AMD introduces a new Radeon Pro WX series to replace FirePro (1.02/2) AMD is set to release three new professional GPUs as it looks to begin sunsetting its FirePro lineup. The company said Monday night at graphics trade show SIGGRAPH that its new Radeon Pro WX 4100, Radeon Pro WX 5100, and Radeon Pro WX 7100 will be based on its latest Polaris architecture and are aimed at professional users. Specs and pricing of the new cards weren’t immediately available, but the images don't indicate that AMD is going for the jugular in terms of performance, unlike arch-rival Nvidia . AMD officials didn’t talk performance, but they did say the Radeon Pro WX 7100 will hit Steam’s VR performance requirements. Perhaps more importantly, said AMD's head of Industry Alliances David Watters, is the way AMD has organized its graphics unit going forward. Watters said competitor Nvidia must contend with its consumer GeForce products competing with its professional Quadro and Tesla lines. The new Radeon Pro WX 5100 will focus on the traditional workstation market. AMD has been organized so that it now operates as a single unit. The Radeon Pro WX is focused on the traditional workstation market. AMD will also maintain its Radeon Pro lineup which bridges the consumer and professional customers. “There’s a million content creators in the world in the world, not all of them can afford a [$6,000 Nvidia Quadro] M6000k,” said Watters. “It’s our job to sell them a Radeon Pro.” Watters said FirePro will continue to be sold and will get support, but AMD will transition to the Radeon Pro and Radeon Pro WX cards for professional users.

FBI probes DNC hack for Russian involvement (1.02/2) The FBI has launched an investigation into the hacking of the Democratic National Committee’s computers, even as more evidence surfaced of possible Russian involvement in the attack. The data breach was first disclosed last month, when hackers published confidential DNC files, including opposition research on Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump. Then on Friday, Wikileaks published over 19,000 emails that were stolen from the DNC, some of which now threaten to damage the campaign of Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton. The FBI confirmed on Monday that it was investigating the attack and said the perpetrators would be "held accountable. " "A compromise of this nature is something we take very seriously," the agency said in a statement. The FBI declined to elaborate, but the outcome of its probe could have huge implications. If Russia is found responsible, it would mean a foreign state had tried to influence the outcome of a U. S. presidential election, said Justin Harvey, chief security officer at Fidelis Cybersecurity. “If a nation-state has crossed this line, and the FBI can show it was Russia, then it will be a watershed moment in cyber security,” he said. Some security investigators had already blamed Russia for the attacks, and that charge has now been echoed by the DNC and by Clinton's campaign manager. “I don’t think it was coincidental that these emails were released on the eve of our convention here,” campaign manager Robby Mook said in an interview with CNN on Sunday, referring to the start of the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia. Trump has espoused foreign policy views that could be favorable to Russia, giving it an incentive to undermine Clinton's candidacy, the thinking goes. “You have Trump out there saying he may leave NATO,” Harvey noted. “Russia has tried for over half a century to dissolve NATO.” Security firm Crowdstrike, which was hired by the DNC to investigate the hack, has blamed the intrusion on two hacking teams with ties to the Russian government. Other firms including Fidelis have agreed with that claim. The cache of emails released by WikiLeaks on Friday adds to the belief that there was state-sponsored involvement. A security alert from Yahoo to a DNC consultant In early May, the emails show, Yahoo alerted a DNC consultant that her email account was likely being targeted by “state-sponsored actors.” The consultant had been in contact with journalists in the Ukraine about Trump’s campaign manager, Paul Manafort, apparently trying to establish an alleged link between Manafort and Russia. There’s still no “smoking gun” to prove Russia’s involvement, Harvey said. Fidelis reached its conclusion based on the malware that was used. The malicious code, including a reused IP address, was found in other attacks believed to have been carried out by the Russian hacking groups. Not everyone agrees with those findings. A lone hacker known as Guccifer 2.0 has tried to take credit for the breach and denies having any ties to Russia. To prove his claims, he leaked some stolen DNC documents last month and said additional files were sent to WikiLeaks for publication. But security experts are skeptical. Some believe Guccifer is part of a Russian-led misinformation campaign to divert blame from the country. Even if it turns out that state-sponsored hackers were not responsible in this case, they'll have learned from the DNC breach, said Yonatan Striem-Amit, CTO at security firm Cybereason. “Nation-state actors are looking at this right now and realizing that they have a very important tool for political influence,” he said. Russian officials have flatly denied any involvement with the DNC breach.

NVIDIA Announces Quadro Pascal Family (1.02/2) If there was one word to describe the launch of NVIDIA’s Pascal generation products, it’s “expedient.” On the consumer side of the business the company has launched 3 different GeForce cards and announced a fourth ( Titan X ), while on the HPC side the company has already launched their Tesla P100 accelerator , with the PCIe version due next quarter. With the company moving so quickly it was only a matter of time until a Quadro update was announced, and now today at SIGGRAPH 2016 the company is doing just that. Being announced today are the two Quadro models that will fill out the high- end of the Quadro family, the P6000 and P5000. As hinted at by the name, these are based on NVIDIA’s latest Pascal generation GPUs., marking the introduction of Pascal to the Quadro family. And like NVIDIA’s consumer counterparts, these new cards should offer significant performance and feature upgrades over their Maxwell 2 based predecessors. We will start, as always, at the top, with the Quadro P6000. As NVIDIA’s impending flagship Quadro card, this is based on the just-announced GP102 GPU. The direct successor to the GM200 used in the Quadro M6000 , the GP102 mixes a larger number of SMs/CUDA cores and higher clockspeeds to significantly boost performance. Paired with P6000 is 24GB of GDDR5X memory, running at a conservative 9Gbps, for a total memory bandwidth of 432GB/sec. This is the same amount of memory as in the 24GB M6000 refresh launched this spring, so there’s no capacity boost at the top of NVIDIA’s lineup. But for customers who didn’t jump on the 24GB – which is likely a lot of them, including most 12GB M6000 owners – then this is a doubling (or more) of memory capacity compared to past Quadro cards. At this time the largest capacity GDDR5X memory chips we know of (8Gb), so this is as large of a capacity that P6000 can be built with at this time. Meanwhile this is so far the first and only Pascal card with GDDR5X to support ECC, with NVIDIA implementing an optional soft-ECC method for the DRAM only, just as was the case on M6000. NVIDIA has also sent over pictures of the card design, and confirmed that the card ships with the Quadro 6000-series standard TDP of 250W. Utilizing the same basic metal shroud and blower design as the M6000 cards, the P6000 should be suitable as drop-in replacement for older M6000 cards. Do note however that like M6000, external power is pulled via a single 8-pin power connector, so technically this card is out of spec (not that this was a problem for M6000). Unfortunately in their zeal to get this announcement out in time for SIGGRAPH - a frequent venue for Quadro announcements – we don’t have specific performance numbers available. NVIDIA has not locked down the GPU clockspeeds, and as a result we don’t just how P6000s clockspeeds and total throughput will compare to M6000’s. It goes without saying that it should be higher, but how much higher remains to be seen. On a quick technical note, as this announcement comes just 4 days after NVIDIA announced the GP102 GPU used on this card, this Quadro announcement does confirm a few more things about GP102. Quadro P6000 ships with 3840 CUDA cores (30 SMs), confirming our earlier suspicions that GP102 was a (or at least) 30 SM part. Meanwhile this also confirms that GP102 can be outfit with 24GB of GDDR5X. Finally, NVIDIA has confirmed that there’s no high-speed FP64 support on GP102, which is why we’re looking at a 1/32 rate for even the top Quadro card. Moving on, let’s talk about Quadro M5000. Based on NVIDIA’s GP104 GPU, this is the smaller, cheaper, lower power sibling to the P6000. This is a fully enabled part with all 2560 CUDA cores (20 SMs) active, so the performance gains versus M5000 should be similar to what we saw with the consumer GeForce GTX 1080. However like its larger counterpart, NVIDIA has not locked in the final clockspeeds, so specific performance numbers aren’t available at this time. Meanwhile on the memory front, P5000 is equipped with 16GB of GDDR5X memory. This is attached to GP104’s 256-bit memory bus, and like P6000 is clocked at 9Gbps. P5000’s predecessor, M5000, maxed out at just 8GB of memory, so along with a 36% increase in memory bandwidth, this doubles the amount of memory available for a Quadro 5000 tier card. Looking at the card design itself, to no surprise it strongly resembles the M5000, with its plastic blower dressed up in Quadro livery. The card’s TDP stands at 180W, which is a slight increase over M5000, but shouldn’t too significantly impact the drop-in replacement nature of the design. Along with the significant performance increase afforded by the Pascal architecture and TSMC’s 16nm FinFET manufacturing process, the other big news here is of course the functionality that comes to the Quadro P- series courtesy of Pascal. While for our regular readers there’s nothing new we haven’t seen already with GeForce, Pascal’s new functionality will apply a bit differently to the Quadro lineup. Perhaps the biggest change here is Pascal’s new display controller. With both the P6000 and P5000 shipping with 4 DisplayPorts, the DisplayPort 1.4 capable controller means that both cards can now support higher resolutions and refresh rates. Whereas the M-series maxed out at 4 4K@60Hz monitors, the P-series can now handle 4 monitors running 5K@60Hz, 4 4K monitors running at 120Hz, or even 8K monitors with additional limitations. Do note however that the per-card monitor limit is still 4 displays, as this is as many displays as Pascal can support. Speaking of multiple displays, alongside the Quadro card announcements NVIDIA is also announcing a new Quadro Sync card, the aptly named Quadro Sync 2. The multi-adapter/multi-display timing synchronization card is being updated to support the Pascal cards, and will support a larger number of adapters as well. The new Sync 2 will support 8 cards in sync, as opposed to 4 on the original Sync card. Coupled with the 4 display per card capability of Pascal, and this means synchronized video walls and other systems can now be built out to 32 displays. NVIDIA will also be heavily promoting Simultaneous Multi-Projection (SMP), the company’s multi-viewport technology. Like the consumer cards, VR is a big driver here, with NVIDIA looking reach out to VR developers. NVIDIA is also pitching this at VR CAVE systems, as they can see similar benefits from SMP’s geometry reprojection. Taking a look at the overall Quadro lineup, the P6000 and P5000 will at least for the time being be sitting alongside the existing M4000 and lower cards. Within the Quadro lineup these cards are meant for the most demanding workloads– massive memory sets and complex rendering/compute tasks – and they will be priced accordingly. Specific pricing has not been announced, but NVIDIA tells us to expect them to be priced similarly to the last generation cards. This would work out to $5000+ for Quadro P6000, and $2000+ for Quadro P5000 at launch. Finally, as we mentioned before NVIDIA was announcing these cards early, before the final clockspeeds have been locked down. This means that while the cards are being announced today, they won’t launch for another two months; NVIDIA expects them to be available in early October. It’s not unusual for Quadro cards to be announced ahead of time, though as SIGGRAPH is also a popular venue for AMD pro card announcements, the earlier than usual announcement may have been for multiple reasons. Along with the announcement of the Quadro P-series, NVIDIA is also using SIGGRAPH to announce updates to various software and ecosystem initiatives within the company. Overall a number of the company’s SDKs are receiving an update in some form, ranging from rendering to video encode and capture, the latter taking advantage of Pascal’s 8K encode/decode capabilities. Of particular note here, NVIDIA’s Iray physically based render plugin for 3D modeling applications is getting a significant update. As with other parts of their ecosystem, NVIDIA is doubling down on VR here as well. The next update to Iray will include support for generating panoramic VR lightfields – think high detail fixed position 3D panoramas – which can then be displayed on other devices. NVIDIA has been showing off an early version of this technology at GTC 2016 and other events, where it was used to show off renders of the company’s under-construction headquarters. The Iray update will also be part of a larger focus on integrating the company’s software with their DGX-1 server, which incorporates 8 Tesla P100 accelerators. Iray will be coming to DGX-1 this fall, supporting the same features that are already available in multi-GPU setups with the older Quadro VCA. Longer term, in 2017, the company will be adding NVLink support for better multi-GPU scaling. NVIDIA’s OptiX ray tracing engine is the other product that’s getting a DGX- 1 update. OptiX 4.0, which is being released this week, adds support for the DGX-1, including NVLink support. It is interesting to note though that the company is only supporting clusters of 4 GPUs, despite the fact that DXG-1 has 8 GPUs (the other 4 GPUs form a second cluster). This may mean that OptiX needs direct GPU links to perform best – as in an 8-way configuration, some GPUs are 2 hops away – or it may just be that OptiX naturally doesn’t scale well beyond 4 GPUs. Finally, NVIDIA is also announcing a change to how mental ray support is handled for Maya. Previous, integrating the ray with Maya was handled by Autodesk, but NVIDIA is currently in the process of taking that over. The goal of doing so is to allow mental ray to be updated and have features added at the more brisk pace that NVIDIA tends to work at. The new plugin is currently scheduled to ship in September, and as one of their first actions, NVIDIA will be integrating a new global illumination engine, GI- Next.

