2009 VMI NOTES

2009 Season - Game 2 VMI Keydets (0-1) vs. (0-0) Feb. 14, Noon West Point, N.Y. Michie Stadium

Game Preview

The 2009 VMI lacrosse team plays its second game of the season Saturday, as the Keydets travel to West Point, N.Y.to take on the Army Black Knights at noon.

VMI comes off an impressive performance in the 2009 opener, a game in which they led the nation’s 11th-ranked team, Navy, after one period and went to the locker room tied at 5. Unfortunately for the Keydets, the second half did not go nearly as well, as the Midship- men outscored VMI 8-0 in the final 30 minutes to win 13-5.

The visitors were led by Stephen Robarge, who went 9-for-12 on face-offs in the opening half of play. On the day, the freshman had a game-high 10 groundballs and also scored his first collegiate goal. Also getting on the scoreboard were Jacob Weimer, who had a pair of goals, Lowell Patterson and Brett Leonard. Leading returning scorer Tim Moran, who was voted first-team All-MAAC in the presea- son poll released this week, was held to just an assist on Weimer’s second goal.

Army is playing its 2009 opener today, a game marked as its first since the graduation of 2008 third-team All-American goalkeeper Adam Fullerton. Fullerton was also the Goalkeeper of the Year in both 2007 and 2008. Sophomore Tom Palesky, who was Fullerton’s backup last year, is the odds-on favorite to inherit the starting position.

In addition to Fullerton, Army lost 13 other seniors to graduation, including a pair of All-Patriot League defenseman. The Black Knights finished sixth in the country in scoring defense last year (7.13 GPG), and will be looking to young players to help get them back to that level.

Saturday’s opener is the earliest in the 92-year history of Army lacrosse, and after it is over, the Black Knights will have quite a chal- lenge. They will travel to to face the defending national champion Orange next weekend. Army’s schedule also in- cludes national semifinalist Duke, as well as Navy.

Last season, these two teams met in West Point, with Army winning 16-3. Fullerton faced just 19 VMI shots that day, making five saves, while Tim Moran had all three of VMI’s goals in defeat.

Navy Uses Strong Second Half to Best Keydets, 13-5

Despite a very impressive showing early, including a two-goal first period advantage, the VMI lacrosse dropped its 2009 opener to the #11 , 13-5 in a contest played Saturday at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium in Annapolis, Md.

VMI came out strong early, scoring four of the game’s first six goals, and enjoying an early 4-2 lead. In the end, Navy’s offense was just too much, as the Midshipmen fired 30 shots at Keydet keeper Sean McCoy in the second half alone, leading to a 8-0 run to conclude the game and seal the Navy victory.

With the win, Navy moves to 1-0, while VMI drops to 0-1 with the setback. The game was one of the three scheduled to begin at noon, the earliest scheduled start to an NCAA lacrosse season in history.

Captains Selected - McCoy, Moran and Carlton

The VMI lacrosse program announced its team captains for the 2009 season on Wednesday, Oct. 1. Tim Moran, Sean McCoy and Will Carlton have been selected to each fill the role.

“We as a coaching staff believe that these players exemplify the spirit of VMI lacrosse, and will do an excellent job in their new role as team tri-captains,” said VMI Jeff Shirk.

Moran, a junior midfielder, was second on the team in scoring during the 2008 campaign. The Florence, N.J. native notched 25 goals, including three game-winners and seven man-up goals, a total that helped him earn All-Confer- ence first-team honors. Moran also dished out 18 assists in helping the Keydets reach the MAAC Tournament Champi- onship Game, after which he was named to the All-Tournament team.

McCoy, a junior goalie from Hudson, Ohio, started every game last season for VMI. In fact, the Buckeye state native played nearly every minute of action during 2008, sitting for just seven minutes, 38 seconds all year. He posted a 47% save percentage, and was named to the MAAC All-Academic team following the campaign.

Finally, Carlton was the lone non-senior on VMI’s starting defense last season. The Winston-Salem, N.C. native started all 16 games for the Keydets and grabbed 36 ground balls during the 2008 season. He, along with McCoy and several other Keydets, was named to the MAAC All-Academic team.

Youth is Served at VMI

This year’s VMI squad is perhaps the youngest in program history, as the Keydets have 19 freshmen currently on ros- ter. Those freshman include goalie Kelly McMinn, a high school All-American and the son of Will McMinn, a member of the Orange County chapter of the US Lacrosse Hall of Fame. McMinn is not expected to see a great deal of time this season, but others in his class are, including Kyle Hofstetter, Jimmy Luckino, Stephen Robarge and others. Both Hof- stetter and Luckino could see time in the starting lineup this season, while Robarge is currently No. 1 on the depth chart in the face-off X and is coming off an outstanding debut game, with 10 groundballs and his first collegiate goal Feb. 7 versus Navy.

Returning Honoree

For only the second time in program history, VMI returns an all-MAAC member, as Tim Moran leads the offensive charge this season. Moran’s season (chronicled above) led to first-team All-MAAC honors, in addition to an All-Tourna- ment team honor following the MAAC postseason. VMI has had five other All-MAAC honorees, two on the first team (Kevin Hill last season, Leo McInerney in 2005) and three on the second squad (McInerney and Brian Ward in 2003, Hill in 2007), but only Hill in 2007 returned the following season. 2009 VMI Lacrosse Notes 2009 VMI KEYDETS

VMI lacrosse announced the hiring of Maryland alum Ryne Adolph to the position of volunteer assistant coach on Nov. 20, 2008.

“We couldn’t be more excited to have Ryne join the VMI lacrosse family,” offered VMI head coach Jeff Shirk regard- ing his program’s new hire, who will work primarily with the defensive side of the Keydet squad. “He is a hardworking, intense individual who brings with him a wealth of knowl- edge and experience on the defensive side of the ball. Adolph is a 2008 graduate of Maryland, the alma mater of VMI head man Shirk and top assistant Chris Feifs. The newest Keydet assistant served as a team captain for the Terrapins this past season, as he played in all 16 games for Maryland, starting 14 of those contests as Maryland ad- vanced to the NCAA quarterfinals, where the Terrapins lost an 8-7 heartbreaker to then second-ranked Virginia. During his time at Maryland, Adolph was a four-year defensive player, and also saw time as a long-stick midfielder. 2009 VMI Lacrosse Notes Will Key Players Sean Carlton McCoy
