The Catherine Berg Summer Musical Theatre will be presenting the musical “Thoroughly Modern Millie” on July 13 and 14 at 7:30 PM in the Claude C. Deck Performing Arts Center. Tickets are $12.00 for adults and $10.00 for students and senior citizens. “Thoroughly Modern Millie,” winner of the 2000 Tony award for Best Musical and Best Actress (just to name a few awards won by this endearing show). Millie is a comedic musical who tells the story of small-town girl from the Midwest who goes to New York, to try to make it big, but realizes that success does not happen overnight. In the meantime, our small-town, isolated and naive young girl grows into a bonafide flapper who falls in love with NYC, foils a robbery, finds love and becomes "thoroughly modern." Auditions have not yet been scheduled, but they will be held before the end of May. Interested students should listen to the school announcements for more information.

Six Tips for the Summer Before Senior Year Also check out your Junior STAR Conference folder for many tips, ideas and resources

Rising high school seniors have one last summer before adulthood. No matter whether the student has a job, is taking a course, or has other summer obligations, there is time both for fun AND for strengthening future plans. Here are some tips for summer.

Think about your interests. Think about what is important to you and why. What do you find interesting? What kinds of problems do you like to solve? Then look toward the future: What careers are related to those interests? Which campuses can serve those interests and/or help you achieve your goals? Those are the campuses you should apply to.

Immerse yourself in something. Spend your summertime productively. Read books about a subject you find interesting. Get a job. Attend a summer camp. Read high-quality newspapers or magazines. Develop a new skill or advance one you already have. Volunteer. Did we mention you should read? (YES, three times!) Shadow someone who has a career you might enjoy. Learn in different ways!

Start a résumé. Consider it as a list of things that you’ve done during your high school years. Include activities, volunteer experiences, jobs, honors and awards, and anything else that is important about you. You will refer to this list many times as you complete your applications for admission and scholarships. You can also give this list to someone who agrees to write a letter of recommendation for you during the summer.

Prepare for your applicant’s statements. Many of our campuses want to know what you bring to the campus community. A way to begin is to think about your experiences with work, classes, volunteering, and other ways that you spend your time. What is meaningful about these experiences? What have you learned, and how have you changed? How do your experiences make you unique?

Log in to an App in a Snap webinar. UW Help is providing several webinars in August to familiarize students with applying for admission. They’ll introduce you to the application, cover common trouble spots, and answer your questions. Sessions usually last 30 minutes. The webinars are free and registration at the UW Help website is required.

Visit campuses? The best time to visit a campus is during the academic year when there are lots of students around. However, if you haven’t had the chance to tour campuses until summer, make sure to still go. Take along a parent or other adult. The campus won’t be full of activity like during the academic year, but you will still learn a lot from the visit.

Rising seniors can surely take time to have fun during the summer. Luckily, there are lots of hours in the summer so that they can focus on some productive experiences as well—which can be equally as fun.

Campus Visits The spring of your junior year is the best time to get out and visit campuses (technical, 2 or 4 year) and get a feel for which school “fits” for you! While it’s important to meet with admissions counselors and take the official campus tour, it’s also helpful to take your own personal tour. Check out the places they don’t show you, talk to a student in the student union about what they like about the school, as well as what they are frustrated with. Pick up a campus newspaper to see what’s important to students and soak in the environment. If you don’t feel like the school is a good fit, it may be a difficult place for you to find success.

MN Private College Week Minnesota’s Private Colleges and Universities invite students to visit their campuses during the week of June 25-29, 2018. Visit www.mnprivatecolleges.org/mpcw to register for your tour(s).

WI Private College Week Wisconsin Private Colleges and Universities invite students to visit their campuses during the week of July 9-14, 2018. Visit www.Wisconsinsprivatecolleges.org/visit to register for your tour(s).

College Fairs College Fairs are a great way to explore many colleges all on the same day. There are many college fairs. This summer families can find regional fairs such as Colleges That Change Lives held in Chicago and Minneapolis on August 19 and 20. Visit https://ctcl.org/info-sessions/ .

Tips for re-taking the ACT test

If a junior wishes to retake the ACT, here are some tips that can help make test day go smoothly:

• Check your calculator. Be sure your calculator is permitted for use during the math section; visit actstudent.org to find out if your calculator is allowed. • Make sure you have your ticket. If you don’t have your ticket yet, sign in to your ACT web account and print your ticket now. If you wait until test day, you could experience delays if there is heavy server traffic or if you have trouble logging in. • Make sure you have a valid photo ID. Check out the ID requirements on the Test Day Checklist at actstudent.org and make sure you bring your photo ID on test day. • Make sure to bring your printed ticket and valid photo ID to the test center. Without both your printed ticket and a valid photo ID, you won’t be admitted to test. • Don’t bring your cell phone into the test center. If your cell phone goes off during the test or if you are caught using it at any time during testing -- even during breaks -- you will be dismissed and your test will not be scored. • Make sure your test counts (don’t cheat). Your answer document will not be scored if you give or receive assistance during the test. If you suspect someone of cheating on the ACT, let us know. They’ll take it from there.