Here are the key security features coming to Windows 10 next week (1.02/2) While there's a lot of talk about Windows 10's new features for consumers, the forthcoming Anniversary Update also adds a pair of advanced security capabilities aimed at helping IT managers better lock down the computers in their organization. Windows Information Protection aims to make it possible for organizations to compartmentalize business and personal data on the same device. It comes alongside the general release of Windows Defender Advanced Threat Protection , a system that uses machine learning and Microsoft's cloud to better protect businesses after their security has been breached. The two features are part of Microsoft's push to position Windows 10 as an operating system for security- conscious companies at a time when attacks against businesses seem to be more prevalent than ever. That could be a major selling point at a time when Microsoft is working hard to try and drive companies to deploy the new OS. Using Windows Information Protection, companies can encrypt their data on employee devices using keys that are controlled by IT. Doing so is supposed to bring several benefits, including the ability to selectively wipe only company data from a personal device when an employee leaves the company. Companies can also set policies about which applications can be used to handle business data, so users can't live-tweet the content of a company's HR system, for example. The whole system is designed to bring Windows 10 in line with the reality that many employees use their mobile devices for both personal and business use. For businesses to use Windows Information Protection, they'll need a Windows 10 Enterprise E3 subscription, which costs $7 per user per month. While Windows Information Protection is designed to help proactively guard company data, Windows Defender Advanced Threat Protection is supposed to help companies detect and contain security breaches. It uses a combination of software running on client devices and a Microsoft cloud service to alert companies when it looks like their systems have been hacked. Once the system has detected a breach, it suggests steps that IT managers can take to solve the problem. That's important, according to Rob Lefferts, director of program management for Windows Enterprise and Security. Attackers will often try to place multiple back doors in a company's systems once they've broken in, and failing to get them out will cause problems. Windows Defender ATP requires a company be subscribed to the more expensive Windows 10 Enterprise E5 service, which is meant for companies looking for premium Windows 10 add-on features. Microsoft won't disclose the pricing publicly, but said its companies can find out more by asking one of its partners. It will be interesting to see how these features affect the rate at which businesses adopt Windows 10 -- if at all. Microsoft is betting big on security's enterprise appeal to try and get businesses to upgrade, but these advanced capabilities require both an investment of time and money in order to get off the ground.

Nvidia's Quadro P6000 GPU blasts out 12 teraflops of performance (1.02/2) The P6000 is aimed at the type of powerful workstations used for tasks like editing HD video and applying special effects, as well as the CAD/CAM applications used by engineers. Workstations generally have more powerful components and more memory capacity than regular desktop PCs. The new GPU was announced Monday at SIGGRAPH , a computer graphics trade show in Anaheim, California. Details about pricing and availability weren't immediately available. It has four DisplayPort 1.4 slots, supporting resolutions up to 4K at 120Hz and 5K at 60Hz. The GPU has internal pipelines to render faster 3D video. The new Quadro is significantly faster than its predecessor, Nvidia said in a blog post , though it didn't provide side by side performance figures. The current top-end Quadro is the M6000, which is based on the Maxwell architecture, and delivers peak single-precision performance of 7 teraflops. The M6000 uses GDDR5 memory and has lower memory bandwidth. Nvidia also announced the Quadro P5000, which delivers 8.9 teraflops of peak performance. 8 Starting from Batman, all Telltale games will support multiplayer It's common to attract spectators while playing Telltale's narrative-driven adventures, and naturally enough, those spectators like to call the shots as well. So it'd be cool if multiple players could vote on the game's decisions and dialogue trees too, right? That's apparently what is going to happen in all Telltale Games from now on, starting with the forthcoming Batman adaptation , a studio spokesperson said at Comic-Con in San Diego yesterday. As reported by Shack News , Batman will debut a new Crowd Play function boasting two modes. The first allows the whole room, or crowd, to make decisions based on a majority vote, while the second allows the main player to have ultimate ruling on any decisions. When opted into, Crowd Play will generate a URL which can be accessed by all participating players on smart devices and PCs. Apparently more than 2,000 people can vote on a single game, which would make for an interesting cinema experience, and an even more interesting streaming experience. Batman: A Telltale Series premieres on August 2. Here's Sam Roberts' early impressions.

The end of the world is more fun when Rambo, Elvis, and Garfield are your wingmen I’ve enjoyed getting my ass kicked by Death Road to Canada , an action-roguelike that released last Friday inspired by The Oregon Trail. In Death Road, you’re driving north to escape the zombie- filled USA. Along the way you encounter new survivors who learn new skills, consume resources, and die—the characters you end the game with are often totally different ones than your starters. Death Road is hard. After probably 15 runs, I’ve only made it to the Canadian border twice, and I’ve died both times. Along the way I’ve been killed by a harmless bee , had my car keys stolen by a gator, lit myself on fire with a molotov, and totaled countless cars in my quest to reach the land of hockey. What’s keeping me coming back for more punishment? Death Road’s ridiculous celebrity cameos. By default, Death Road randomizes the stats and appearance of the survivors you encounter on the road. Mixed into that random roster, though, are handmade celebrity knockoffs. So far I've run into Lunk (Link), Rambeux (Rambo), a medieval knight, an E. Honda lookalike, and a few others. These celebrity survivors are rare by default, but you can choose to make them appear more frequently, which you should do because it makes Death Road feel like an insane fan fiction road trip through armageddon. Each cameo is an exciting deus ex machina, like encountering the Mysterious Stranger in Fallout. You’re rolling down the freeway in an Oscar Mayer Wienermobile, and you stumble on someone who looks an awful lot like a hitchhiking Jason Voorhees. Do you take him in? Although Death Road is usually silly, the game does expose you to some moments of seriousness and mortality, and these rare encounters with recognizable characters are the perfect counterweight to the game’s difficulty. All of the special characters have a unique weapon, mechanic, event, or gimmick: ‘Alvis,’ a stand-in for Elvis, is an absolute brawler who croons as he bashes enemies with his bare hands. If you keep him alive, Lunk finds treasure chests that upgrade his weapons. Anime Girl, I'm told by developer Kepa Auwae , "gets steadily more 'kawaii' as time goes on until her head gets huge and mutated. Then she explodes, which can be good or bad depending on if she's surrounded by zombies anyway or she's in your car. " But these characters aren’t superheroes: they bleed, they still need to eat, and they can be temperamental. One run, Lunk yelled “KYAAAAA!” in the car and lowered the morale of another survivor. That was nothing. Later, Lunk—maybe because he had low morale, I have no clue—did Link’s patented spin attack in the vehicle and killed two wounded characters. Thanks, buddy. And there are companions who are outright detrimental, which I love. Not long after I accepted Garfield (a person dressed in a Garfield costume, more accurately) into my group, the scary cat mascot teleported everyone to a hell realm littered with bones, and the hardest zombie siege I’d seen in 10 hours of play. Garfield did this twice. I survived only because I had Lunk in my party to chew through 150 zombies. At the next opportunity I led Garfield into a swarm of undead and watched him get devoured. One of Death Road’s creators tells me that there are about 33 recruitable special characters, and that more, like Sheriff ‘ Nick Rhymes ,’ are in production. “A lot of the design of Death Road is around this surreal setting with tons of rare events, such as finding unique characters,” says Auwae. “We want to keep surprising people, even if they play the game over and over.” Auwae also says that some playthroughs can trigger ultra-rare interactions with characters and other events. “We did a streamer event with wouldyoukindly.com and one of the streamers, Pixelmonkey, got a really weird special character that I didn't know existed. He got the Contender, who is a really tough boxer. Then he had a teleporter accident with her, and she got spliced into a dog. Everyone else in his party died after, and he kept feeding her skill bonuses. So he ended up with this weird half-human half-dog Dogtaur with boxing gloves and massive amounts of health. He almost beat the game solo with this character. It was such a tiny chance of happening that I didn't even know it was possible, just rare happenstance.”

Skills shortage and poor IT infrastructure hinder tech adoption by Asean governments Sub-standard hardware, staff shortages and poor data- sharing are impeding the adoption of cutting-edge technology by the governments of Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore and Thailand, according to a report by the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU). The Microsoft-sponsored report, High aspirations, stark realities: Digitising government in South-East Asia , is based on a survey of 300 IT leaders and interviews with experts in industry, government, academia and the civic sector. Respondents said their priority is better use of data, including cloud access. More than one-third (37%) named cloud computing as the most important tech trend, and there were also high hopes for the internet of things (IoT). As regards barriers to greater utilisation of technology, top of the list is lack of skills, according to 46% of survey respondents in government, whereas 44% of those working in the technology sector said the main barrier is organisational ICT infrastructure. In view of high-profile cyber attacks around the world, a surprising finding was that only (16%) of south-east Asian governments consider cyber security a barrier to public-sector technology adoption. The research showed that private clouds that isolate sensitive information from public clouds have reduced security concerns. “Organisational challenges have overtaken security concerns [as barriers] for governments in south-east Asia as they seek to deliver more and more services digitally,” said Charles Ross, editor of the report . “Governments in the region have an opportunity to stand at the forefront of smart-government development, but only if it addresses real challenges related to employee and citizen ICT skills, and insufficient infrastructure.” Asean governments’ sub-optimal investment in infrastructure and training of staff, and their inability to attract better staff when competing on salaries could be because many governments are underfunded compared with the local private sector, said Jim Longwood, research VP at Gartner . A Gartner survey found that 10% of CIOs in south-east Asia believe the scarcity of talent is reaching crisis proportions, and 48% feel they are suffering from talent shortages. Longwood noted that in the more emerging south-east Asian countries, global and Indian service providers are setting up offshore delivery centres, increasing competition for experienced resources in countries such as Malaysia and the Philippines. By contrast, Singapore’s success as a regional hub for global company headquarters has increased competition for better IT resources, resulting in increasing take-up of nearshore outsourcing to Malaysia and offshore to India. The EIU study also reveals gaps in perception. Just 20% of Singaporean respondents believe the government is “very effective” at implementing new technologies. This contrasts with 57% of Indonesian respondents and 33% overall. Singaporeans who are long used to easily accessible internet connectivity and robust services are likely to have far higher expectations of their government than users in less developed markets where connectivity is less accessible. The respondents’ priorities – better data use, IoT and cloud computing – echo the focus of CIOs in the Asean region. Gartner’s 2016 CIO study found that Asean CIOs are focused on investing in business intelligence/analytics, cloud, mobility, infrastructure and datacentres as well as digitisation, with legacy migration a low priority. “Factors such as improving operational efficiencies via better infrastructure operations and use of digital channels, along with reducing costs, were common drivers for these priorities in south-east Asia as well as globally,” said Longwood.

Quake Champions video explains character abilities As Tim Willits explains in the video embedded below, each champion will have a unique active ability. The Ranger has a Dire Orb, which is a devastating projectile plasma orb which can, y'know, kill lots of things, while Visor has a Piercing Eye ability, which can reveal the locations of all opponents on the map. Meanwhile, Nix is fast, light and capable of phasing in and out of sight (kinda like Tracer in Overwatch) while Scalebeard has a Bullrush ability which looks capable of one-shotting anything it hits. Check out the video below. Quake Champions has no release window yet, but it's coming exclusively to PC.

