Shiva's Waterfront Temples
Shiva’s Waterfront Temples: Reimagining the Sacred Architecture of India’s Deccan Region Subhashini Kaligotla Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2015 © 2015 Subhashini Kaligotla All rights reserved ABSTRACT Shiva’s Waterfront Temples: Reimagining the Sacred Architecture of India’s Deccan Region Subhashini Kaligotla This dissertation examines Deccan India’s earliest surviving stone constructions, which were founded during the 6th through the 8th centuries and are known for their unparalleled formal eclecticism. Whereas past scholarship explains their heterogeneous formal character as an organic outcome of the Deccan’s “borderland” location between north India and south India, my study challenges the very conceptualization of the Deccan temple within a binary taxonomy that recognizes only northern and southern temple types. Rejecting the passivity implied by the borderland metaphor, I emphasize the role of human agents—particularly architects and makers—in establishing a dialectic between the north Indian and the south Indian architectural systems in the Deccan’s built worlds and built spaces. Secondly, by adopting the Deccan temple cluster as an analytical category in its own right, the present work contributes to the still developing field of landscape studies of the premodern Deccan. I read traditional art-historical evidence—the built environment, sculpture, and stone and copperplate inscriptions—alongside discursive treatments of landscape cultures and phenomenological and experiential perspectives. As a result, I am able to present hitherto unexamined aspects of the cluster’s spatial arrangement: the interrelationships between structures and the ways those relationships influence ritual and processional movements, as well as the symbolic, locative, and organizing role played by water bodies. -

The Elphinstone Stampede: Why the story of Elphinstone is the story of Mumbai 117 The Elphinstone Stampede: why the story of Elphinstone is the story of Mumbai Kunal Purohit On 29th It is easy to dismissively attribute the story behind 29th September, September’s crushing stampede in Mumbai’s Elphinstone Road 2017 there was a station to a narrow pedestrian bridge. It is also convenient. stampede on the Policy-makers and the ruling political class, locally and nationally, foot overbridge offered a wider bridge as its panacea almost immediately. connecting But, the story of Elphinstone is the story of Mumbai. The Elphinstone Road seeds of the stampede lie not in an unwidened bridge. It lies in the years of neglect the city has witnessed, a deliberate neglect Station and Parel made necessary by the collusion of the private and the public to Suburban Station, the exclusive interests of the private. The stampede is its ugliest leading to 23 manifestation. Ironically, the neglect is symbolic on the streets of deaths and several Elphinstone Road better than anywhere else in the city. injuries. Elphinstone Road is witness to events that have transformed Mumbai’s character, spatial and social. The area has witnessed the emergence of the city’s textile mills, the slow creation of Girangaon, a combined milieu of the homes and workplaces of these mill workers and their families. The area has also witnessed its death, celebrated by the gleaming towers, five-starred hotels, tony pubs and bars that now stand in their place. The transition from the new to the old, from the chawl to the tower, is the story of Mumbai. -

ABSTRACT The triangular Hill Fort Shivneri had been used by Yadvas of Ancient Devagiri Kingdom as guard / check post and old trading route from Desh ( interior country ) to the Arabian Sea Port City of Kalyan . The Junnar city was an important trade centre in the 1st century AD during Satvahana Kingdom reign in the region. The military fortification was made by the Maratha Cheifs in 17th century (1630 AD) . The great Hindu Maratha worrier Chhattrapati Shivaji was born at the Fort on 19th February 1630 AD and his name was dedicated to GodessShivai Devi of fort. The rigid and highly stable grounds of Shivneri Hill provide the intact super structure of ShivneriFort . The horizontal flat topped plateaue table lands are rigid and compact in nature, belonging to the trappean basaltic rocks of Cretaceaous ages. The fort was under possession of Maratha Chief (Bhonsale) from 1595 AD till the Anglo – Maratha war of 1820 AD . In this study, the lithologic and geomorphic characteristics of Shivneri Hill region and suitability of fortification under existing physical domain of the territory has been interpreted and analysed using saterllite imagery data of the terrain. -
