This summer, both national acts and local favorites will take the stage through community events and Q Casino hosted concerts. All ages are welcome to experience the excitement at this outdoor venue. Community members can expect to enjoy a wide range of concerts from all genres from modern country to rock. The Back Waters Stage will be sponsoring two great community festivals this summer. Kickoff to Summer will be kicking off the summer series with a free show on Friday, May 25. Summer’s Last Blast 19 which is celebrating 19 years of raising money for area charities including FFA, the Boy Scouts, Dubuque County Fairgrounds and Sertoma. Summer’s Last Blast features the area’s best entertainment with free admission on Friday, August 24 and Saturday, August 25. The Back Waters Stage Summer Concert Series starts off with country rappers Colt Ford and Moonshine Bandits on Saturday, June 16. Colt Ford made an appearance in the Q Showroom last March to a sold out crowd. Ford has charted six times on the Hot Country Songs charts and co-wrote “Dirt Road Anthem,” a song later covered by Jason Aldean. On Thursday, August 9, the Back Waters Stage switches gears to modern rock with platinum recording artist, Seether. -

Considering that many real-world cultural practices are now migrating to virtual environments, the expression of mourning and bereavement is also being imported to the virtual world, by means of the so-called digital memorials, supported by increasingly new and complex technologies. In this paper, we undertake a literature review on real and digital memorials, as well as social networks. Then, through empirical observation of digital memorials in Brazil, we investigate if they have characteristics of the social web. Next, by means of an interaction test and a questionnaire, we analyze how users feel when interacting with digital memorials and their evaluation on the functionalities of those applications. Finally, we approach the difficulties found when studying this kind of tools and our perspectives for future works. Keywords: digital memorials, social web, social networks, death. 1 Introduction In modern societies, digital technologies are increasingly embedded in our daily activities, thus changing the way we see the world and act upon it. That leads real- world social practices to migrate into virtual environments and acquire new meanings, including cultural expressions triggered by someone’s death. Death is an unavoidable event which entails both sacred and profane rites, most often performed by bereaved people. Among those rites, we can find wakes, funerals, burials, requiem masses, prayers and the building of memorials. -

Oral histories are personal memories shared from the perspective of the narrator. By means of recorded interviews oral history documents collect spoken memories and personal commentaries of historical significance. These interviews are transcribed verbatim and minimally edited for accessibility. Greatest appreciation is gained when one can listen to an oral history aloud. Oral histories do not follow the standard language usage of the written word. Transcribed interviews are not edited to meet traditional writing standards; they are edited only for clarity and understanding. The hope of oral history is to capture the flavor of the narrator’s speech and convey the narrator’s feelings through the timbre and tempo of speech patterns. An oral history is more than a family tree with names of ancestors and their birth and death dates. Oral history is recorded personal memory, and that is its value. What it offers complements other forms of historical text, and does not always require historical corroboration. -

GENRE GAMES: EDWARD GOREY'S PLAY WITH GENERIC FORM BY EDEN LEE LACKNER A thesis submitted to the Victoria University of Wellington in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Victoria University of Wellington 2015 Page 1 of 216 Page 2 of 216 ABSTRACT Genre Games: Edward Gorey's Play with Generic Form This thesis examines Edward Gorey's play with form and content across five literary genres, how that play results in the style that has come to be known as the "Goreyesque" and how the Goreyesque has influenced later artists and writers. Gorey consistently places style ahead of thematic and moral considerations, removing the purpose of each genre to reveal what remains in its absence. In doing so, Gorey maps out the boundaries of each form, providing genre- and period-specific details that act as signposts to how his audience should approach each narrative. With these markers in place, Gorey's readers are thus made aware of which genre expectations rule each piece. These expectations, however, are undermined as Gorey removes the audience-understood literary endgame, so that the work appears in all respects to be an accurate representation of the chosen genre, yet is missing the central heart. Gorey's melodramas present scenarios in which deep familial loss and suffering are at the forefront of each narrative, yet as a result of the distance that Gorey places between the text and his readers, these works ultimately lack sentimentality. His Dickensian narratives, while populated with virtuous orphans and embittered, isolated men, lack moral pronouncements and just rewards, resulting in exceptionally bleak, nihilistic endings that provide little or no social commentary. -
