Message from the Vice-Chancellor It is with great pleasure I welcome the first newsletter of the University. The University believes in delivering quality health care education in all systems of Medicine-Medical,

Dental, AYUSH, Pharmacy, Nursing and Allied Health Sciences. This year has witnessed many milestones in the progress of the University. The Curricula has been revamped for all Courses from undergraduate upto Superspeciality levels. Ph.D. regulations have been reformed to promote more research. The University offers new on-line courses and Telemedicine services. All the Departments of the University have been strengthened to deliver more research programs, new courses, better infrastructure and services. On-screen evaluation of Examinations, digitalisation and e-governance has been implemented for more transparency and paperless administration. The Tamil Nadu Dr.M.G.R.Medical University, the Multi Faculty Health University, Madras came into existence from the academic year 1988 by an Act of the State Government called the Tamil Nadu Medical University Act 1987 – Act No..37 of 1987 and received the assent of the President of India on 24th September 1987. The nomenclature of the University was changed as The Tamil Nadu Dr. M.G.R. Medical University by an Ordinance during the year 1990. The Provision of the Act are in conformity with the University Grants Commission Norms. Prof. Dr. Lalitha Kameswaran, Director of Medical Education, Madras was appointed as the Special Officer to oversee the formation of Medical University in the year 1987. Subsequently, she was appointed as the first Vice-Chancellor of this University on 12.07.1988.

The Administrative Office of the University functioned in the Race Course Bungalow in Main Road, Guindy from 1988 to May 1989. From May 1989, this University functioned in the Periyar Building, , Chennai till June 1994. This University started functioning in its new Building at Guindy from 13th June 1994 when Prof. Dr. B.P. Rajan, was the Vice-Chancellor of this University.

The jurisdiction of this University extends over the whole state of Tamil Nadu excluding , Annamalai Nagar. The institutions imparting education in Medical, Dental, AYUSH and AHS (Allied Health Sciences) have been brought under its ambit.

The students admitted to the various Medical and Para Medical Courses after 01.3.1988 come under this Medical University as per the Govt. notification issued in G.O.Ms.No.1628, Health Department, dated 23.08.1988.

The main objectives of the University are -

1. To provide for research and for the advancement and dissemination of knowledge in the field of Medical Sciences; 2. To organise advance studies and research programmes from time to time. 3. To develop research facilities.

2 The Government of Tamil Nadu in G.O.No.69 dated 22.01.93 permitted the adoption of the Govt. Medical College and Hospital by the Medical University to develop it as its centre of excellence and to implement its innovative methods.

In its nascent stage, 15 (fifteen) Board of studies and 11 (Eleven) Faculties were constituted by the elected Governing Council and approved by the Standing Academic Board.

This University was formally inaugurated by His Excellency the President of India, New Delhi during the year 1990.

The first Convocation of this University was held on 14.10.1990 and Dr. Kalaignar M. Karunanidhi, Hon'ble Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu has graced the occasion as the Chief Guest and was honoured with D.Sc. (Honoris Causa). The second Convocation of this University was held on 29.09.1992 and Dr. J. Jayalalitha, Hon'ble Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu has graced the occasion as the Chief Guest and was honoured with D.Sc. (Honoris Causa).

10 Health Tips…..

Chennai has no winter but the month of December is cooler with a nip in the air.

Dry skin and sore throat occur commonly. For dry skin, apply coconut oil before bath on the exposed areas of skin like feet, ankle, forearm and elbows. Wash with mild soap and water.

Sore Throat  Hot water gargle with or without salt twice daily especially before going to bed is good for throat irritation.

 Regular intake of citrus fruits like oranges, pineapple and papaya which have vitamin C will help in improving immunity against respiratory viruses.
