Printed in the U.S.A. DEAR PATRONS © Carter Rose Welcome to the AT&T Performing Arts Center and to The Band’s Visit. It’s one of the most award-winning musicals in history, winning ten (ten!) Tonys including Best Musical, and a Grammy for Best Musical Theater Album. Such a great musical should be seen in a great venue, so we couldn’t wait for North Texas audiences to experience it right here in the Winspear Opera House. If it’s Broadway you love, next up is An American in Paris, followed by Bandstand then The SpongeBob Musical! And we recently announced our upcoming 2020/2021 season, which includes Sister Act, Summer: The Donna Summer Musical, Oklahoma!, What the Constitution Means to Me, Waitress, Hadestown, and The Prom. This season is the newest and most current we’ve ever presented. None of these shows have been seen in the Winspear Opera House before, and most are touring for the very first time. Even the classic Oklahoma! has been reimagined. And the AT&T Performing Arts Center is more than Broadway. We present concerts, like Il Volo on February 27; comedy, like Jeanne Robertson on February 28; the finest dance companies in the world, with our partner TITAS/Dance Unbound, like Alvin Ailey next month; family shows like Lightwire Theater’s The Ugly Duckling in March; and speakers, like Hasan Minhaj who will be here in April. We provide stages for our five esteemed resident companies: Anita N. Martinez Ballet Folklorico, Dallas Black Dance Theatre, The Dallas Opera, Dallas Theater Center and Texas Ballet Theater. And through our Elevator Project we present the best of new and emerging Dallas arts groups. No matter what kind of live performing arts you prefer, you’ll find many reasons to visit our campus again soon. AT&T Performing Arts Center – it’s Yours to Discover! • History and Background
History and Background Book by Lisa Kron, music by Jeanine Tesori Based on the graphic novel by Alison Bechdel SYNOPSIS Both refreshingly honest and wildly innovative, Fun Home is based on Vermont author Alison Bechdel’s acclaimed graphic memoir. As the show unfolds, meet Bechdel at three different life stages as she grows and grapples with her uniquely dysfunctional family, her sexuality, and her father’s secrets. ABOUT THE WRITERS LISA KRON was born and raised in Michigan. She is the daughter of Ann, a former community activist, and Walter, a German-born lawyer and Holocaust survivor. Kron spent much of her childhood feeling like an outsider because of her religion and sexuality. She attended Kalamazoo College before moving to New York in 1984, where she found success as both an actress and playwright. Many of Kron’s plays draw upon her childhood experiences. She earned early praise for her autobiographical plays 2.5 Minute Ride and 101 Humiliating Stories. In 1989, Kron co-founded the OBIE Award-winning theater company The Five Lesbian Brothers, a troupe that used humor to produce work from a feminist and lesbian perspective. Her play Well, which she both wrote and starred in, opened on Broadway in 2006. Kron was nominated for the Best Actress in a Play Tony Award for her work. JEANINE TESORI is the most honored female composer in musical theatre history. Upon receiving her degree in music from Barnard College, she worked as a musical theatre conductor before venturing into the art of composing in her 30s. She made her Broadway debut in 1995 when she composed the dance music for How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, and found her first major success with the off- Broadway musical Violet (Obie Award, Lucille Lortel Award), which was later produced on Broadway in 2014.

  • Babes in Bondage: Indentured Irish Children in Philadelphia in The
Babes in Bondage: Indentured Irish Children in Philadelphia in the Nineteenth Century HE experiences of childhood, emotional, enhanced by the innocence of youth, and profoundly affecting, are a challenge Tto the imagination of the social historian. Children, even more than adults submerged in the mass of illiterate and inarticulate people in the past, are largely without historical chroniclers.1 Study of the influence of social customs, of home life, education and work life requires insight into the conditions of childhood. Not only were attitudes toward childhood different in the past from those of our own time, but there were types of juvenile experience quite different from contemporary forms of childhood participation. This is readily illustrated by the institution of child indentures in the nineteenth century. In Philadelphia the practice of legally binding children extended back to colonial times, from whence it was derived from England. Part of William Penn's original scheme for populating his vast holdings was a plan by which emigrants would be first indentured to captains of ships in England, and upon landing in Pennsylvania the indenture would then be sold to an American buyer.2 The institution of indenture was ancient, rooted in law and custom, and accepted as part of the economic and social life in the colonies. 1 The beginnings of a broader-based study of family and childhood have emerged in such studies as Shirley Glubock (ed.), Home Life and Child Care in Colonial Days (New York, 1969); Harvey L. Graff, "Patterns of Dependency and Child Development in the Mid- Nineteenth Century City: A Sample from Boston," History of Education Quarterly, XVII (1973), 12,9-143; Joseph F.