Ten minutes of Dual Universe gameplay revealed in new video Dual Universe was announced in May as a single-shard sci-fi MMO with a focus on “emergent collective gameplay based around exploration, mining, crafting, trade, politics and warfare.” A trailer released in June for E3 offered a brief look at how that expansive, rather vague description might work out in terms of actual gameplay, and last week developer Novaquark released a longer video that's admittedly less dramatic, but also more specific about what the studio has in mind. The trailer actually features the ship that appeared in the E3 teaser, and while the sweet soundtrack is gone, the sense of scale and the capabilities of the technology are much more obvious. It's a long way from a functioning game, but I can see the basic structure here of something I might want to play, especially—and this is the hook—if the developers can deliver on the promise of making this whole, wide-open, fully-moddable experience shareable among millions of players simultaneously. Dual Universe is slated to enter alpha testing some time in 2017. For now, you can find out more at dualthegame.com . Thanks, PCGamesN .

How to watch the Democratic National Convention While Donald Trump fought off rebellious delegates to claim the presidential nomination at the Republican National Convention , no such battle awaits Hillary Clinton at the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia. It's here she will officially become the first female presidential nominee in US history, with little to no contest. The Democratic Convention dates run Monday, July 25 through Thursday, July 28. Hillary Clinton, Democratic party leaders and everyday Americans will take the stage to discuss youth education, gun violence and mass shootings, and opportunities for the poor, disabled and undocumented. Barack and Michelle Obama, Bill and Chelsea Clinton, Joe Biden and Bernie Sanders headline the event. Vice presidential candidate Tim Kaine will also speak. If you tuned in to Trump's convention for its eclectic mix of actors, sports stars and business moguls, the DNC could also draw your interest with its star-studded speaker list. Time reports that Lady Gaga, Fergie, Snoop Dogg, Idina Menzel and Cyndi Lauper will all perform at or near the convention hall during the week, and actresses like Lena Dunham, America Ferrera, Debra Messing and Chloe Grace Moretz will speak at or attend the convention as well. There was plenty of drama before the DNC, as the head of the Democratic National Committee stepped down amid a WikiLeaks email scandal. The revelations of the email dump have led to vocal protests, and should make for an interesting week, to say the least. Whether you plan to watch to celebrate Clinton's victory, compare and contrast with the Republican Convention, or just tune in to be a part of it all, you'll find all the TV, online and app options to watch the DNC you need right here. Clinton and DNC organizers plan on pushing "the most progressive platform in party history" at the convention, and hope their speaker list will inspire voters to support their positions over Trump's. The official Democratic Convention speaker list isn't available yet on the official site , but press releases have announced a wide range of everyday Americans with inspiring or troubling stories to tell, including DREAM activist Astrid Silva and Mothers of the Movement, a group whose members have all lost children as a result of gun violence or police brutality. Monday's theme is "United Together". Michelle Obama, Sanders, Elizabeth Warren, and Silva headline the day, while other speakers include undocumented immigrants living in fear of deportation and survivors of drug abuse and developmental disabilities. (Expected start time: 3pm ET) Tuesday's theme is "A Lifetime of Fighting for Children and Families," and will primarily feature Bill Clinton and the Mothers of the Movement. The mothers of Eric Garner, Trayvon Martin, Dontré Hamilton, Jordan Davis, Michael Brown, Hadiya Pendleton, and Sandra Bland will touch on issues of race and gun violence. (Expected start time: 4pm ET) "Working Together" is Day 3's topic, highlighted by President Obama and Vice President Biden, who will encourage voters to stay the course with Clinton. Other speakers include the still-unknown pick for Clinton's VP, Moretz and survivors of the Sandy Hook and Charleston church shootings. (Expected start time: 4:30pm ET) Image Credit: Democratic National Convention Committee Finally, the convention wraps up Thursday with the message, "Stronger Together". Chelsea Clinton, along with advocates for increasing the minimum wage and reducing the gender wage gap, will take the stage before Hillary Clinton speaks and accepts the nomination. (Expected start time: 4:30pm ET) We'll update this post as the official list becomes available. Other speakers with undetermined slots include Kaine, Governors Jerry Brown, Andrew Cuomo and Howard Dean; Senators Barbara Boxer, Al Franken, Kaine and Minority Leader Harry Reid; Congresspersons Nancy Pelosi and Joaquin Castro; and actresses Dunham and Ferrera. Whichever news station or broadcast network you use to get your political fix, that channel will likely be devoting nonstop coverage to the Democratic National Convention before, during, and after the events in Philadelphia. CNN beats out its fellow dedicated news channels in sheer quantity of coverage. Starting Saturday, July 23, CNN will begin 24-hour coverage of the events. Dozens of CNN anchors will be on site as programs like America's Choice 2016, Inside Politics and CNN Tonight air live at the CNN Grill broadcasting headquarters in Philly. Shows will also be livestreamed online and on mobile via CNNgo. Fox News and MSNBC are also offering all-day coverage of the DNC on their TV channels, and PBS NewsHour and NPR have joined forces to cover each night of the convention from 8pm to 11pm ET on both TV and the radio. On the major channel front, both NBC and ABC are dedicating their 10pm ET slots to recapping and discussing the convention from the night before the event through Thursday. ABC's Good Morning America, Nightline, and World News Tonight will also broadcast live from Philadelphia Monday through Thursday. The Democratic Convention will have more streaming options online than ever before. Whether you care more about experts' hot takes, social media updates from allies and rivals, or even seeing the proceedings in VR, we've laid out your best options. YouTube is once again the official livestream provider of the Democratic Convention at https://www.youtube.com/user/DemConvention , where you'll have unfiltered access to the speeches, celebrities and delegates. Google, YouTube's parent company, has upgraded its Search results accordingly: search "Democratic National Convention", and Google will air the livestream in your browser, along with a lineup of speakers, relevant social media posts, and summaries of recent speeches and events. Facebook, meanwhile, is pushing Facebook Live as the best way for users to get unfiltered access to politicians and the media. The company has invited news outlets like CNN, C-SPAN, Fox News, and the New York Times to stream interviews at the Facebook media lounge using Facebook Live. Democrats have already wielded Live and Periscope to stream Congressional protests directly to voters, so expect more on your activity feeds soon. If you plan on live-tweeting the DNC and voicing your support or disagreements, CBS News and Twitter have partnered to make watching and joining the conversation easy. The CBS News stream on Twitter will be "enhanced with live, convention-related tweets", and is a great way to keep up with the event when you're a work. Even Twitch is stepping into the competitive gameplay of American politics; it'll be streaming the convention each night on a dedicated channel with special politically themed emoticons, and you can host the stream on your channel to encourage discussion in your chat. Plus, if you consider yourself particularly savvy in political matters, you can co-stream the event and comment live to your viewers as you watch the proceedings. Twitch has also added a dedicated DNCDiscussion channel where viewers can engage in more in-depth conversation. Finally, if you wish you were physically at the convention but couldn't make the trip, several channels are ready to simulate the experience for you in VR. The official DNC 2016 app has a 360º video of the convention center, and you can also use your Google Cardboard to livestream the DNC in 360º VR. Even CNN plans to air certain segments and delegate activity in virtual reality on the CNN Politics mobile app. For mobile users, the best option is likely the DNC 2016: Official App, which can be found on the Apple Store and Google Play. This dedicated app features a livestream, 360º streaming options, a calendar of day-to-day events, and VODs of previous speeches. But for the cable cutters looking for the most convenient way to watch the convention comfortably on their TVs, there's no shortage of set-top boxes and apps from which to choose. Here's a rundown of the apps on your favorite devices you can use to watch the proceedings. Amazon Fire TV : CBS News, CNNgo, Fox News, DNC 2016: Official App, NBC News, Twitch, YouTube Apple TV : ABC News, CBS News, CNBC, CNNgo, PBS, YouTube Google Chromecast : ABC News, DNC 2016: Official App, Twitch, YouTube PS4 : Twitch, YouTube Roku : ABC News, CBS News, CNBC, CNNgo, Fox News, NBC News, Twitch, YouTube Xbox One : ABC News, CBS News, Twitch, YouTube We'll keep this post updated as more information on the event, schedule and speakers comes in.

Rainbow Six Siege: Operation Skull Rain goes to Brazil for two new operators The next Rainbow Six Siege expansion is called Operation Skull Rain , which is the sort of title I would've considered seriously bad-ass when I was 12. That minor quibble aside, it sounds like it could be fun: This time, following the chill of Black Ice and the grit of Dust Line , Ubisoft is taking its show to the sweltering cities of Brazil. Operation Skull Rain will add a pair of new operators from Brazil's Batalhão de Operações Policiais Especiais, aka BOPE. The defender, Caveira, has a “Silent Step” skill that gives her the ability to sneak up on enemies, immobilize them, and then interrogate them to reveal the locations of teammates. She brings an M12 and a SPAS-15 to the party as her primary weapons, a PRB92 secondary, and Nitro Cell C4 and Barbed Wire as gadgets. Her attacker counterpart, Capitão, packs an M249 LMG and Para-308 as primaries, a PRB92 secondary of his own, and frag, stun, and micro smoke grenades. He also has is a tactical crossbow that fires oxygen-burning “asphyxiating bolts. " Operation Skull Rain will also add a new map set in a Brazilian favela, free for all players, which Ubisoft said will be its “most destructible map to date.” It will make numerous “tweaks and improvements” to the game, add a new angled-grip attachment and “surrender system,: and a new custom game mode called "Tactical Realism. " “By popular request, the Tactical Realism mode prevents players from marking enemies, allowing only the timer, compass, gadget, and weapon panels to be visible in the HUD. Additionally, there are no kill confirmations, and more realistic magazine management will be put into play,” Ubisoft explained. “The idea is to push players to rely even more on their teammates and communication for information on enemy locatios and kill counts.” And here's your daily dose of trivia: BOPE was actually the inspiration and basis for the Unidade de Forças Especiais , aka UFE, the special forces police unit based in Sao Paulo, Brazil that served as one of the antagonist factions in Max Payne 3. Hopefully it can perform better in combat against teams of the best special forces soldiers in the world than it did when confronted with a self-loathing middle-aged man with anger management issues and a pill problem. Operation Skull Rain doesn't have a kickoff date yet, but the two new operators will be available immediately to season pass holders when it goes live, while everyone else will have to wait a week. More information will be revealed on July 30, during the Season Two Xbox Pro League Finals livestream.

Build of the week: Ghost Rider I once bought my brother Ghost Rider, Ghost Rider 2 , and Drive Angry for his birthday. We watched all three in the same evening, and our lives were forever changed. Nicolas Cage’s ‘strong’ performances were an inspiration to us, and so we made our best efforts to mimic his alarming face contortions and yell-spittle quota as a way to more clearly communicate our emotions. It was a bad year. Turns out, Cage-fury is best channeled through inanimate objects, which is why Ghost Rider from Modder Crow out of Thailand is such an exceptional piece of work. It’s a sturdy build, metallurgy and welding at it’s finest, worthy of the Harley-est hogs. And coursing through those chrome veins is an attitude so raw, hotter than where the rubber meets the road, that it can only be expressed in red LED lighting and a skull at the mast. What’s that on the side of the highway? It’s some graphics, and they’re dead. Hog talk aside, it’s an impressive build with specs that do plenty of heavy lifting themselves. If only computers could rev their engines. For more information on and pictures of Ghost Rider, check out the official build log .

