    Shiva’s Waterfront Temples: Reimagining the Sacred Architecture of India’s Deccan Region Subhashini Kaligotla Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2015 © 2015 Subhashini Kaligotla All rights reserved ABSTRACT Shiva’s Waterfront Temples: Reimagining the Sacred Architecture of India’s Deccan Region Subhashini Kaligotla This dissertation examines Deccan India’s earliest surviving stone constructions, which were founded during the 6th through the 8th centuries and are known for their unparalleled formal eclecticism. Whereas past scholarship explains their heterogeneous formal character as an organic outcome of the Deccan’s “borderland” location between north India and south India, my study challenges the very conceptualization of the Deccan temple within a binary taxonomy that recognizes only northern and southern temple types. Rejecting the passivity implied by the borderland metaphor, I emphasize the role of human agents—particularly architects and makers—in establishing a dialectic between the north Indian and the south Indian architectural systems in the Deccan’s built worlds and built spaces. Secondly, by adopting the Deccan temple cluster as an analytical category in its own right, the present work contributes to the still developing field of landscape studies of the premodern Deccan. I read traditional art-historical evidence—the built environment, sculpture, and stone and copperplate inscriptions—alongside discursive treatments of landscape cultures and phenomenological and experiential perspectives. As a result, I am able to present hitherto unexamined aspects of the cluster’s spatial arrangement: the interrelationships between structures and the ways those relationships influence ritual and processional movements, as well as the symbolic, locative, and organizing role played by water bodies.

ABSTRACT The triangular Hill Fort Shivneri had been used by Yadvas of Ancient Devagiri Kingdom as guard / check post and old trading route from Desh ( interior country ) to the Arabian Sea Port City of Kalyan . The Junnar city was an important trade centre in the 1st century AD during Satvahana Kingdom reign in the region. The military fortification was made by the Maratha Cheifs in 17th century (1630 AD) . The great Hindu Maratha worrier Chhattrapati Shivaji was born at the Fort on 19th February 1630 AD and his name was dedicated to GodessShivai Devi of fort. The rigid and highly stable grounds of Shivneri Hill provide the intact super structure of ShivneriFort . The horizontal flat topped plateaue table lands are rigid and compact in nature, belonging to the trappean basaltic rocks of Cretaceaous ages. The fort was under possession of Maratha Chief (Bhonsale) from 1595 AD till the Anglo – Maratha war of 1820 AD . In this study, the lithologic and geomorphic characteristics of Shivneri Hill region and suitability of fortification under existing physical domain of the territory has been interpreted and analysed using saterllite imagery data of the terrain.

KUMAR: Will the Minister of CULTURE be pleased to state: (a) whether the Government has finalized its proposal for sending its entry for world heritage status long with the criteria to select entry for world heritage site status; (b) if so, the details thereof along with the names of temples, churches, mosques and monuments 2Iected and declared as national heritage in various States of the country, State-wise; (c) whether the Government has ignored Delhi as its official entry to UNESCO and if so, the details thereof and the reasons therefor; (d) whether, some sites selected for UNESCO entry are under repair and renovation; (e) if so, the details thereof and the funds sanctioned by the Government in this regard so far, ate-wise; and (f) the action plan of the Government to attract more tourists to these sites. B. The Guru-Shishya and Gharana tradition • It is another crucial feature which is common for all the classical music traditions of India. For centuries, this Guru-shishya transmission has made it possible to carry forward the intense experiences innately embedded in this great tradition of enlightened practitioners of music. • The musical gharanas of north Indian or Hindustani classical music have also contributed to the diversity of their form of music by presenting a distinct style of it. Gut of these one hundred and fifty five places the author has visited. Other places have been included to maice the information complete. There are 201 places mentioned in various inscrip­ tions (see Table below) out of which 130 places were visited by the author. In addition 25 places though not mentioned were visited and an account of all such is recorded. Thus this is a Gazetteer-like account of the places which cover the period from 500 A.D. to 1300 A.D. having some antiquarian importance.
