Although shuttered since March 2020, OTC still produced many well-received live-streamed and online events, including two staged readings (Quiet Cross and Donna Orbits the Moon), two visual art tours at the Brooks Theater Art Gallery, two piano concerts (Robert Parker), three music concerts (Luke Monday, and Nina Herzog, twice), and A Christmas Carol: A Radio Play for the holidays; additionally, we hosted, filmed, and live-streamed the inaugural Oceanside Culture Festival. These wonderful productions provided our audiences with quality theatre, music, and visual arts experiences from the safety of their own homes, properly socially-distanced, and without the need for face masks. Our 2019-20 season began with a successful run of Foxfire (in partnership with Scripps Ranch Theatre), followed by a full run of A Christmas Carol: A Radio Play. March 2020 brought the launch of Sweet Charity – our most ambitious musical production ever – complete with live orchestra, the largest adult cast and crew ever for OTC, and the most expensive live theatre event in the history of the Brooks Theater stage! Although cut short after only three spectacular performances, Sweet Charity was acclaimed by well-attended audiences and poised for a highly successful four-week run. Other notable events this past year included the full-scale musical Seussical, Jr. (an OTC Youth Outreach collaboration with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Oceanside, including 50+ youth participants), successful Music Series concerts (including Rio Peligroso with Francis Blume and Nick Schnebelen Band with Backwater Blues Band), a planned collaboration with the Tustin Area Council For Fine Arts to produce Wizard of Oz, a strategic planning session with the OTC Board of Directors and Artistic Director Ted Leib to develop short-term plans and solutions for addressing COVID-19 challenges, and the addition of three new board members: Chase Tushaus, Ed Parish, and Erik Bradbury – Welcome! As we start fiscal 2021, we remain a financially stable and vibrant organization thanks to our generous individual donors, well-organized fundraising programs, virtual production proceeds, community and private grants, and local stimulus-related funding. THANK YOU ONE AND ALL! You are our lifeblood. Due to swift financial actions by our board early in the year, including strict cash-flow management practices, and significant reductions to operational expenses, OTC has sustained no formal debt. Although our positive cash-flow position has allowed us to sustain limited operations into 2021, additional support is necessary to weather ongoing COVID-19 restrictions. As we look forward to relaunching live performances, serving as a venue for artistic endeavors, community events, and youth education, in keeping with our mission, and as stewards of the historic Brooks Theater – our board is embarking on a 2021-22 Capital Campaign to fund the redesign and renovation of the Brooks Theater lobby, studio space, restrooms, and air filtration systems. This will extend the longevity and functionality of this historic community asset. I am immensely proud of our accomplishments this past year, and I am eternally grateful for our wonderful donors, patrons, volunteers, board, and sta. I wish to extend a special “Thank You” to our wonderful production partner Scripps Ranch Theatre, our Oceanside California Cultural District partners, the City of Oceanside, and MainStreet Oceanside, just to name a few. Nevertheless, it features a few stomping, pop- metal nuggets in the form of the sprite “Sweet Surrender,” the slightly seedy “Trash Queen” and the messy-but-fun Gary Glitter cover “Alrite with the Boyz.” The band would go on to release two more albums with a dirtier, more street-oriented sound that lacked the personality and cheap charm of the first LP. • Babes in Bondage: Indentured Irish Children in Philadelphia in The
Babes in Bondage: Indentured Irish Children in Philadelphia in the Nineteenth Century HE experiences of childhood, emotional, enhanced by the innocence of youth, and profoundly affecting, are a challenge Tto the imagination of the social historian. Children, even more than adults submerged in the mass of illiterate and inarticulate people in the past, are largely without historical chroniclers.1 Study of the influence of social customs, of home life, education and work life requires insight into the conditions of childhood. Not only were attitudes toward childhood different in the past from those of our own time, but there were types of juvenile experience quite different from contemporary forms of childhood participation. This is readily illustrated by the institution of child indentures in the nineteenth century. In Philadelphia the practice of legally binding children extended back to colonial times, from whence it was derived from England. Part of William Penn's original scheme for populating his vast holdings was a plan by which emigrants would be first indentured to captains of ships in England, and upon landing in Pennsylvania the indenture would then be sold to an American buyer.2 The institution of indenture was ancient, rooted in law and custom, and accepted as part of the economic and social life in the colonies. 1 The beginnings of a broader-based study of family and childhood have emerged in such studies as Shirley Glubock (ed.), Home Life and Child Care in Colonial Days (New York, 1969); Harvey L. Graff, "Patterns of Dependency and Child Development in the Mid- Nineteenth Century City: A Sample from Boston," History of Education Quarterly, XVII (1973), 12,9-143; Joseph F.

I was born on a farm of about 70 acres in a bowl shaped valley surrounded with mountains in South Armagh. My mother who died when I was 15 years of age was an O'Hanlon. Her family claimed direct descent from the Princes of Orior who before the plantation of Ulster were the traditional standard bearers to the O'Neills, Princes of Tyrone. The last chieftain of the O'Hanlon clan was Redmond 0'Hanlon who at the time of the plantation of Ulster in or about 1670 was serving as an officer in the French Army and had been awarded the title of Count by the French Government. My earliest recollection of my mother was her recounting to me the successes and adventures of her famous forebearer who returned to Ulster to drive the Sassanagh out and deal in particular with the undertakers who had murdered his Ulster kith and kin and taken possession of his family lands in the neighbourhood of Tanderagee, Co. Armagh. I was told how this same Redmond O'Hanlon gathered together a body of men who were prepared to take up the hazardous endeavour of an Irish Rapparee in order to harass and dispossess the planters who had taken over all the rich lands of the area.

  • Origins of Heavy Metal.Pdf
Origins! (part 1) By Andy Glover-Whitley When anyone says those immortal words “Heavy Metal” you always know the vast majorities response to them. They scurry off like vampires from a sunburst. Yet this one genre is actually a British homemade affair and the Heavy Metal scene of the late 1970’s and early 1980’s was a breakthrough in many ways for the disaffected white youth of the day living in the industrial cities and heartlands of Britain as well as large areas of then run down inner London. The kids heroes had grown apart from them and were now virtually untouchable, such groups as Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin, Uriah Heep, Judas Priest, AC/DC, UFO, Scorpions and others. They had literally sold their souls for Rock and Roll and the only alternative was Punk Rock. Not again to everyone’s taste. So what did the kids in these places do? Well they went and took the heavy riffs of their heroes and mixed it with a bit of the ethos of the punk movement of doing it yourself and out popped Heavy Metal. Well not quite like that. In actuality most of the kids were still into the big stadium heavy rock bands and wanted to emulate their heroes and so bands sprang up, as they always did doing just that. The only thing was as ‘would be rock and roll stars’ their heroes were too far from them to be of any massive influence and so they turned to what is sometimes ingloriously termed the second rank of bands.
