SUBSTITUTE GUIDELINES & EXPECTATIONS

Welcome! Thank you for choosing to substitute teach in Norwich. We have provided some guidelines to help ensure consistency and to clarify expectations. We value your time, effort and experience and hope your teaching assignments are pleasant and rewarding.

1. Please review Substitute Information Packet carefully before arriving at an assignment.

2. Please give careful consideration to your dress (in particular, NO denim, no flip-flops, no exposed midriffs or extremely short skirts, or low cut tops, etc.)

3. Substitutes should check in with the office upon arrival and complete and sign a time card. Arrive early (at least 15-20 minutes before student arrival is expected). This will give you time to review plans, assignments, and emergency procedures. Also check for duties, specials classes, and classroom routines (including fire escape routes). If you can not find plans, please call the office (ext. 100).

4. Follow the teacher’s plans as closely as possible. If one is provided, see substitute folder for special instructions. Leave a record of work accomplished.

5. Cell phones should be turned OFF when teaching and/or supervising students in any manner. Personal calls may be made during lunch or prep periods.

6. Look for classroom rules posted in the rooms. The middle schools have a behavior program in place (PBS), which you may see references to.

7. Be aware (through teacher’s plans) of any medical issues or modifications requiring special attention. A nearby teacher may be able to answer specific questions. If a child is ill or has an accident, notify the Principal, Assistant Principal or School Nurse immediately.

8. Introduce yourself to the class. Tell them a few things about yourself. (Some elementary school subs like to have students made name cards and tape them to their desks).

9. ESTABLISH RULES! Write rules/expectations on the board and be firm about them.

FOR STUDENTS: • No talking out until students raise their hands first. Explain the concept of RESPECT. • No students should be out of their seats without permission. Explain the need for classroom SAFETY.

NORWICH PUBLIC SCHOOLS

INAPPROPRIATE WEB SITES-RESPONSES

2013~2014 Norwich Public Schools Calendar Teachers should be monitoring students as they use computers in any educational setting. Even with content filtering in place, access to an inappropriate web site, even a pornographic site, may sometimes occur. No filtering solution is 100% effective. It is important to know how to respond to such an incident.

1. If it happens on a student computer, turn off the monitor immediately and move all students away from it.

2. Do not hesitate to unplug the computer. The primary goal is to prevent students from viewing the site. Do not try to shut down the computer through the operating system. Physically unplug the computer from the power source/outlet.

3. Contact your principal or supervisor immediately, who will contact Tech Repair.

4. Please take note of the computer on which this occurred, the date and time of the incident and the name of the objectionable site, if known. Also, a general description of what was being done will be helpful.

5. If this occurs on a teacher or staff computer, follow the same basic guidelines.

OPTIONS FOR FINGERPRINTING

There are two options for being fingerprinted for Norwich Public Schools. If you plan on working in other districts including Norwich, you can have fingerprinting done at LEARN, that provides a fingerprinting service. This option enables you to have your fingerprints shared with other districts and you pay a one time fee of $25.00.

If you want to work only for Norwich Public Schools, the other option is to go to your local police department. We provide you with the finger print card. The cost of this is $16.50.

NORWICH BOARD OF EDUCATION DIRECT DEPOSIT ENROLLMENT FORM

To enroll for Direct Deposit, simply fill out this form and give it to your payroll secretary. Attach a voided check for each checking account – not a deposit slip. If depositing to a savings account, ask your bank to give you the Routing/Transit Number for your account. It isn’t always the same as the number on a savings deposit slip. This will help insure that you are paid correctly.

Important! Please read and sign before completing and submitting. I hereby authorize the Norwich Board of Education to deposit any amounts owed me by initiating credit entries to my accounts at the financial institutions (bank) indicated on this form. Further, I authorize the bank to accept and to credit any credit entries indicated by the Norwich Board of Education to my accounts. In the event that the Norwich Board of Education deposits funds erroneously into my account, I authorize the Norwich Board of Education to debit my account for an amount not to exceed the original amount of the erroneous credit.

I understand that my deposit may not be credited to my account until 5:00 P.M. on the pay date indicated on the check voucher. I also understand that it is my responsibility to ensure that my wages are being deposited correctly into my account each pay day. I agree to hold Norwich Board of Education harmless from loss and to indemnify it, limited to the amount of the deposit.

This authorization is to remain in full force and effect until the Norwich Board of Education and the bank have received written notice from me of its termination in such time and in such manner as to afford the Norwich Board of Education and the bank reasonable opportunity to act on it.
