Bamcinématek Announces the World Theatrical Premiere Run of Jacques Rivette‟S Long-Unseen, 13- Hour Masterpiece out 1: Noli M
BAMcinématek announces the world theatrical premiere run of Jacques Rivette‟s long-unseen, 13- hour masterpiece OUT 1: Noli me Tangere (1971) in a new restoration, Nov 4—19 “The cinephile‟s holy grail.”—Dennis Lim, The New York Times The Wall Street Journal is the title sponsor of BAM Rose Cinemas and BAMcinématek. Brooklyn, NY/Aug 11, 2015—BAMcinématek announces the world theatrical premiere run of Jacques Rivette’s long-unseen masterpiece OUT 1: Noli me Tangere (1971), screening in a new DCP restoration courtesy of Carlotta Films US from Wednesday, November 4 through Thursday, November 19. The restoration and reappearance of Jacques Rivette’s legendary magnum opus brings this long- impossible-to-see, 13-hour masterpiece to the big screen. Over eight episodes shot on 16mm, a cast of French New Wave icons improvise a spellbinding tale based on Honoré de Balzac’s History of the Thirteen, involving two theater troupes rehearsing Aeschylus, a female con artist (Juliet Berto) who seduces her victims, and a deaf-mute (until he speaks) busker (Jean-Pierre Léaud) on a quest to uncover a mysterious secret society. As the characters’ paths crisscross and the film’s puzzle-box structure—including one 45-minute take—grows ever more elaborate, a portrait of post- May 1968 Paris and its dashed dreams emerges. The result is a cinematic experience unlike any other, in which, as Rivette himself put it: ―the fiction swallows everything up and then self-destructs.‖ An unfinished version of OUT 1 premiered at the Maison de la Culture in Le Havre in 1971 before being edited down to the four-hour OUT 1: Spectre. -

Paradoxes of the Nouvelle Vague
ARTICLES · Cinema Comparat/ive Cinema · Vol. I · No. 2. · 2013 · 77-82 Paradoxes of the Nouvelle Vague Marcos Uzal ABSTRACT This essay begins at the start of the magazine Cahiers du cinéma and with the film-making debut of five of its main members: François Truffaut, Claude Chabrol, Eric Rohmer, Jacques Rivette and Jean-Luc Godard. At the start they have shared approaches, tastes, passions and dislikes (above all, about a group of related film-makers from so-called ‘classical cinema’). Over the course of time, their aesthetic and political positions begin to divide them, both as people and in terms of their work, until they reach a point where reconciliation is not posible between the ‘midfield’ film-makers (Truffaut and Chabrol) and the others, who choose to control their conditions or methods of production: Rohmer, Rivette and Godard. The essay also proposes a new view of work by Rivette and Godard, exploring a relationship between their interest in film shoots and montage processes, and their affinities with various avant-gardes: early Russian avant-garde in Godard’s case and in Rivette’s, 1970s American avant-gardes and their European translation. KEYWORDS Nouvelle Vague, Jean-Luc Godard, Jacques Rivette, Eric Rohmer, Claude Chabrol, François Truffaut, radical, politics, aesthetics, montage. 77 PARADOXES OF THE NOUVELLE VAGUE In this essay the term ‘Nouvelle Vague’ refers that had emerged from it: they considered that specifically to the five film-makers in this group cinematic form should be explored as a kind who emerged from the magazine Cahiers du of contraband, using the classic art of mise-en- cinéma: Eric Rohmer, Jacques Rivette, Jean-Luc scène rather than a revolutionary or modernist Godard, Claude Chabrol and François Truffaut. -

Their love is mired in a mountain of routine and disenchantment. To help keep Zorica from getting deported, Iva gets Damien to promise he’ll go to his father, a state department official, for help. But Damien and his father have a distant and cool relationship. And this mission is a risky business which will send Damien spiraling downward and over the edge… INTERVIEW OF PASCAL BONITZER Like your other heroes (a philosophy professor, a critic, an editor), Damien is an intellectual. Why do you favor that kind of character? I know, that is seriously frowned upon. What can I tell you? I am who I am and my movies are also just a tiny bit about myself, though they’re not autobiographical. It’s not that I think I’m so interesting, but it is a way of obtaining a certain sincerity or authenticity, a certain psychological truth. Why do you make comedies? Comedy is the tone that comes naturally to me, that’s all. -

Amsterdam: Amsterdam University Press, 2020. 316 pp. Notes, bibliography, and index. €109.00 (hb). ISBN 978-94-6372-220-9; €108.99 (eb). ISBN 978-90-4854-306-9. Review by Claudia Pummer, University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa. Originally published in French in 2009, Benoît Turquety’s Danièle Huillet, Jean-Marie Straub: “Objectivists” in Cinema is now available to English readers in an elegant and lucid translation by Ted Fendt. The timing for this book, which is part of Amsterdam University Press’ acclaimed “Film Culture in Translation” series, is spot-on considering that an increasing number of films from the duo’s oeuvre (1962-2006) have recently become available, newly digitized and with English subtitles, through the initiative of the independent distributor and streaming service Grasshopper Film. The renewed interest in Straub and Huillet’s work in recent years has led to several book-length publications, among them a volume edited by Fendt and a comprehensive collection of Straub and Huillet’s writings, translated by Sally Shafto.[1] The English translation of Turquety’s book complements the latter with a more academic approach to the subject, which is long overdue after a good twenty-year-long hiatus of monographic scholarship on Straub and Huillet’s films.[2] Turquety revisits some of the theoretical frameworks that already dominated previous scholarship on the duo’s films and practice, from German critical theory to postwar French film criticism and philosophy from writings by Walter Benjamin, Bertolt Brecht, and Theodor Adorno to Serge Daney, Jean Narboni, Jacques Rivette, and Gilles Deleuze. -
