The album featured a popular cover of the Tommy James & The Shondells hit "I Think We're Alone Now" (which was later covered by Tiffany) and "Lucky Number," which reached #3 in the U.K. She followed it with Flex (1980) and No Man's Land (1982) before fading from the scene. DESCRIPTORS *Audiodisks; Discographies; *Library Collection Development; *Library Collections; *Optical Disks; *Popular Music; *Public Libraries; Research Libraries; Tables (Data) IDENTIFIERS *Cleveland Public Library OH ABSTRACT In the 1970s and early 1980s, a few library researchers and scholars made a case for the importance of public libraries' acquisition of popular music, particularly rock music sound recordings. Their arguments were based on the anticipated historical and cultural importance of obtaining and maintaining a collection of these materials. Little new research in this direction has been performed since then. The question arose as to what, if anything, has changed since this time. This question was answered by examining the compact disc holdings of the Cleveland Public Library, a major research-oriented facility. This examination was accomplished using three discographies of essential rock music titles, as well as recent "Billboard" Top 200 Album charts. The results indicated a strong orientation toward the acquisition of recent releases, with the "Billboard" charts showing the largest percentages of holdings for the system. Meanwhile, the holdings vis-a-vis the essential discographies ran directly opposite the "Billboard" holdings. This implies a program of short-term patron satisfaction by providing current "hits," while disregarding the long-term benefits of a collection based on demonstrated artistic relevance.

A rush to sign new bands who could be (broadly) associated with punk, and the concomitant shift toward ‘new wave’ styles, led to a degree of UK chart success for a number of groups. The inclusion of punk and new wave songs on a series of low-budget compilations featuring cover versions of contemporary hits strikes a particularly discordant tone with punk’s self-styled image of a break with traditional music industry conventions. The albums released on the longstanding budget compilation series Top of the Pops between mid-1977 and early 1982 tell an interesting story about the cultural recuperation of punk, new wave and post-punk, and ask questions, perhaps, about the legitimacy of punk’s often mythologised ‘outsider status’.

  • There's a Story Behind the Lene Lovich Band…
FLEX MUSIC HQ, LONDON Email: [email protected] There’s a story behind the Lene Lovich Band… In 1992, Jude Rawlins, twenty-year-old singer/guitarist with recently formed English artrock band Subterraneans, crosses paths in the Netherlands with cult German punk queen Nina Hagen. During their brief acquaintance Jude attempts to play Nina an album by another German singer, Henry Cow’s Dagmar Krause. It is an album of Kurt Weill songs sung in English. Nina dismisses it with the words “Lene Lovich would do that so much better…” A decade or so later, Jude and Lene meet very briefly for the first time at a screening of Vicky Hopkins’ film Alpha Girls at a gallery in Bethnal Green, East London. Jude had intended to give Lene a copy of the latest Subterraneans album, but accidentally left it on the Tube. Another decade passes. It is November 2011, and Subterraneans are exhausted following the recent release of their ninth album. During the same period Lene has released only one album, Shadows and Dust in 2004. Her profile is, to say the very least, low. Meanwhile Jude is jaded with the law of diminishing returns, and watching everything he has worked so hard for being devalued by corporate entities that have no idea how much a song is worth to the hearts and minds that created it, and so sell it for a flat rate of 79pence. Sometimes less. Thus ends the prelude. Now begins Chapter One... Jude receives a message from a friend who is planning a free jazz re-imagining of the songs of Kurt Weill.