Samsung is killing off its line of see-through OLED TVs Samsung has made Transparent OLED displays since 2008. And while they haven't always had the same broad appeal as the company's new flagship SUHD TVs , they were an interesting take on the future of display technology. I say "were" there because, as of today, Samsung is killing off its Transparent OLED Display Panel, which is the base panel used in all TOLED products available on the market. The reasoning provided to TechRadar by an external source was that "the global quantity is not high enough for Samsung to justify the investment [in Transparent OLED]. " In effect, the tech industry may have really liked the idea of transparent TVs, but no one was actually buying one. Samsung closing up shop on Transparent OLED is disappointing, but not completely unexpected. But while Samsung is leaving, LG has plans to break into it next year. The Korean display manufacturer showed off a few concept pieces at CES 2016 , and is expected to return to Las Vegas next year with a commercially available edition of the technology. Whether Samsung's decision to break ties with Transparent OLED will affect LG remains to be seen, but there's at least a small chance that Samsung's departure could kill TOLED before it ever takes off. At least we still have great OLED TVs like the LG OLED55C6P , right? Article continues below

The best GPS trackers for kids GPS trackers for kids are designed to give parents or carers peace of mind about a child's whereabouts. It's not always easy to keep both eyes on active youngsters, and GPS tracking is the next-best way of keeping track of them and ensuring their safety. There are a number of tracking devices available that are designed with children in mind, and they generally take the form of wristband or a clip that can be attached to your child's clothing. The use GPS and other networks to track your child, and most enable you to set up geo-fenced 'safe zones'. Here's a look at eight of the best GPS-based solutions available to preorder or purchase. Tinitell enables you to track where your child is from anywhere in the world. Slot in a 2G SIM card and the Tinitell app shows you their location at all times. The SIM card also enables Tinitell to function as a wearable cell phone – your child can call you via a simple big-button interface on the device. You can set it up with 12 contacts among trusted friends and family, so your child will never feel out of touch if they're lost. The wristband is resistant to dirt and damage, with the large buttons meaning the smallest child can figure out what's going on. Designed to keep your child safe while also giving them some independence, FiLIP is a wearable wristband that works like a limited cellphone, much like Tinitell. Through the device's app, parents can send one-way text messages to their child's FiLIP, and can control who their child can call from the gadget. Especially useful is the ability to create safe zones, with the caregiver receiving a notification if their child leaves certain locations – this could be used to keep an eye on the child's school attendance, or check that they're at the local park where they're supposed to be. An emergency call button enables the child to contact the primary account holder, and FiLIP will record the call, including background noises. FiLIP is only available in the US at present. Easily placed in your child's pocket or backpack, PocketFinder is ideal for kids who don't want to wear a wristband. Parents can view their child's GPS location on Google Maps, using their smartphone, tablet, or PC. The location is updated every two minutes, and as with FiLIP you can set up geo-fenced zones, and be alerted when your child enters or leaves one of these. An emergency alert is activated by hitting the clip against a solid surface three times, with the device being rugged enough to withstand day to day use. Note that in addition to the device cost you have to subscribe to a service plan, which costs $12.95 per month in the US and $29.95 per month elsewhere. Trax Play is a small tracker that can be easily attached to a belt buckle or backpack. Parents can create geo-fenced safe zones to determine which locations children can explore; if they move outside these an alert is issued to the connected app. Each safe zone can be as small or as large as you want, with scheduling enabling you to monitor specific areas on different days. An augmented reality interface makes it simple to locate your child, with a distance indicator popping up on-screen as you pan your phone around an area. While Trax Play doesn't offer any cellphone-style capabilities, it works in 33 countries, including the USA, Canada, UK, much of Europe and Australia, without any additional fees, making it ideal for vacationers.

Thanks to an upcoming update to the wayfinding service, the latest version of Google Maps on iOS, Android and desktop touts an easier-to-read interface and color scheme to make finding your bearings a breeze - shown in the image above on the right, comparative to the old look on the left. On top of trimming extraneous design elements like outlines on roads, the updated Maps uses color coding to easily pick out hospitals, schools, natural features, water, and even places where there's a lot to do if you're looking to find all the hustle and bustle, as seen by the sections of orange in the video below: The updated iOS and Android app also is also adding a small but helpful feature: multiple destination routes. If you've ever found yourself constantly adding new directions on each leg of your trip, commute, or errands, this addition may speak to you just as much as the cleaner interface. In addition to its new look, Google Maps looks to be rolling out a new feature that will trim down data usage. While not confirmed, Maps may also be playing around with a Wi-Fi functionality that allows the app to continue being useful without relying on a cellular connection, TechCrunch reports. Google Maps can still be viewed offline, but crucial features like transit routes or directions become unavailable, requiring travelers to eat a few bytes each time they check on their location. 19 Six years later, Oddworld: Munch's Oddysee is no longer a broken port Oddworld: Munch’s Oddysee first received a PC port way back in 2010, and has since troubled sorry purchasers with a variety of game- breaking bugs—some can’t even get it to start. Fixes were promised right after release, and nearly six years later, they’re finally here. The developers built an entirely new port that's been on the Steam beta branch since February , and after five months it's finally taken over the main branch. An update was pushed to Munch’s Oddysee on July 24th, the specific details of which are vague, but according to a post on the Oddysee Steam news page , include “multiple fixes and some 'HD' assets including higher resolution character models.” The update also includes Steam trading cards if they're your thing. Personally, I'd just sell a few collecting dust in your inventory to scrounge up some change, because to encourage players to give Munch’s Oddysee a shot, it’s on sale for a measly $1.24. Better late than never, eh? I booted up the new build to see if the changes made a difference, and the game started without issue, running at 2560x1440 and a steady framerate. It’s still one to play with a controller if you can, but finally, it seems the suite of Oddworld games are getting the PC treatment they deserve. Of course, I’m a small sample size, so if there are any new problems, we’ll find out soon enough.

Overwatch hero guide: how to master every hero in the game Overwatch just got its first post-launch hero - as well as a major patch balancing several of the colorful cast - changing the feel of the roster we've first come to know from playing Blizzard's team shooter bonanza. In this guide - which we'll update as more characters join the ranks - we look at each character's role, difficulty to learn, essential tips, and what kind of player will make a great match for them. In short: Looking to find your next favorite hero to main for your next match? Don't worry, loves - the calvary's here! The cybernetic ninja Genji takes some serious practice, but can be a never- ending thorn in the enemy team's side in the right hands. Movement is the key for success when playing Genji. His double jump, wall crawl, and Swift Strike allow him to dodge trouble as well as cause some of his own against hard-to-reach snipers or turrets. What your enemies will really come to fear - or just be frustrated at - is Genji's Deflect ability, which can ricochet shots, including Ultimates, right back at them. This is just as much a defensive ability as an offensive one, as you'll need to keep bullets from reaching Genji to keep his low health pool from hitting zero. McCree is a sharpshooter, through and through. His Peacemaker does best when each bullet finds its mark, so avoid multi-foe brawls where there aren't enough shots to go around. While the anachronistic hero is best at medium-to-long-range, McCree is still a threat up close, especially if he lands his Flashbang ability to stun an unsuspecting enemy for a quick headshot or fan-the-hammer kill. In addition to Flashbang, McCree's Combat Roll offers an extra advantage in an up-close battle, dodging attacks and reloading all in one fluid motion. Use these abilities often, as an overwhelmed McCree ends up dead faster than you can say, "it's hiiiigh nooooon. " If you're practiced with a missile launcher from years of Quake or Unreal Tournament, then Pharah is for you. Her Jump Jet also lends the armored hero an aerial advantage, lending for some easy kills on enemies forgetting to look up. Going airborne has its downsides, however. With no cover to fly behind, a flying Pharah makes for an easy skeet shoot for heroes like , McCree, or Bastion, so juggle your time on and off terra firma to keep opponents guessing. Look past Reaper's cartoonish attempt to appear edgy, and you have a very effective Offense character who serves as a perfect counter for some of Overwatch's most difficult matchups. Reaper's Wraith Form and Shadow Step are excellent evasive abilities that allow the monochrome killer sneak past snipers, turrets, and traps with ease, making a sneaky Reaper attack the bane of many a Widowmaker, Bastion, and Torbjörn. Since Reaper's tools of the trade are two…*sigh* Hellfire Shotguns, getting all up in your opponents' collective grills is the only way to go. Should you find yourself encountering an enemy outside of your preferred range, use Wraith Form and peace out or you'll be the one meeting the reaper instead. The grizzled grandpa of Overwatch may seem like a generic Call of Duty- style run-and-gun type, but there are few more solid picks for an Offense character than ol' Jack Morrison. The key is balancing use of his Pulse Rifle with his explosive Helix Rockets - the precision of the former in short bursts and the splash damage of the latter makes 76 an adept for players who like a little distance in firefights. 76's more "conventional" style of FPS play is also an intentional move by Blizzard to create a character perfect to acclimating to the over-the-top cartoon antics of Overwatch with. You can't do better for a starter hero who can later become a tried-and-true with a little practice. Like a good Vin Diesel movie, Tracer's playstyle is fast and furious. Newer players will need to adjust to the speed of her Blink teleport and rapid-fire Pulse Pistols, but once you have handle on her, expect to be a hassle for the enemy team. Blinking through enemy lines - or using Recall to duck out of a sticky situation - makes Tracer a perfect pick for taking out problems in the back row, such as stationary turrets or all-too-comfortable snipers. However, Tracer is about as sturdy as dry linguini noodles - she'll crumple to just about anything that can land a solid hit on her. Also, Recall may rewind you back to safety, but it's not a get-out-of-jail-free card - it won't prevent a stun or getting knocked down! Bastion may get you hate for playing a supposed "zero-skill" hero, but at the end of the day, a Bastion in the right place at the right time can stop an aggressive enemy team dead in its tracks. The Sentry Configuration is the crux of Bastion's playstyle, turning the mute robot into a devastating - albeit immobile - turret. The key is finding a cozy choke point near the objective and keeping the heat on while making sure to take breaks in between firefights to use its Self-Repair ability. Don't go looking for trouble - just let it find you. That said, the most important thing to remember is protecting your six. Damage you take is doubled if hit from behind in Sentry mode, so back up against walls and keep changing up your location so that an enemy Reaper or Tracer can't get the jump on you. 's lethal bow skills make him an excellent choice for players looking for an alternative take on sniping, but you may want to spend some time at the shooting range before you take him online. Once you're comfortable with Hanzo, regularly loose a Sonic Arrow to scout out potential prey - or avoid stumbling into a trap - while saving room- clearing Scatter Arrows as a close-range or trick shot maneuver if you wind up caught up in the thick of it. Much like his brother, Genji, Hanzo rewards skill with versatility and efficient eliminations, but just expect to be getting Play of the Games for yelling "RYUU GA WAGA TEKI WO KURAU! " instead of landing slick headshots. Junkrat's arsenal of grenades, mines, and bear traps give him an 'X-factor' when it comes to dislodging battened-down enemy teams. This is especially the case when Junkrat has the higher ground. Detonating a Concussion Mine beneath Junkrat's feet on it is an easy way to access hard-to-reach places, so practice this skill liberally. While you're at it, practice everything else. Junkrat's lobbed weapons and traps require a little skill to have land just where you want them, and knowing the topography of each map is a must, so get to work! is essentially what would happen if you ran Mister Freeze through the Pixar character design department. She freezes enemies dead in their tracks, throws up walls, and can shield herself from the worst an opponent can throw back - making her very tricky for novices playing as her, and doubly frustrating for novices playing against her. Mei works best when numbers are in her favor, as she can only concentrate on freezing one subject at a time (unless she's using her Ultimate) and having your whole team gang up on a frozen foe-sicle is an easy kill. Leave her to go solo, however, and her usefulness begins to melt away. Just chill near the objective, play ice with your allies, and give your enemies the cold shoulder. This Swedish mechanic can set up a mean defense thanks to his trusty hand-built turret. In the right position, Torbjörn's mechanical sentry can be just as much a hassle for the enemy team as a well-placed Bastion, without ever having to actually be present! Finding the right place to build is key, but the real trick is making sure you're spending downtime hunting scrap to build armor for you and your team, on top of keeping your turret in good shape. One thing to watch out for, however, is knowing when to cut your loses and begin anew. Torbjörn's Rivet Gun isn't much for engaging the enemy, and going back to save a turret under fire could result in going down with the ship. As classic as a sniper class gets, Widowmaker is perfect for precision- minded players with a steady hand. Besides the obvious long-range advantage she lords over the competition, she also sports some handy mobility with her Grappling Hook. Grappling up to ledges and rooftops is one way to exploit this ability, but the Hook can also help Widowmaker flee to a neighboring vantage point if her position is compromised. Her motion-activated Venom Mine is also as good at offense as it is saving Widow's hide. Place them somewhere near your flank and they can help warn when an enemy's getting too close for comfort - ensuring a clean getaway or even a premeditated counter-attack! Thanks to a recent patch, D. Va is now a solid hitter in the Tank department. Her Defense Matrix puts up an impressive barrier that - especially when combined with her MEKA's boosters - can easily close the distance between her and her foe. She also sports the highest amount of armor in the game - indicated by the yellow portion of her hit pool - making her especially effective against rapid- fire heroes like Tracer or Soldier: 76. Her self-destructing mecha also got a buff, now detonating faster and making D. Va immune to its blast, so hit those boosters, start the countdown, and jump out to some fireworks. Also, while D. Va is caught outside her exosuit, don't give up! Spam her side arm - it's actually stronger and more accurate than the mecha's Fusion Cannons. Just don't get too cocky - without her mobile suit, she can't exactly soak up damage when she's exposed. Reinhardt is one of those heroes that works well in just about any map, and easily the tankiest Tank to ever tank. Old Reiny can throw his weight (and battlehammer) around in a pinch, but his bullet-soaking Barrier Shield is where it's at. Protecting the objective, a friendly turret, or your favorite medic won't just net thumbs-up from the rest of your team - it wins matches. Keep a mental note not to over-extend, however, as Reinhardt's flanks are easy to exploit if you venture too far from the team and since attacking requires dropping your shield, fighting back may only make things worse. With redonk amounts of health - and no trouble keeping it full thanks to his healing ability, Take a Breather - Roadhog has the sustainability of a classic jungler , to use League of Legends parlance. Self-healing has a low cooldown and even helps build up his Ultimate, so slot in frequent Breathers and keep in the fight. The real meat is Roadhog's Chain Hook - allowing him to snag unsuspecting foes (such as an errant or entrenched Bastion) and bring them in for a big ol' Roadhug. Just remember: the Scrap Gun only holds four shots, so losing count could result in an embarrassing moment where your Chain Hook victim just watches you reload instead of getting blasted in the face. Despite being a massive gorilla, is both well-spoken and a capable defender in battle. His Jump Pack ability allows to slam into enemy lines from a distance, disrupting their flow with his protective Barrier Projector and auto-aiming Tesla Cannon - the latter being especially effective against hard-to-hit nuisances like Genji or Tracer. An excellent pick for making the opposing team scatter, Winston can easily mess with backstage Support-types and long-range heroes who've gotten a little too comfortable. Check that your team will actually show up with reinforcements before you jump in, however, because Winston becomes a big target for a counter-attack once the Barrier drops. An intriguing blend of Tank and Support, 's barriers can protect herself and her allies for brief moments - all the while channelling that damage into her Particle Cannon to make it deadlier. The key here is juggling barriers - namely waiting until you or a teammate is already getting hit to soak up as much damage as possible. The damage bonus slowly wears down, so keep looking for opportunities to cast barriers! Zarya plays best when she's playing the pseudo-medic on top of her normal duties as a burly, so if sticking close to the team isn't your jam, you may want to consider a new hero. Ana is a sniper/Support mix, hurting enemies from a distance while popping allies to restore their health. She can also use her Biotic Grenade to boost your team's healing rate - or stop your opposition from healing at all! While it's tempting to pick Ana outright because she's the shiny new hero added to the roster, her tricky skillset and distinct lack of mobility makes her an easy target if she's not protected. Also, providing support is all about precision, so fire-and-forget types may find Mercy or Lúcio better choices for playing Support. If you've got the touch, Ana can create massive advantage for your team, but be sure to practice so you don't wind up a liability instead. The true essence of the Support class, Lúcio makes the team better just by standing there, boosting allies in earshot with his healing/speed-boosting jams. Lúcio can also use his Sonic Amplifier's Soundwave skill to buy your team some breathing room from aggressive enemies - that, or push them off a ledge to their death, so learn the map if you want to rack up some kills on the side while pushing your team. As mobile as he is, don't stray too far from the group. Lúcio's no good to the team when out of their range, and even less useful if he's picked off by a wandering McCree or Pharah. Arguably the easiest Support hero for newcomers, and possibly the most powerful in the hands of experts, a well-played Mercy can turn a losing game around on a dime. On top of her standard M. O. of healing allies from a distance, Mercy's damage boost can help her patients pick off enemies, ensuring that she's always making a difference as long as she's applying some kind of buff to someone. Couple this with her Guardian Angel dash for added mobility and, of course, the ability to resurrect fallen allies in the middle of a losing fight, and you can see why Mercies are often a must-have for any team that's short a Support hero. Just be sure to stick to the background and let the team do the dirty work - Mercy's Resurrect doesn't work on herself, after all. Symmetra doesn't play Support like other heroes in her class. She doesn't heal, debuff the enemy, or increase your damage output. Instead, she supports the team's effort by setting up turrets, outfitting allies with shields, and even setting up a teleport to get freshly-respawned heroes back in the fray instantly. Symmetra's turrets can be particularly distracting for the enemy team, so be sure to stick them somewhere hard to reach, like a blind spot or the ceiling, so that impatient Tracers or Genjis burn through most of their health just trying to find trap they've sprung before neutralizing it. Keep your head on a swivel, though! Symmetra is good at aiding others in battle, but going one-on-one is a sure way to wind up using your teleport after being blasted back to the spawn room. Ever since the latest patch buffed him up to "playable," the spiritual Omnic has been seeing a lot more play lately. Novices will still have to work at it to achieve Zen, but anyone desiring a more aggressive take on Support need not ignore him anymore. The key is mobility and lining up your shots - Zenyatta's Orb of Harmony and Orb of Discord heal allies and weaken enemies, respectively, but require a constant line of sight. Juggling your Orbs with purpose and concentrating on one friend and one enemy at a time is key. With some practice targeting friends and foes - plus some well-placed Orbs of Destruction for the latter - Zenyatta can be surprisingly hard-hitting for a Support hero. You can thank Blizzard's update schedule for that one.

