Technical Communication Montana Tech 2019 ii Abstract I have taken a manuscript through the book publishing process to produce a camera-ready print book and e-book. This includes copyediting, designing layout templates, laying out the document in InDesign, and producing an index. My research is focused on the best practices and standards for publishing. Lessons learned from my research and experience include layout best practices, particularly linespacing and alignment guidelines, as well as the limitations and capabilities of InDesign, particularly its endnote functionality. Based on the results of this project, I can recommend self-publishers to understand the software and distribution platforms prior to publishing a book to ensure the required specifications are met to avoid complications later in the process. This document provides details on many of the software, distribution, and design options available for self-publishers to consider. This thesis works to calm fears and worries of the digital transition of literature by documenting the work of certain small presses in this time of change. -

Memoirs of WWII –97th Infantry Division It has been the experience of all veterans that time brings a blurring of detail, that memories are less exact after events, and that first hand recordings in print on the spot serve best to put down in black and white what happened. ~ Unknown writer. REFLECTIONS ON THE 97TH INFANTRY DIVISION On his 90th Birthday Brigadier General Sherman V Hasbrouck As Told to J.W. Redding 18th June 1988 PREFACE The 97th Infantry Division was originally organized in September, 1918, and saw action in France during WWI. It was demobilized 20 November of the same year and reconstituted as an organized reserve unit. The Division was reactivated 25 February 1943 at Camp Swift, Texas, under the command of Maj Gen Louis A Craig. Brig Gen Julien Barnes was the Division Artillery Commander. The 303d Inf Regt and the 303d FA Bn were the only units with the reactivated division that can boast of battle streamers from World War I. The Division went through basic and unit training at Camp Swift. It took their physical fitness test there. The artillery battalions took their AGF firing test at Camp Bowie, Texas. During the latter part of October, 1943, the Division departed Camp Swift for the Louisiana Maneuver area, spending the next 3 months in the field on division exercises. Following the Louisiana Maneuver period, the Division was transferred to Ft. Leonard Wood, Missouri where it continued with unit training. While at Ft Leonard Wood, Gen Craig was assigned to the command of the 23d Corps which he relinquished to take command of a combat division in Europe. -

Scholarly communication is an ever-evolving practice. As publishing advanced from the printed format to digital formats, new trends, practices and platforms emerged in academia. As reputable publishers adapted their business models to accommodate open access, many non-reputable publishers have emerged with questionable business models and less-than- favourable or unacceptable publishing services. Objectives. This paper discusses changing trends in scholarly publishing, the advent of and problems caused by pervasive predatory publishing practices, and possible solutions. The paper also investigates possible alternatives to Beall’s list and whether a “one-stop shop” black- or white list would serve as a comprehensive tool for scholarly authors. Results. The paper concludes that there is no “one-stop shop” or comprehensive resource or guidelines available at this stage for scholarly authors to consult before publishing. It alerts scholars to be cautious and to do research about potential publishers, before submitting manuscripts for publication. Contributions. It provides recommendations and some useful resources to assist authors before they publish their works. INTRODUCTION The landscape of scholarly communication is ever-evolving. Ever since the first printed publication there have been variant policies, practices, standards and processes in publishing houses. There have been excellent high or gold standard publishers offering peer-review by expert researchers in their specific disciplines. They also offer impact factors attractive to researchers, reasonable subscription fees and ancillary services. -

Reaching underserved readers with writing from a broad coalition of authors contributes to the vibrancy of our communities, and helps literature to prosper as an evolving and vital artform. Through book distribution, events, and public advocacy, SPD provides small presses and their authors with the reliable and professional network they need. WHAT WE DO SPD distributes independently published literary titles to all of the channels normally served by a distributor. These include independent book stores, chain stores, other wholesalers, jobbers (who sell to libraries), libraries and online booksellers. President's Welcome It’s a pleasure to welcome you to the 2020 Independent Publishing Conference, the Small Press Network’s ninth annual signature event that’s become a must-attend forum for publishing professionals, researchers and those entering the industry. This year the conference is being held entirely online for the first time, and we welcome attendees from around Australia and from around the globe who are able to join us thanks to the accessibility offered by technology. Obviously 2020 has been a uniquely challenging year for the book industry. The conference program is focused on the issues that have engaged us throughout this Covid-disrupted year, and we also look to the future as we recover and adapt to whatever the ‘new normal’ will be. The conference sessions are all presented by industry professionals whose time and contribution is much appreciated, as is the organisation undertaken by SPN’s board, staff, contractors and volunteer associates. Putting the conference together has been a collective effort by individuals with a shared interest in publishing and the issues facing it. I appreciate the efforts of all of them.
