0001). Grasshoppers in the 0.5 M added sodium only treatment consumed a significantly lower amount of food (P < 0.0001) and gained a significantly lower mean mass (P < 0.0001), compared to the grasshoppers in the no-sodium-added only treatment. Our results generally correlated with previous studies on Locusta migratoria (L.) (Orthoptera: Acrididae), and information about the ecological tolerances and nutritional requirements of grasshoppers. Our data suggests that S. americana grasshoppers are capable of self-regulating their sodium intake. Additionally, we show that high concentrations of sodium in grasshopper diets have a negative effect on body mass. -

A faunal survey of the elateroidea of Montana by Catherine Elaine Seibert A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Science in Entomology Montana State University © Copyright by Catherine Elaine Seibert (1993) Abstract: The beetle family Elateridae is a large and taxonomically difficult group of insects that includes many economically important species of cultivated crops. Elaterid larvae, or wireworms, have a history of damaging small grains in Montana. Although chemical seed treatments have controlled wireworm damage since the early 1950's, it is- highly probable that their availability will become limited, if not completely unavailable, in the near future. In that event, information about Montana's elaterid fauna, particularity which species are present and where, will be necessary for renewed research efforts directed at wireworm management. A faunal survey of the superfamily Elateroidea, including the Elateridae and three closely related families, was undertaken to determine the species composition and distribution in Montana. Because elateroid larvae are difficult to collect and identify, the survey concentrated exclusively on adult beetles. This effort involved both the collection of Montana elateroids from the field and extensive borrowing of the same from museum sources. Results from the survey identified one artematopid, 152 elaterid, six throscid, and seven eucnemid species from Montana. County distributions for each species were mapped. In addition, dichotomous keys, and taxonomic and biological information, were compiled for various taxa. Species of potential economic importance were also noted, along with their host plants. Although the knowledge of the superfamily' has been improved significantly, it is not complete. -

Niepodległości 10, 61-875 Poznań, Poland Received: 27 March 2020 Accepted: 14 May 2020 Abstract The article presents the results of 3-year field studies, whose purpose was to assess the impact of maize sowing method, type of cultivar and NP fertiliser sowing method on the health of maize plants. Changing weather conditions during the study years significantly differentiated the percentage of maize plants damaged by pests and affected by diseases. The positive effect of the row method of NP fertiliser application in maize cultivation not only reduced plant infestation by Fusarium diseases, but also reduced Frit fly Oscinella( frit L.) pressure. The “stay-green” hybrid was characterized by a significantly lower susceptibility to feeding of the European corn borer (Ostrinia nubilalis Hbn.) compared to the traditional cultivar. Sowing maize of the traditional cultivar using the direct sowing system increased damage to plants caused by Frit fry larvae (Oscinella frit L.) compared to sowing into soil cultivated in a traditional way. -