Hands on: Cat S60 review Sometimes, one standout feature in a smartphone can help it pull ahead of the crowd and become an almost instant classic. Caterpillar's Cat S60 smartphone almost manages to accomplish that feat thanks to a unique feature, a heat sensor, that transformed it into the world's first thermal imaging smartphone. Available for pre-order from Cat's own website (or Ebuyer ) at just under £530 (around $695, AU$930), the S60 is not cheap but is certainly one of the best, if not the best, rugged smartphone on the market right now, with specs to match a mid-to-high-end smartphone. Just as a reminder, the BlackView BV6000 , which is another rugged phone with very similar specs bar the FLIR camera, costs about £150 (around $195, AU$265) but it doesn't have the cachet of the S60, plus it lacks a few important points (the above and below images show these two models side-by-side). So for about a tenner less than the Apple iPhone 6S , you get a phone that is both robust and significantly faster than all rugged smartphones on the market. This handset might be big (222g and a thickness of 12.66mm) but it is very well constructed, feeling reassuringly solid. It has a strengthened die-cast frame that gives it a polished look and allows it to be dropped from 1.8m. Volume rocker buttons can be found on one side while the power button, a yellow programmable button and three flaps are on the other. The first flap hides a red SOS button which, on pressing, sends your location to pre-listed contacts. The second one covers the USB port and the third one protects the audio connector. It is the first smartphone we know of that comes with a headphone socket on the side. The top of the handset is occupied by the FLIR thermal camera – which protrudes slightly – with an optical camera and a flash located below it. Turn the phone over onto its textured back and there's the unmissable Cat logo and a hinged flap that hides the microSD card and the SIM card. Flip it over and the front shows the Cat logo again as well as three physical buttons and two toggle buttons which Cat calls the lockdown switches. Flip them and the phone will be able to work underwater (but not make calls) at depths of up to 5m for up to an hour by sealing the front speaker and microphone – without this measure, you're only covered up to 2m. The 4.7-inch display is an HD a-Si AHVA model and while using Gorilla Glass 4 makes it super resistant, it is prone to attracting fingerprint smudges. Note that you will be able to use it with gloves and in a wet environment. So this is a phone which offers a good level of grip, won't slip out of your hand easily, is waterproof and, according to its manufacturer, exceeds military specifications with its IP68 certification, making it impervious to water and dust. The thermal micro camera used is a customised FLIR Lepton which is accessed separately using FLIR's @work app. The latter can be used to take pictures and make videos. Additional apps, like the FLIR tools mobile, can increase its functionality. Alternatively, Cat has a curated list of applications available via an App Toolbox. These include farming apps, construction apps and more. You should be able to see through thin walls and the app colours in spots with different temperatures in real-time. That means that colour shifts happen when something abruptly becomes far warmer/cooler than the rest of the environment. It can deliver temperature readings to an accuracy of one decimal point and, according to Cat is accurate to a maximum distance of 30m and can do night vision as well. In use, we found out that the nearer you are to the targeted source, the higher the temperature would become. Temperature reading also depends on whether the target has a matte or a glossy finish as this has an impact on heat dissipation. As for the rest of the specification, it includes an 8-core Qualcomm MSM8952 SoC, 3GB of RAM, 32GB on-board storage, a microSD card slot, a 3,800mAh battery with Quick Charge 2.0, a 13-megapixel rear camera with dual LED flash, along with a 5-megapixel front-facing one. There's also Bluetooth 4.1, NFC, 802.11n Wi-Fi, dual SIM, a speaker capable of delivering 105dB, FM radio, GPS/GLONASS/Beidou, LTE Cat4 and stock Android 6.0 Marshmallow as the OS. The display of the S60 is brighter than expected and the fact that it is HD only didn't bother us during the brief time we had with it. However, the small size of the display (4.7-inch) could cause a problem for someone with big hands wearing gloves. Testing the phone under Antutu yielded a score of 45,654 marks which is almost identical to the MTK6755 found in the Blackview BV6000. As expected, this is powerful enough for most tasks and we didn't encounter any issues with sluggish apps or non-responsive pages. Let's be honest, this is not your average boring Android smartphone. It is thick and expensive but its unique selling point more than makes up for all this. This is a handset with a thermal camera – and a standalone FLIR thermal camera costs £200 (around $260, AU$350) by itself, and obviously doesn't offer the same level of integration. Then there's the fact that it is the most powerful rugged smartphone on the market, one that not only boasts IP68 certification but also does it in style. If you work in the construction industry or you're in the market for anything that requires an extremely sturdy smartphone and a portable thermal imaging camera, then choosing the Cat S60 is an absolute no-brainer. For the rest of us, it is an expensive gadget, the novelty value of which is likely to wear off after a few trips to show it off down the pub. That said, it's a great handset if you are fed up of cracking the screen of your expensive phone and having to fork out a couple of hundred quid to get it repaired every time you drop it in the aforementioned pub's toilets.

