He is concurrently Chair Professor of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering. Prior to joining HKUST in August 2010, he was Clarence L. “Kelly” Johnson Collegiate Professor and Chairman of the Department of Aerospace Engineering of the University of Michigan. He was previously employed by the University of Florida and GE Research and Development Center in Schenectady, New York. He earned his BS degree from Tsing-Hua University, Taiwan, and his MSE and PhD degrees in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Michigan. Prof Shyy is a Fellow of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME). He has received awards for his research and professional contributions, including the AIAA 2003 Pendray Aerospace Literature Award, the ASME 2005 Heat Transfer Memorial Award, and The Engineers’ Council (Sherman Oaks, CA) 2009 Distinguished Educator Award. He has also served as a consultant and on a number of national and international committees to support and review numerous private and public organizations as well as higher educational institutes.     Professor Wei SHYY (史維教授) Professor Wei Shyy is currently Executive Vice-President & Provost and Chair Professor of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST). Professor Shyy joined HKUST as Provost in August 2010. Prior to HKUST, Professor Shyy was Clarence L. “Kelly” Johnson Collegiate Professor and Department Chair of Aerospace Engineering at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. Professor Shyy received his BS degree in Power Mechanical Engineering (1977) from Tsing Hua University in Hsinchu, Taiwan, and MSE (1981) and PhD (1982) degrees in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. A scholar of international stature, Professor Shyy is recognized for his contributions to aerospace and mechanical engineering. He is the author or a co- author of five books and numerous journals and conference articles dealing with a broad range of topics related to aerial and space flight vehicles. He was the Principal Investigator of several multi- institutional research projects on future space transport, bio-inspired flight, and computational aeronautical science. He is General Editor of the Cambridge Aerospace Book Series published by the Cambridge University Press, and Co-Editor-in-Chief of nine-volume Encyclopedia of Aerospace Engineering published by Wiley-Blackwell. He serves as editor and member of editorial board of numerous peer reviewed journals. Professor Shyy’s professional views have been quoted in various news media, including the New York Times and SCMP. These include:— (1) Books published or printed in Hong Kong and have been deposited with the Books Registration Office during this quarter. Publications by the Government Logistics Department, other than separate bills, ordinances, regulations, leaflets, loose-sheets and posters are included; and (2) First issue of periodicals published or printed in Hong Kong during this quarter. Details of their subsequent issues and related information can be found at the fourth quarter. (Please refer to paragraph 3 below) The number in brackets at the bottom right-hand corner of each entry represents the order of deposit of the book during the year, whereas the serial number at the top left-hand corner of each entry is purely an ordering device, linking the annual cumulated author index with the main body of the catalogue. In the fourth quarter, in addition to the list of publications deposited with the Books Registration Office during that quarter, the catalogue also includes the following information for the year:— (1) Chinese and English Author Index; (2) Publishers’ Names and Addresses; (3) Printers’ Names and Addresses; and (4) Chinese and English Periodicals Received;- their title, frequency, price and publisher.

The agility and spectacular flight performance of natural flyers – made possible by their flexible, deformable wing structures as well as outstanding wing, tail, and body coordination – are particularly sig- nificant. To design and build MAVs with performance comparable to natural flyers, it is essential to understand natural flyers’ combined flex- ible structural dynamics and aerodynamics. The primary focus of this book is to address recent developments in flapping wing aerodynam- ics. This book extends the work presented in Aerodynamics of Low Reynolds Number Flyers (Shyy et al. 2008). Dr. Wei Shyy is the Provost of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology and former Clarence L. “Kelly” Johnson Collegiate Professor and Department Chair of Aerospace Engineering at the Uni- versity of Michigan. Shyy is the author or co-author of four books and numerous journal and conference articles dealing with a broad range of topics related to aerial and space flight vehicles. He is Editor of the Cambridge Aerospace Series with Vigor Yang (Georgia Tech) and Co– Editor-in-Chief of the nine-volume Encyclopedia of Aerospace Engi- neering (2010). He received the 2003 AIAA Pendray Aerospace Lit- erature Award and the ASME 2005 Heat Transfer Memorial Award.
