At the same time, demand for city services is increasing every year. This trajectory will be unsustainable in the long-term unless incomes rise, and City revenue from households and businesses increases. The EGS marks a departure from previous approaches to the economy by the City in that it adopts a ‘whole organisation’ approach. Previously, economic development had been relegated to a relatively small and under-resources department, which focussed its attention on a number of discrete projects.

The study provides insight into economic activity in Tygervalley, a wealthy business precinct in the northern suburbs of Cape Town, through a detailed analysis of the location of private investment and business.