Partners Expect Potential Fallout From Verizon's $4.83B Yahoo Acquisition - Page: 1 Solution providers said Verizon’s $4.83 billion acquisition of Yahoo could have a negative ripple effect as the telecom giant attempts to integrate the web company's consumer content business. "I do think that this acquisition will distract them from their core services. It may only be a temporary distraction, but it could impact things for them," said one Verizon partner who requested anonymity. [Related: It's Official: Verizon To Acquire Yahoo For $4.83 Billion ] The acquisition comes at a time in which service providers should be focusing their attention and resources on cloud solutions and next- generation technologies, as well as the digital business development. But instead, Verizon will be focusing on "the integration of all this consumer activity," the Verizon partner said. "I see Verizon potentially having issues keeping up with their competitors who are not spending as much time in the consumer space," the partner said. Basking Ridge, N. J.-based Verizon officially announced Monday it plans to acquire ailing internet giant Yahoo's operating business -- its media, search and communications assets -- in an all-cash deal. Verizon Chairman and CEO Lowell McAdam said that the acquisition will help Verizon become a global mobile media company, and help accelerate the carrier’s digital advertising revenue stream. A spokesperson for Verizon told CRN that the most recent transaction "has no effect on our continuing commitment to our business customers. " Because of the slow-moving nature of the telecom industry, Verizon might not be well positioned to properly leverage struggling Yahoo's assets, said Michael Bremmer, CEO of TelecomQuotes.com, a telecom consultancy firm. "My thought is that Yahoo, sadly, will end up on the scrap heap of history because of their failure to evolve," Bremmer said. "Verizon still thinks like your grandfather's phone company. … [Verizon] isn't known for innovation, and I doubt they'll be able to turn Yahoo around either. " Allen Falcon, founder and CEO of Cumulus Global, a 12-year-old Westborough, Mass., cloud solution provider, said the disruption from the deal opens the door to move Yahoo mail customers to competitors such as Microsoft Office 365 or Google Gmail. "There is a significant opportunity to capture small and midsize email customers from Yahoo in the wake of the Verizon acquisition," he said. "We are hoping businesses will want to move from Yahoo mail to Office 365 or Google Apps, which provide much broader services than just email. " Falcon’s message to Yahoo email customers: "With the Verizon acquisition of Yahoo and the Verizon focus on content, the future of Yahoo email is uncertain. Now may be a good time to start looking at alternatives that deliver more than just email with communication, collaboration, document and cloud storage services. " Falcon said he is getting ready to initiate an email and phone outbound marketing campaign targeting the some 6,000 Yahoo mail domains. Cumulus Global has moved some two dozen Yahoo mail customers to Office 365 and Google over the past several years. “Whenever there is an acquisition of this size there is an opportunity to grab share from the company that is being acquired,” he said.

23 How to use Microsoft Edge, Windows 10's new browser Like Windows 10, Edge aims to make life simple. The interface is basic, urging you to pay more attention to the Web content it displays than the user interface itself. And the settings provide a number of simple toggles to turn features on and off. Edge's Launch screen tends to fill with snippets of content from news, weather, and other topics. First, you’ll need to launch Edge. Some of you may prefer to find the “edgy E” icon in the Start menu, others in the list of all apps. But if you look down at the bottom of the screen, chances are that you’ll find the small “e” icon. Click it. The Edge icon is the blue "e". Once you launch Edge, you’ll see a broad, gray window (above), most likely full of small snippets of content from Microsoft’s topical content aggregators, the MSN apps. Microsoft makes an effort to make the homepage something like Cortana or your Start menu, with some rotating news pieces, the weather, and maybe even some sports scores. Note the small “Customize” link to the upper right. That opens up a really bare-bones page where you can highlight one or more of six topics to highlight on the homepage. If you were expecting subtopics or specialized interests, they weren’t there at press time. When you launch a new tab, you might also see some small, square icons containing frequently-visited sites. At top, you’ll see the search box. Launch a new tab (CTRL+T), and Edge may show you this view. Note that you'll have the option of configuring this in the Settings menu. By default, Edge uses the Bing search engine to search, which we’ve found to be the equal to Google in most regards. Remember, you can either type a Web address directly into the search box, or else enter a search term or two that Bing can hunt down. Below the standard Windows 10 navigation icons (gray bar) lie the Microsoft Edge icons. From left: Reading View, Favorites, The Hub, Web Notes, Share, and the ellipsis Settings menu. While you probably know your way around a modern browser by now, here’s the quick guide to navigating Edge: To the upper left are back- and forward- arrows, followed by the loop icon to reload a page. Once you add a home icon, it will appear next. The search/address bar is in the middle of the screen. And to the top right are the icons we’ll be exploring in a bit: Reading View, Favorites, the Hub (Reading List), Web Notes, Share, and finally the Settings icon. Surfing privately via an InPrivate window requires you to click the ellipsis menu in the upper right corner, then launch the InPrivate session via drop- down option. InPrivate won’t hide your activity from your employer or your ISP, however, as they can track your activity at the network level. But your browsing won’t leave a record on your PC. The two things you’ll probably want to do immediately are set up a homepage, and import any saved bookmarks. Unfortunately, adding a homepage requires an unexpectedly deep dive into the Settings menu, of all places. See that ellipsis (...) menu to the upper right? Click it, scroll down to the Settings, and then all the way down, again, to the “View advanced settings” button. At the very top of that page, you’ll see a toggle to “show the home button.” Make sure that’s enabled, and then add a homepage, such as (ahem) PCWorld.com. You can dive into the advanced Settings menu to set a home page. (This is using Edge's dark menu option.) In the Settings menu, you may have seen a toggle to switch between the “light” and “dark” theme. You may not be a fan of the light theme; I’m not. Swap it to the dark theme for a bit more panache. Importing favorites requires you to enter the Settings menu yet again, but just the first page. You’ll probably want the Favorites bar turned on, and then click “Import Favorites from another browser.” This is where it gets a bit tricky. If you’re exporting favorites from Internet Explorer 11 from another PC, enter the Favorites tab, click the drop-down menu at the top, wade through the menus, and then export the file to C:\Users\YOURNAME\Documentsookmark.htm. Copy it to the Windows 10 PC and try importing the favorites file. If that doesn’t work, import the favorites to IE11, then use Edge to copy the favorites over automatically from that browser. If you’ve traditionally worked in Chrome, it’s much simpler. Download Chrome onto your PC, which will automatically sync your bookmarks. Then switch to Edge, and import the favorites from there. If you want to rearrange your Favorites, though, you’ll have to keep reading. You may need to export your favorites from Internet Explorer 11 or Firefox, especially if you're transitioning from another computer. If Edge can't open a particular Web site, you'll see an option in the Settings to open the site in Internet Explorer. It's also worth noting that Edge can't open files encoded in Silverlight, which Microsoft uses for many of its support files. For that, you'll need IE. What are extensions? If you've used pretty much any other browser, than you know that extensions are little bits and pieces of code that extend the improve the functionality of the browser. Extensions can include tools to help you "clip" Web pages for later reading, block ads, help you manage documents stored on the Web, and so on. If you're reading this after August 2, 2016, then the ability to open Edge extensions should be in your Edge browser already. Here's how to find them: The new Edge extensions sit in the upper right, and can be accessed via the ellipsis menu. Note that you can turn them on or off as you wish. First, open the ellipsis menu in the upper right-hand corner of your screen. Then scroll down to "Extensions". You're almost done. That will open up your Extensions menu, which shouldn't have anything in it, yet. But there's a link at the bottom: "Get extensions from the Store". That's what you want. That link will take you to the Microsoft Store. Normally, you'd use the Store to download apps. That link, though, will take you to a list of app-like extensions. Pick the ones you want: they should be all free, and once you choose to install them Microsoft will take care of everything in the background. I've seen some sketchy extensions with other browsers; when we wrote this at the end of July 2016, they were all of high quality: AdBlock and AdBlock Plus; Translator for Microsoft Edge; Reddit Enhancement Suite, LastPass, and more. Some of the Edge extensions available to you within the Microsoft Store. Right-click a term, and Cortana swoops in to assist. Within the Anniversary Edition, Cortana also has some new, great tricks. I have two favorites: what I like to call Cortana "coupon clipping," and how she can help you find the item that you're looking for. Coupon clipping happens automatically when you visit a shopping site, like Target.com or BestBuy.com. Cortana will appear in the upper right-hand of the URL bar, and if you click on the icon, she'll provide one or more coupons for that shopping site. Not all of them are going to be relevant; those are just the coupon codes the retailer may be offering. Still, they're handy to have. Coupon clipping with Cortana and Edge. Edge also uses Cortana and Bing to help you find what you're looking for online. Sure, you might be able to find a picture of a nice suit or summer dress, but where can you actually buy it? Cortana can help. Note that this doesn't appear to be too different than the results Bing would normally supply, but they're at least better organized. Microsoft Edge allows you to right-click an image and "ask Cortana" to find places where you might be able to buy the object in question. Cortana can also find the nearest location of a restaurant or shop. What's the closest location? Edge knows. I like Reading View, both as a writer and a user. The premise is simple: Reading View strips out all the cruft around an article—all the extraneous ads, navigation bars, everything. But it does so after it loads the page. This allows sites like PCWorld to receive revenue, but still allows you to enjoy a pure reading experience. It’s a simple, workable compromise. Microsoft's Reading View in action. Trust us, this is a far cry from what the main CNN site looks like. We’ve already discussed how to import Favorites above. To save a tab to your list of Favorites, just click the Favorite (star) icon. You can save it in a new folder, or an existing folder. You also have the option of saving an article to the Reading List, which is essentially a temporary bookmark of a story you want to read, but not keep forever. But wait! you cry. Shouldn’t I be able to organize my Favorites in... Favorites? Nope! For that, you’ll need to move next door to the Hub. Edge's The Hub is broken down into four submenus: Favorites, Reading List, History, and Downloads. The Hub is broken down into four submenus: the Favorites, the Reading List, History, and Downloads. The latter two don’t need much explanation. The Hub > Favorites menu is where you actually organize your Favorites. You can move folders up and down, drag bookmarks (or Favorites) back and forth, and generally reorganize things to your heart’s content. If you move items back and forth in the Favorites Bar folder, you’ll see those items dynamically adjust in the Favorites Bar itself. No, there’s no auto- alphabetizing, and you can’t drag folders into folders to create subfolders. For me, Web Notes are Edge’s most controversial feature. Microsoft has intimated that Web Notes should be regarded as something amazing, and yet they’re actually rather mundane. But that doesn’t mean they’re not useful.

24 Dead Heat In Solution Provider Support For Democrats-Republicans As Democratic Convention Gets Under Way - Page: 1 Solution provider support for Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump and Democratic presidential presumptive nominee Hillary Clinton is dead even as the Democratic National Convention gets under way this week in Philadelphia, according to a survey of 253 solution providers conducted by CRN. Approximately 47.4 percent of solution providers surveyed said Clinton would be the better candidate for their business with another 47.4 percent pledging their support for Trump. Approximately 5.1 percent of respondents listed alternative parties. The even split shows a dramatic fall-off in support for Trump, who had led over Clinton as a better candidate for the business prospects of technology solution providers by a margin of 48 to 38 percent in the monthly CRN poll in June, with 14 percent listing alternative parties. [Related: Support for GOP Presidential Win Holds Steady Among Partners After Trump Has Become Presumptive Nominee ] Allen Falcon, founder and CEO of Cumulus Global, a 12-year-old Westborough, Mass.-based cloud solution provider who participated in the July poll, said he sees Trump feeding the economic uncertainty that is hurting his business. “Trump feeds that uncertainty because his statements and policies are so unpredictable,” said Falcon. “Whether you agree or disagree with Hillary Clinton’s economic strategy, she has a plan that is going to provide a level of consistency and predictability that we would not get from Trump. The challenge with Trump is that when he is asked about the economy, he has no specific plan. He simply says, ‘ I am going to get the best people and we’ll make it better.' It is unclear what, if anything, he is actually going to do.” Many small and midsize businesses are putting IT projects on hold until they have a “better sense of whether the economy will continue to grow slowly or take a downturn,” said Falcon. “We see many companies almost afraid to take risks and make changes because of the uncertain economic future. Trump is feeding into that economic uncertainty.” Cumulus Global’s sales growth has ranged from 15 percent to 40 percent month to month but would be even higher if there was more certainty around the economy, said Falcon. Falcon also sees continued congressional gridlock if Trump is elected president even with a Republican majority. “I am convinced that Trump will spend a significant amount of time fighting with the Republican Congress,” he said. Rod Basala, owner of Millenium Systems, a 20-year-old voice/data technology solution provider based in Antioch, Ill., said he is dumbfounded by the support for Clinton. “Are people nuts?” he asked. “Don’t these people see what Hillary Clinton would do to businesses? Trump is the right candidate because he is a businessman. That’s what this country needs in the White House -- a businessman. We need someone that will run the country like a business, not another politician.” Basala said the economic uncertainty impacting his customers has more companies coming to him for break/fix tech work, which is the company's specialty, rather than major IT projects. “When the economy is bad, we do well,” he said. “Our business is up 50 percent as companies make small changes to their business. We are benefiting from that.” Basala is particularly concerned with Clinton’s support to raise the minimum wage, which he expects would negatively impact his business.

