E-mail: [email protected] Abstract. Regular tidal flow, estuarine circulation and other allied hydrographical parameters in the Cochin Estuary has changed due to regular closure and opening of Thanneermukkom bund and entry of saline water in to the estuary. Temperature, salinity and bottom sediment texture are found to be the important factors significant for the growth and survival of bivalves. The environmental condition on different parts of the estuary especially at station II (south of bund), station IV (north of bund) and station V (near to bar mouth) showed a clear and distinct variation in all the hydrographical parameters due to the existence of Thanneermukkom bund and bar mouth. At stations II the frequency of temperature fluctuation was high and the dominant environment was freshwater when compared with station IV. Sediment texture at station II was sandy silt and at station IV was silty sand. At station V the dominant condition was saline and sediment texture was clayey in nature. A higher salinity was noted throughout the study period at station V. At station II the annual average growth was 8.48 mm; at station IV it was 15.15 mm and at station V it was 9.64 mm. -

Report on Visit to Vembanad Kol, Kerala, a Wetland Included Under
Report on Visit to Vembanad Kol, Kerala, a wetland included under the National Wetland Conservation and Management Programme of the Ministry of Environment and Forests. 1. Context To enable Half Yearly Performance Review of the programmes of the Ministry of Environment & Forests, the Planning Commission, Government of India, on 13th June 2008 constituted an Expert Team (Appendix-1) to visit three wetlands viz. Wular Lake in J&K, Chilika Lake in Orissa and Vembanad Kol in Kerala, for assessing the status of implementation of the National Wetland Conservation and Management Programme (NWCMP). 2. Visit itinerary The Team comprising Dr.(Mrs.) Indrani Chandrasekharan, Advisor(E&F), Planning Commission, Dr. T. Balasubramanian, Director, CAS in Marine Biology, Annamalai University and Dr. V. Sampath, Ex-Advisor, MoES and UNDP Sr. National Consultant, visited Vembanad lake and held discussions at the Vembanad Lake and Alleppey on 30 June and 1st July 2008. Details of presentations and discussions held on 1st July 2008 are at Appendix-2. 3. The Vembanad Lake Kerala has a continuous chain of lagoons or backwaters along its coastal region. These water bodies are fed by rivers and drain into the Lakshadweep Sea through small openings in the sandbars called ‘azhi’, if permanent or ‘pozhi’, if temporary. The Vembanad wetland system and its associated drainage basins lie in the humid tropical region between 09˚00’ -10˚40’N and 76˚00’-77˚30’E. It is unique in terms of physiography, geology, climate, hydrology, land use and flora and fauna. The rivers are generally short, steep, fast flowing and monsoon fed. -

The present study used the FVCOM hydrodynamic model coupled with a Lagrangian particle module (passive) to estimate the residence time and to delineate site‐specific transport pathways in the CE. Moreover, understanding the back and forth movements and residence time of particles was elucidated using metrics such as path length, net displacement, tortuosity and time to flushed out from the system. Spatio‐temporal patterns of the particle distribution in the CE showed a similar trend during monsoon and post‐monsoon with an average residence time of 25 and 30 days respectively. During the low river discharge period(pre‐monsoon),flood‐ebb velocities resulteda minimum net transport of the water andlonger residence time of 90 days compared to that of high discharge period (monsoon). This is an application for the grant of fresh regular permit in respect of KL-07-AX-5357 / suitable vehicle in place of KL-17-C-79 on the route Thottappally - Valiyazheeckal via Pallana, Thrikkunnappuzha, Pathiyankara, Arattupuzha, Kallikkadu and Perumpally for 5 years. On perusal of the file the Secretary RTA reported that there is no overlapping. Hence fresh regular permit in respect of KL-07-AX-5357 / suitable vehicle in place of KL-17-C- 79 on the route Thottappally - Valiyazheeckal via Pallana, Thrikkunnappuzha, Pathiyankara, Arattupuzha, Kallikkadu and Perumpally is granted for a period of 5 years subject to settlement of timings. The grantee is directed to produce the current records of KL-07-AX-5357/ suitable vehicle within one month from the date of communication otherwise the sanction will be revoked. Item No. : 02 Heard the learned counsel represented the applicant. This is an application for the grant of fresh regular permit in respect of stage carriage KL-18-H-7189 on the route Valiyazheeckal Temple – Kayamkulam Railway Station via Sivan Temple, Perumpally, ONK Junction KSRTC Junction and Private Bus Stand for 5 years. KSRTC objected the proposal on the basis of different judgments pronounced by Hon’ble Courts in similar cases. The objection was raised in connection with the violation of scheme in the notification No.G.O.(MS)156/67/PW dtd.27.07.1967, which need to be clarified by getting a detailed report on this count from the enquiry officer. -
