The Lady Hornets have surrendered less than 58 points-per-game in each of the last seven years. During the 2004-05 season, Delaware State was No. 1 in the nation in scoring defense at 49.6 points-per-game, an all-time Division I record (since broken). It marked the first time that a Division I team allowed less than 50 points-per-game in a season. CREATING HAVOC The Lady Hornets also ranked among the nation’s leaders in turnover margin and steals last season. DSU was tops in the MEAC, and sixth among all NCAA Division I schools in turnover margin at +5.9 per-game. DSU forced a league-high 24.8 turnovers-per-game, while commit- ting 19.0 per-game itself. The Lady Hornets forced a season-high 40 turnovers in their Jan. 24, 2009 win over Bethune-Cookman. Delaware State forced at least 20 turnovers against all but one opponent last season. Navy committed 19 turnovers in its 55-45 win over DSU on Nov. 30, 2008, the low for a Delaware State opponent during the 2008-09 campaign. The Lady Hornets committed less than 20 turnovers in 17 games last season. DSU was eighth among Division I schools in steals at 12.0 per-game a year ago. Eleven players recorded at least 10 takeaways last season. The Lady Hornets had no less than eight steals in each of their 2008-09 games. Delaware State had a season-high 21 steals in its Dec. 21, 2008 loss to Georgia State and 20 in the Jan. 10, 2009 win over South Carolina State.

MEAC SUCCESS Since Ed Davis became Delaware State’s head coach in 2000, the Lady Hornets have posted a 108-50 record in MEAC regular season games (.690). DSU is 62-14 in MEAC home games (.820) and 46-35 in league road contests (.570) in the Davis era. The Lady Hornets cap- tured their first MEAC title during the 2006-07 season, and shared the regular season crown during the 2003-04 campaign. Delaware State has appeared in five MEAC Tournament championship games during Davis’ tenure.

WINNING WAYS The 2009-10 Lady Hornets are looking to extend the school’s record for consecutive non-losing seasons to eight. DSU was 15-15 last season, snapping a string of six straight winning seasons, a record for the team. The Lady Hornets have gone seven seasons since posting a losing record. Before the current streak, DSU had just two winning seasons in the previous 12. Delaware State consecutive non-losing seasons: Yr. 2009-10 Lady Hornets Basketball Notes

MEDICAL REPORT The Lady Hornets are without the services of two post players due to injuries. Forward Ashley Thompson (sr. 6-1) and center Ucheci Ahaiwe (fr. 6-3) are out indefinitely due to knee injuries. Thompson went down after just six minutes of playing time in the season-opening win over Lincoln. She was the lone returning starter from last season, when she averaged 4.1 points and 3.6 rebounds per-game. Thompson was also tied for second on the Lady Hornets with 23 blocks last season. The LaPlata, Md., native has appeared in 87 games, including 32 as a starter at DSU. Ahaiwe has been unable to practice or play since suffering the injury during preseason camp. Delaware State dressed just eight play- ers for the contest. The Hornets were down to seven when junior Ferderica Holloman fell to the floor while battling for a rebound in the first half. She did not see action the rest of the game.

GOOD SIGN AT THE LINE Delaware State’s goal of better free throw shooting this season is off to a promising start. The Lady Hornets were 14-for-18 at the stripe (77.8%) in the season-opening win over Lincoln last Friday. Last season, DSU was a 63.9% free throw shooting team. In the Lincoln contest, Cortney Crockett led the way by hitting each of her five attempts from the line, while Jamarra Robinson and Alexis Abraham were each 2-for- 2.

HOME COOKING Memorial Hall has not been very friendly to Delaware State opponents during the Ed Davis era. Last Friday’s win over Lincoln was Davis’ 80th at home compared to 23 losses since the 2000-01 season (.780). DSU completed its 2008-09 home schedule with an 11-1 record. Davis is 14-7 in Memorial Hall vs. non-MEAC opponents. Delaware State is riding a 14-game home winning streak vs. MEAC opponents. Davis led the Lady Hornets to a school-record 23-game home win streak from 2003-05, that included a victory over Big East member West Virginia.