Agile 2016: cPrime reveals a new approach to agile: the Software Services Lifecycle Management ATLANTA — cPrime wants to address the fragmentation it sees in the agile space. The company announced the Software Services Lifecycle Management (SSLM) at the Agile 2016 conference today. SSLM is a new approach designed to support and promote the new connected world of software development and delivery. According to Zubin Irani, CEO of cPrime, although agile and DevOps initiatives aim to break down cultural barriers, silos still remain in the business because there is still a disconnect in software workflows. He explained that there is a resistance to tools, inadequate focus on technical requirements, and too much ineffective agile coaching that are slowing the progress of software delivery. SSLM aims to solve this by providing practical steps to aligning processes, tools and business objectives. (Related: Scrum’s not dead yet ) “We feel this approach is long overdue as we see many software organizations using services in disconnected ways that lead to increased chances of software failure,” said Irani. He believed this approach is more important than ever with the rise of DevOps and the maturity of agile. Organizations can no longer have disconnected teams and processes as well as look at developer training or coaching as separate strategies, he said. SSLM was designed to create a unified service strategy by teaching organizations how tools and processes complement each other. The SSLM tenets are: “Software Services Lifecycle Management addresses the siloed nature of how software services are delivered and consumed in today’s increasingly complex software environments,” said Irani. “We believe that SSLM will benefit individuals, teams, organizations and the industry alike.”

SD Times Blog: Agile 2016: Scrum is not done yet, and neither are you Scrum has been around for the past 21 years, with Scrum.org fueling and supporting the methodology since 2009. According to the organization, today about 90% of teams use Scrum, and more than 1 million people have taken the Scrum.org assessments. But with the recent innovations and ever-changing trends in the software development space, is there still a future for Scrum? Dave West, product owner and CEO of Scrum.org, says yes. West spoke at the Agile 2016 conference in Atlanta about the past, present and future of the popular agile methodology. While the organization recently released the Nexus framework, a lightweight exoskeleton for those looking to scale Scrum, and recently added values to the Scrum guide, Scrum.org is not done helping Scrum evolve—and neither are software developers. (Related: Agile 2016: Happy workers are productive workers ) According to West, there are a variety of different concepts of “done” in the software industry. Some teams believe they are done when they finish development; others believe it ends at operations; and then there are a few that don’t believe you are done until you reach business agility. “What we see is that ‘done’ is being fragmented across many organizational boundaries; people don’t really get it, there is not a universal definition,” he said. To address this problem, West revealed that the organization is working on a Scrum Development Kit, similar to a developer’s SDK. While the organization still isn’t exactly sure what it intends to do with the Scrum Development Kit, the intent is to provide Scrum teams everything they need to deliver working software. According the him, the kit will include development environments, the definition of “done,” best practices, architecture tools, development standards, apps and module calls, and support for ALM toolsets. In addition, West revealed the organization has Scrum Studio in the works, making it a new approach to enterprise agility. According to him, you can’t do incremental change inside of an organization because it is impossible to change the culture. “We are seeing over and over again a repeating theme that ultimately the only way to build an agile organization is not to start with an existing organization,” he said. Scrum Studio will provide a model that organizations can use to grow agile and Scrum. It will use evidence-based measurement, ensure a consistent development path, introduce and support an SDK, and aims to set a standard for professional software delivery. “[Scrum] is not over yet, is it?” he said. “We need to continue to improve. We need to fix some of these issues of delivering value to our customers. We need to stop failing in that pursuit. We need to become more professional, [and] we need to move away from water-Scrum-fall.”

Verizon must pay even if Mozilla walks from Yahoo search deal Verizon, which today announced its intention to purchase Yahoo for $4.8 billion, will be on the hook to Mozilla for more than $1 billion through 2019. According to Yahoo's CEO, Marissa Mayer, Verizon may be liable for partial payments even if Mozilla cuts ties to Yahoo and seeks another search provider. Earlier this month, Recode and the New York Times claimed that the 2014 Yahoo-Mozilla contact gave Mozilla the right to switch to another search provider if Yahoo was sold. The contract, signed in November 2014, made Yahoo the default search provider for Mozilla's Firefox browser in the U. S. market. In return, Mozilla would receive $375 million annually for five years, or through the end of 2019. Yahoo's annual payment was about $100 million more than Google paid Mozilla during their last deal, which ran just three years, from late 2012 to late 2014. While Recode and the New York Times agreed on Mozilla's ability to get out of the Yahoo contract, they differed on the financials. Recode contended that Yahoo -- and thus any buyer -- was obligated to pay the full $375 million each year, even if Mozilla deemed the buyer unacceptable and switched providers in Firefox. The New York Times, however, said that if Mozilla dumped Yahoo, the latter would only have to make up the difference between its $375 million and the payment of Mozilla's new search partner. Both publications reported that Mozilla had the right to demand all remaining payments as a lump sum if it exited the Yahoo contract. Assuming Verizon closes the Yahoo deal in early 2017 -- as it intends -- under those terms, Verizon could be forced to fork over approximately $1.1 billion to cover the final three years of the Mozilla contract. But during a conference call with Wall Street analysts last week, Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer disputed parts of the accounts by Recode and the New York Times. In her prepared remarks, Mayer clarified the contract's impact, citing "questions surrounding our Mozilla partnership," obviously referring to the media reports, to discuss the deal. "While we would certainly like to continue the partnership regardless of our strategic alternatives process, should Mozilla choose not to, our agreement does provide for certain mitigations, which would reduce our exposure," Mayer said. "Ultimately, it remains in our mutual best interest to maintain a healthy path forward, and we do hope to do just that. " Mayer thus confirmed that the ball is in Mozilla's court -- it could nullify the partnership after a sale -- but also challenged the accounts that said Verizon would have to pay the full balance of the contracted payments. ("Reduce our exposure" is corporate-speak for reducing expenses.) When a Wall Street analyst later asked for more information about the Mozilla deal, Mayer repeated her assertions that the media got it wrong. "On Mozilla there's not a lot more that I can say because it is a confidential relationship," Mayer said. "But we did want to point out, because I think it has been misunderstood, at least with some of the analyses I've seen, it has been misunderstood that there is a mitigation in the contract that ultimately would reduce some of our exposure and liabilities. " Mayer's comments did not explicitly confirm the New York Times narrative -- that Verizon would have to pay the difference between $375 million and whatever Mozilla received from a new provider -- but her use of "mitigations" when talking about the contract implied as much. Neither Mozilla or Yahoo immediately replied to questions today about the impact of the Verizon purchase on Yahoo's search sources. But one analyst believes the Verizon-Yahoo deal would not move Mozilla to strike out for another partner. "I don't see why the Verizon acquisition changes either the search or the browser dynamic in the market," said Al Hilwa of IDC. "I think it is mostly an issue of [Verizon having assessed] the risk and factoring that into the valuation of Yahoo. " Mozilla might not have options if it did want to abandon Yahoo, a decision that in any case seems improbable, what with the premium it's being paid by Mayer's firm. The other two big players in search -- Google and Microsoft -- have browsers of their own to feed users into their engines. Of the two, Microsoft would appear to be the most likely to add Firefox: Bing badly trails Google in search share, and Microsoft's browser share has sharply slumped this year.

6 Slack alternatives worth a look Once upon a time if you wanted employees to collaborate you'd probably encourage them to use Internet Relay Chat (IRC). But about three years ago Slack appeared on the scene, and since then it's been eating IRC's lunch. That's because it's much easier to install, get up and running, and use than IRC, making it massively popular with nontechies. And thanks to a well-documented API it's easy to integrate with other programs and services. That means it's customizable and infinitely extensible, which makes it popular with developers. But, ultimately, Slack is just a group communication tool, albeit a very nice one. And there are plenty of alternatives. [ Also on CIO.com: Chat happens: Your guide to 8 group-chat services ] One concern about Slack for many organizations is that Slack Technologies, the company behind the product, is a relatively new one with a product that is growing explosively. That kind of growth can be tricky to manage and attracts interest from companies on the acquisition trail. Slack is also cloud-based, which raises questions about availability as well as the privacy and security of your data. 30 Twitter scores live-stream deals with MLB, NBA, NHL and NFL Twitter's hunt for major sports programming hit a new high today as the company struck deals to live- stream some out-of-market games from Major League Baseball (MLB) and the National Hockey League (NHL). During the past three months, the company signed live-stream deals with all of the "Big Four" major sports leagues, and July has been particularly busy. Twitter also inked partnerships with the National Basketball Association (NBA), Pac-12 Conference, Bloomberg Media and CBS News earlier this month. Twitter's user growth remains sluggish, and the company is clearly trying to reinvigorate its platform by making it the go-to destination for live sports, news and media broadcasts. Twitter has had close relationships with major entertainment and sports brands for some time. However, this latest foray into live streaming is the most significant development in its media strategy to date. Users got a preview of Twitter's live sports chops during the Wimbledon tennis tournament earlier this month, but the company failed to differentiate its stream experience from others. That live stream from match play at Wimbledon was a test, according to the company, and it plans to make many improvements before launching the feature more formally in September. Twitter eventually wants to let anyone, whether they're a Twitter user or not, watch live-streamed games from the National Football League (NFL) , NBA, MLB and NHL. The social network says it also plans to stream a new nightly show called "The Rally" that will provide daily highlights from sports commentary exclusively to Twitter users in the United States. The show will be produced by sports programing company 120 Sports and "will combine the production and editorial values of television with the speed and interactivity of digital media," said Jason Coyle, president of 120 Sports, in a statement. Twitter's streaming sports deals highlight the complexity of sports programming rights. The company will stream the first 10 Thursday night NFL games this coming season. However, its agreement with the NBA calls for a new weekly show with exclusive live programming but does not include actual games. Twitter has not announced which specific MLB and NHL games it plans to live-stream, but they will be once a week live streams of out-of-market games. The current Twitter live sports lineup is light, and it's designed not threaten current rights holders' lucrative broadcast TV contracts. Though Twitter may not have rights to live stream the biggest sports games yet, it is steadily chipping away at the walls that surround professional sports programming.

Gilat Satcom launches ISP in Uganda Ugandans are set to enjoy fast, reliable and highly secure broadband services following the entry of Gilat Satcom Telecom into the market. Gilat Satcom has a presence in over 30 African countries with a growing range of fiber routes in coastal and landlocked Africa. Gilat Satcom was one of the first companies in Africa to offer both non-stop East to West coast-to-coast and international connectivity. Its Pan-Africa satellite footprint allows its MPLS network to reach the most remote areas of the continent. Both its fiber and satellite networks connect to the WACS, EASSy and SEACOM undersea cables; Gilat Satcom is a shareholder in WIOCC which owns WACS. Gilat Satcom has been operational in Africa for more than 15 years providing wholesale international connectivity to the continent’s communication service providers. As part of its ongoing investment in Africa, Uganda is the third country in which Gilat Satcom has established a physical presence joining Nigeria and Ghana. Gilat Telecom Uganda is a wholly owned subsidiary of Gilat Satcom, headquartered in Kampala. The company will be recruiting locally for a number of new positions. The new ISP will deliver cost-effective communication capacity along with a wealth of value-added technologies and services to business clients over its extensive fiber and satellite links. In particular, customers in Uganda will benefit from a range of new and innovative security measures which Gilat Satcom introduced earlier in the year to prevent Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks which make websites and servers unavailable to legitimate users and block both local and international links. Typically, organizations in Africa have security solutions on their own networks to stop cyber-attacks, however, this approach requires a significant CAPEX and OPEX investment – and most importantly, will not secure their international connectivity. Gilat Satcom has integrated the latest technology which mitigates and prevents a service outage during DDoS attacks so that its customers’ international broadband service is unaffected by an attack and service continuity is ensured. Gilat Telecom also provides advanced traffic management that enables its customers to control capacity usage cost-effectively by defining priorities by service and user. Dan Zajicek, CEO of Gilat Satcom, said “Ugandan businesses need fast and reliable connectivity to help them grow domestically and abroad. We have invested heavily in our networks in Uganda so that our customers can benefit from the very substantial bandwidth and tailored communications services that we already provide across Africa. Customers will also appreciate our significant international communication infrastructure, experience and support.” [CIO]

