We have provided some guidelines to help ensure consistency and to clarify expectations. We value your time, effort and experience and hope your teaching assignments are pleasant and rewarding. 1. Please review Substitute Information Packet carefully before arriving at an assignment. 2. Please give careful consideration to your dress (in particular, NO denim, no flip-flops, no exposed midriffs or extremely short skirts, or low cut tops, etc.) 3. Substitutes should check in with the office upon arrival and complete and sign a time card. Arrive early (at least 15-20 minutes before student arrival is expected). This will give you time to review plans, assignments, and emergency procedures. Also check for duties, specials classes, and classroom routines (including fire escape routes). If you can not find plans, please call the office (ext. 100). 4. Follow the teacher’s plans as closely as possible. If one is provided, see substitute folder for special instructions. Leave a record of work accomplished. 5. Cell phones should be turned OFF when teaching and/or supervising students in any manner. Personal calls may be made during lunch or prep periods. 6. Look for classroom rules posted in the rooms. The middle schools have a behavior program in place (PBS), which you may see references to. 7. Be aware (through teacher’s plans) of any medical issues or modifications requiring special attention. A nearby teacher may be able to answer specific questions. If a child is ill or has an accident, notify the Principal, Assistant Principal or School Nurse immediately. 8. Introduce yourself to the class. Tell them a few things about yourself. (Some elementary school subs like to have students made name cards and tape them to their desks). 9. ESTABLISH RULES! Write rules/expectations on the board and be firm about them. FOR STUDENTS: • No talking out until students raise their hands first. Explain the concept of RESPECT. • No students should be out of their seats without permission. Explain the need for classroom SAFETY.