LADY HORNETS TO APPEAR ON ESPNU Delaware State will once again be in the national spotlight, thanks to the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) television agreement with ESPNU. The Lady Hornets’ Jan. 25, 2010 contest at Coppin State in Baltimore will be televised by the network as part of a doubleheader between the schools. The DSU/CSU women’s game will be followed by the men’s contest, which will also be televised by ESPNU. It will be tough to match the excitement of the Lady Hornets’ last ESPNU appearance. Delaware State overcame an 18-point second half deficit to defeat first- place North Carolina A&T in DSU’s Memorial Hall on Feb. 18, 2009. 2009-10 Lady Hornets Basketball Notes

LADY HORNETS TO FACE AMERICA’S FINEST The Navy contest is Delaware State’s second straight contest against a U.S. service academy. The Lady Hornets fell to Army last Saturday. This marks the first year that Delaware State has faced Army and Navy in the same year. The Lady Hornets are 1-1 all-time vs. Army. This year’s meeting will be DSU’s eighth vs. Navy. The teams will be meeting for the second straight year. The Midship- men won last year’s contest 55-45 in Annapolis, Md., to a two-game Delaware State win streak in the series.

CALIFORNIA HERE WE COME A visit to Los Angeles for the University of Southern California’s Women of Troy Classic also highlights the 2009-10 Delaware State schedule. The four-team tournament also features Dartmouth and California-Bakersfield. Southern California, which posted a 17-15 record last season, hired former Los Angeles Lakers star and WNBA head coach Michael Cooper to run the team this year. California-Bakersfield was 19-10 in its second season as a Division I program, while Dartmouth was 18-11 and claimed the Ivy League championship and a NCAA Tournament berth last season. This will be the Lady Hornets’ second trip to California. The team visited Fresno State during the 2001-02 season. “I’m excited about the opportunity to take the team to Southern California,” Davis said. “The trip, however, will be no vacation as the tourna- ment features a very strong field.”

DELAWARE STATE IN THE PINK ZONE Delaware State will again join hundreds of teams throughout the country in the fight against breast cancer. This season’s WBCA Pink Zone Contest is set for Feb. 15, 2010 vs. Morgan State in Memorial Hall. The Women’s Basketball Coaches Association began the WBCA Pink Zone®, formerly known as "Think Pink", in 2007 as an initiative to raise breast cancer awareness in women's basketball, on campuses and in commu- nities. The late Kay Yow, former North Carolina State University head women's basketball coach, served as the catalyst for the initiative after her third reoccurrence of breast cancer in 2006. In 2007, more than 120 schools unified for this effort and helped make the inaugural year a success. In 2008, over 1,200 teams and organizations participated, reaching over 830,000 fans and raising over $930,000 for breast cancer awareness and research. The 2009 campaign raised over $1.3 million, reached over 912,000 fans, unified more than 1,600 participating teams and organizations, and saw 56+ schools break attendance records at their event. The WBCA's charity of choice is the Kay Yow/WBCA Cancer Fund®, in partnership with The V Foundation. The WBCA strongly encourages all donations from Pink Zone games to be given to this Fund. The Lady Hornets, donning pink uniforms for the first time, overcame a 16-point second half deficit to defeat MEAC first place North Carolina A&T 68-66 before a national TV audience (ESPNU) in their 2009 Pink Zone contest.

LADY HORNETS IN THE COMMUNITY The Delaware State women’s basketball team has been a winner off the court this year. The Lady Hornets traded for hammers, drills and work gloves to provide much needed help to some Dover area families this fall. The team took part in the First State Resource Con- servation and Development Council’s Emergency Home Repair Project. In all, the Lady Hornets contributed more than 180 volunteer hours assisting with repairs on the homes of area low-income families. In addition, the Lady Hornets joined hundreds of local residents for 2009 Delaware AIDs Walk through the streets of Dover on October 10.