DRAM Prices Down Over 20% Since Early 2016 Slow sales in the first half of 2016 have negatively affected suppliers of virtually all of PCs, tablets and smartphone components. Producers of DRAM typically suffer more than others when it comes to pricing, since computer memory is considered a commodity and its quotes mostly depend on supply and demand rather than on technology advantages. Since early 2016, prices of DDR3 and DDR4 chips have declined by over 20%, according to DRAMeXchange (a division of TrendForce that tracks DRAM market). Despite the fact that it is slightly costlier to produce DDR4 memory because of slightly larger die sizes, at times the physical DDR4 modules can actually be cheaper than DDR3 ones. Since producers like Micron, Samsung and SK Hynix are not happy with the current situation on the market, observers have reported that the big three intend to implement a plan to control supply. The average spot price of one 4 Gb DDR4-2133 memory chip was $1.751 in late-July, according to DRAMeXchange (most information in this piece is from this source unless otherwise stated). For comparison, in Feb '16 the equivalent chip was $1.814. Going back further, in Dec '15 they were $2.221, and in late June '15 up at $3.618. As it turns out, a 4 Gb DDR4-2133 memory IC (integrated circuit) is nearly 50% cheaper in the last 13 months and around 22% cheaper since the start of the year. The average contract price of a DDR4-2133 DRAM chip was $1.31 in the second half of June, down from $1.63 in the second half of January. Meanwhile, in the recent months DRAMeXchange has begun to track spot prices of 8 Gb DDR4-2133 chips. Right now one chip costs $3.633 on average, down from $4.688 in mid-April. Spot prices of DDR3 memory are dropping fast as well. A 4 Gb DDR3- 1600 memory IC costs $1.675 in Taiwan, down from $1.878 in December and $2.658 in late June '15. In about a year, a 4 Gb DDR3 chip is 37% cheaper, mainly due to slow demand for electronics. 8 Gb DDR3-1600 memory chips are considerably more expensive than DDR4 chips of the same capacity, also tied to demand. At the time of writing (7/22/16), one of such chips cost $4.96. Right now, the spot price of 4 Gb DDR4 memory chips is a little higher than the price of 4 Gb DDR3 DRAM ICs. The gap is only around three cents, but still volatile and we would not make any definitive conclusions at this point as to the reasons why. Back in June, DDR4 chips were cheaper than DDR3 ICs (in fact, they were slightly cheaper than DDR3 chips throughout the whole month) and we observed a similar situation in March, but eventually DDR4 regained its price advantage over its predecessor because the demand for such type of DRAM has grown as Intel is ramping up its DDR4- supporting platforms. It is unclear whether leading DRAM IC producers are now deliberately making more DDR4 chips, such that the supply of such memory exceeds demand. If this is the case, then we are observing the inevitable DDR3/DDR4 price crossover point. If this is not, then, DDR4 will regain its price premium over DDR3 in the coming weeks because more systems are adopting the newer type of memory. It should be obvious that prices of DRAM ICs directly affect the prices of actual memory modules used by PC makers. In the second half of April '16, one 4 GB DDR4-2133 SO-DIMM was priced at $13 on contract basis, down from $15.50 in the second half of January. Meanwhile, the contract price of one 4 GB DDR3-1600 SO-DIMM dropped to $12.50 (down from $15.25 in January, 2016). It is noteworthy that starting from early June prices of DDR3 and DDR4 memory have been slowly increasing. Market observers believe that this is happening because DRAM makers are switching to production of server- class and LPDDR memory, reducing supply of commodity DRAMs ahead of the back-to-school season. Nonetheless, it should be observed that in the last couple of years nothing could stop memory prices from coming down. At various times it looked like they had stabilized or even increased, but in the end, they just continued their slump. Now, let’s take a look what is going on in the U. S. retail.

ISACA’s new guide challenges Mobile Payment security perceptions Tokenization, device- specific cryptograms and two-factor authentication are described as key improvements positioning mobile payments appeal to both consumers and vendors. “Mobile payments, with embedded, improved and transparent security controls, are a great example of how security can act as a business enabler, contributing to the creation of end- user trust,” said Christos Dimitriadis, ISACA Board Chairperson. Advancements in mobile payment security technology are curbing risks and improving consumer trust beyond levels traditionally associated with plastic payment cards, according to the new research. Some of the mechanisms empowering advancements in mobile payment technology include: Tokenization: Secure mobile payment applications or mobile wallets do not transmit a card’s primary account number (PAN), instead sending a randomly generated token to the point of sale (POS) terminal and payment network. This token safeguards the consumer’s data while in transit. “Tokenization is the security solution that is pushing mobile payments ahead of card payments in consumer sensitive financial information protection in the continuous race to stay ahead of hackers and other threats,” according to the ISACA guide. The tokens can be configured to only work for transactions that match specific criteria for an exact period of time, specific retailer and certain monetary amount. Only the issuing bank and authorized entities can securely map tokens back to the original payment card data. Device-specific cryptograms: The cryptogram ensures that the payment originated from the card-holder’s device. If a hacker obtains mobile payment transaction data, the cryptogram that is sent to the POS terminal with the token is unable to be used on another mobile device. This helps render any stolen data unforgeable and useless. Two-factor authentication: This provides an additional layer to guard against mobile payment fraud by utilizing two independent mechanisms for authentication. Among the common credentials used are something the user knows (such as a password), something physical that the user has (such as a payment card or phone) and a biometric such as a fingerprint, voice print or facial recognition. If a mobile device containing a mobile wallet is lost, the mobile device can be remotely erased. And since the consumer’s payment card information is not on the mobile device, the payment cards do not need to be replaced. Like consumers, merchants stand to benefit from mobile payments in many instances. “A key benefit for merchants is that enhanced security should lower fraud and thereby lower costs,” according to the guide. The report also notes that integrating mobile payments into a merchant’s business creates opportunities for more robust customer loyalty programs and allows for purchases in circumstances when customers do not have access to their physical payment card. The security advantages of mobile payments may surprise the public as well as security experts who perceive mobile payments as risky. ISACA’s 2015 Mobile Payment Security Study shows that only 23 percent of IT and cybersecurity professionals said they believe mobile payments keep personal information safe. Still, the global number of mobile payment users is expected to reach 1.09 billion by 2019, according to Ovum, up from 44.55 million in 2014. While modern mobile payment methods offer many benefits, the guide also notes some potential vulnerabilities, including during the one-time enrollment when users register a payment card in the mobile wallet application. Mobile wallet providers use methods such as sending payment card data and a device’s geographical coordinates to issuing banks, and any discrepancies can result in a call seeking additional verification. The guide encourages vendors that adopt mobile payment options to regularly re-evaluate risk control measures to ensure any new scenarios that could emerge are sufficiently addressed.

Lawsuit Raises Questions About The Right To Tinker With Tech The Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) filed suit against the US government on July 21 to overturn a provision of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) which forbids bypassing digital locks. Undoing digital access controls, or technical protection measures (TPMs) -- often referred to as digital restriction management or digital rights management (DRM) -- is unlawful under Section 1201 of the DMCA. Distributing tools that circumvent TPMs is also illegal under the law. Supporters of Section 1201 insist it's necessary to criminalize the cracking of digital locks to prevent the unlawful copying of digital content, otherwise known as copyright infringement. [ How can you keep your data safe? Read 10 Hot Security Technologies Enterprises Need Now . ] While the relevance of Section 1201 to copyright protection remains a matter of dispute , the EFF suit argues the law criminalizes lawful copying, the modification and repair of devices that employ DRM, and security research on protected devices. The law casts a cloud over the public's right to tinker, the organization says. For anyone managing information technology, Section 1201 has the potential to limit access to data, to weaken security, and to impose unnecessary burdens, costs, and liabilities. The EFF is suing on behalf of Andrew "bunnie" Huang, who, through his company Alphamax, is developing devices for editing digital video streams. These devices allow people to alter video content by, for example, adding a dynamic Twitter comment field over a presidential debate. Selling such technology could be challenged under Section 1201. "Section 1201 means that you can be sued or prosecuted for accessing, speaking about, and tinkering with digital media and technologies that you have paid for," Huang wrote in a blog post explaining why he has sued the government. "This violates our First Amendment rights, and I am asking the court to order the federal government to stop enforcing Section 1201. " The EFF is also representing Matthew Green, an assistant professor in the computer science department at Johns Hopkins University, who specializes in cryptography and computer security. Green had to seek a DMCA exemption last year to be assured that his security research was lawful. The government tries to differentiate between unlawful and lawful copyright infringement (fair use) through triennial rulemaking by the Librarian of Congress. The Librarian considers applications for exemptions to the law every three years and grants some of them. Last year, the EFF celebrated the granting of exemptions for activities such as jailbreaking mobile devices to run third-party software. In its complaint , the EFF argues this process is flawed because it places onerous requirements on applicants, which fall outside the scope of copyright law. The cyber rights group's complaint also contends exemptions are inconsistent. Previous exemptions have not been renewed for activities such as researching internet block lists, for testing TPMs for malware, and for allowing mobile phone owners to change carriers. The EFF complaint argues the public cannot rely on exemptions as assurance that lawful activities, such as recording a digital movie on a DVR, will remain lawful. Google's Nest provided a recent example of the potential problem. In late 2014, Nest acquired Revolv, which made an internet of things (IoT) hub. In May, Nest shut down the backend service supporting the Revolv Hub. Ideally, Revolv owners could simply reprogram their devices with different software. But if those devices were protected, then owners would not have a clear legal path for making modifications. The EFF complaint contends Section 1201 interferes with the First Amendment right to free speech by limiting legitimate efforts to repurpose protected content through activities such as documentary filmmaking, ebooks that excerpt digital content for analysis and criticism, integrating digital content into online courses, content format conversion for those with impairments, and restoration of content such as games that are no longer supported. "The government cannot broadly ban protected speech and then grant a government official excessive discretion to pick what speech will be permitted, particularly when the rulemaking process is so onerous," said EFF attorney Kit Walsh in a blog post. "If future generations are going to be able to understand and control their own machines, and to participate fully in making rather than simply consuming culture, Section 1201 has to go. "

Nintendo Shares Plunge on Pokemon Go Warning Nintendo shares plunged on Monday after it warned that the Pokemon Go mania sweeping the world would not translate into bumper profits, popping a dizzying rally that more than doubled the Japanese firm’s market value. The stock dived 17.7% to close at 23,220 YEN (Roughly 219 USD or 735,900 UGX) in response to a warning after markets closed Friday that the hugely popular smartphone game would have only a “limited” impact on the Japanese video game company’s bottom line. Markets had cheered the app’s global success as a great sign for Nintendo’s long-awaited move into the mobile games market. But analysts warned that the rally was overdone since the actual impact of the game on Nintendo’s finances would be moderate at best a point it confirmed on Friday. Nintendo is the creator of the Pokemon franchise but the game, released on July 5th, was developed and distributed by US-based Niantic, a spinoff of Google . Nintendo has invested in Niantic and owns about one-third of the Pokemon Company, which will get licensing fees for loaning out the cuddly monsters’ brand. Pokemon Go was seen as a shot in the arm to Nintendo which also created the Donkey Kong, Super Mario and Legend of Zelda brands after it abandoned a longstanding consoles-only policy and opened the door to licensing some of its characters for mobile game use. “I think Nintendo issued that statement because it was uneasy with how high the shares were rising,” said Hideki Yasuda, analyst at Ace Research Institute. “There has been a view that Nintendo cannot succeed in the smartphone business. The smartphone app has now been launched in more than 40 countries, but until last week Japan — where Nintendo started the mythical creature franchise 20 years ago — was kept waiting. Pokemon, short for “pocket monsters”, has been a constant in Japan since being launched as software in 1996 for Nintendo’s Game Boy console.
