Delmar thinks GREEN

For a while now Delmar has slowly been going green. Initially, we started with a paper recycling initiative in the Montreal office. Then we prepared a series of TV Commercials having an environmental theme, for airing on national television. Most recently, we have added a special environmental section to the company website which may be visited at www.delmarcargo.com/green. This area also includes links to organizations and places which we believe are acting to make a difference.

Delmar has recently introduced the ’Delmar Eco Bag ’which we hope is destined to replace some percentage of those plastic grocery bags which persist in our environment

We invite all members of the Delmar family to contribute their suggestions or ideas to our newsletter on how we as a company can act smarter in this time of heightened environmental awareness

Delmar International() Inc. office took part in The 7th Dalian International Walking Festival.

Delmar International (China) Inc. Dalian Branch has a staff of 12 with over 90% of these individuals having over 5 years experience in the freight forwarding sector. We are a young group, the average age being 34, so in our spare time, we organize hiking, ocean , picnics and so on. On May 23, 2009, we participated in the 7th Dalian International Walking Festival on Dalian Xinghai Square . The slogan was “National Fitness and go with the Olympics”, promoting a further development of walking activities among Dalian citizens.

It was a fun day, being our second time in joining the festival. We all set our wearing the same uniform, holding the banner with Delmar’s logo. Our route is called Binhailu as it follows the coast and full of beautiful scenes. The participants have become more and more numerous since the 1st year and it also includes many foreign walkers. Most of the foreigners are members of IML(http://www.imlwalking.org/) which is an international walking association. People come from Netherland, Scotland, Norway, Russia, Japan etc .There was a funny incident: when a Russian team sang the song "the Night of Moscow Suburb" while passing a Chinese team of elders, the Chinese team sang the song with them, but in Chinese! It was a cute scene which symbolizes the historic friendship between China and Russia.

As reported in the press, participants numbered around 200,000 that day. Our team finished the 10Km in 3 hours and we all felt comfortable at the walks end.

About Dalian

Dalian is located in province, China, at the southern tip of the Liaodong Peninsula. It has a population of 6.0 million, and is the only port city in the northeastern region of China, serving as a gateway to the provinces of Liaoning, Jilin and Heilongjiang. Dalian's nearest international neighbours are Japan and Korea, and it enjoys close commercial and cultural links with both countries.

With its beautiful coastal scenery and fresh ocean breezes, Dalian has developed as a major tourist destination and is known as the "Vancouver of China". It truly is one of China's most exceptional cities.

Dalian is northeastern China's premier city, and serves as the commercial hub for the region. It is the only port city in Liaoning province, and is linked to the major rail and road networks of the entire northeastern market and, via shipping lines, to major global ports. It is the gateway to the whole vast hinterland which stretches north to the Russian border, northwest to Mongolia, and east to Korea. Located near Chicago O’Hare airport, our Chicago office provides Delmar’s customers with a full range of freight services, both Import and Export, air and sea, as well as US Customs brokerage.

We currently have 11 staff members (10 full time + 1 part time) serving the needs of our clients. Of these, two are assigned to national services. Debora Diaz devotes her time to National Risk Management while Debbie Bennett spends most of her time on National Customs Compliance matters.

The Chicago office has experienced many changes since the turn of the year. With the addition of a new Managing Director and four other new staff members, the focus has been on integration of current staff with new staff while working hard to insure month-over-previous growth. Integration and training have been successful while growth continues. About Chicago

It is the third largest city in the USA. The Chicago land area (Chicago and its immediate surroundings) population exceeds 9.5 million people.

On June 4, 2008, Chicago was chosen as one of the four finalist cities to host the 2016 Summer Olympic Games and is the only American city on the list. Chicago is the home town of current President Barack Obama.

The best known nickname for Chicago is the “Windy City”. Contrary to popular opinion, the nickname does not refer to wind speeds. The nickname was earned in the late 1800’s by Chicagoans bragging about their city when competing to host the World’s Fair Columbian Exposition. Also know as “The City of Big Shoulders”, this nickname refers to the numerous skyscrapers which silhouette the sky.

The city earned the title of “City of the Year” in 2008 from GQ Magazine for contributions in architecture, literature and the arts. When it was incorporated in 1837, Chicago chose the motto “Urbs in Horto”, a Latin phrase which translates to English as “City in a Garden”. Chicago is well known for its wealth of public art. Works by Chagall, Picasso, Miro and Abakanowicz are on public display outdoors. Chicago’ Symphony Center is home to the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, recognized as one of the finest orchestras in the world. The Civic Opera House is home to the world-renowned Lyric Opera of Chicago. Blues, jazz and gospel music are all part of the city’s cultural heritage and remain vibrant to this day.

Chicago is home to O’Hare International Airport, the world’s busiest airport when ranked by aircraft movements and the second busiest by total passenger traffic. Vancouver staff (not all pictured here) say hi to all other Delmar family members.

Though we have a relatively small staff of 16 at present, we offer full door-to-door packages including imports, exports, customs clearance, by sea, air or truck.

Serving as the Pacific gateway for Canada to and from Asia, our office also services clients in the Western Canadian provinces of Alberta and Saskatchewan.

As the Chinese proverb states: Though the sparrow is small, it has all the organs it needs.

About Vancouver

For those who may not be aware, in recent years Vancouver has been ranked among the best places in the world to live in. The beautiful aerial view of downtown Vancouver with Canada Place, the cruise ship terminal and convention centre in the forefront and Stanley Park (North America’s third largest urban park) hugging the ocean, suffice to prove that the city is vibrant with both outdoor activities and international trade and tourism.

The Port of Vancouver is ranked second largest in tonnage on the North American west coast, behind Long Beach/Los Angeles in California.

Last but not least, Vancouverites are eagerly looking forward to welcoming the world for the 2010 Winter Olympic Games next February. A little known secret. The brand new Olympic Oval skating rink is located on the same street as our office!

Delmar CDL Campaign

The Montreal CDL office is located across from a Tim Horton's (coffee and donut) outlet. At times it seems that every other person is walking around with a tell tale cup which ends up in the garbage. May we suggest that all one has to do is to rinse the cup and then put it in one of the dedicated recycling boxes which targets paper and cardboard products.

There is so much more that we can be doing. We can at least start with this !

The future is now. We have to make a difference.

10 Ways to GO GREEN!

1. Save energy to save money.

o Set your thermostat a few degrees lower in the winter and a few degrees higher in the summer to save on heating and cooling costs. o Install compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs) when your older incandescent bulbs burn out. o Unplug appliances when you’re not using them. Or, use a “smart” power strip that senses when appliances are off and cuts “phantom” or “vampire” energy use. o Wash clothes in cold water whenever possible. As much as 85 percent of the energy used to machine-wash clothes goes to heating the water. o Use a drying rack or clothesline to save the energy otherwise used during machine drying. If you must use a dryer, consider adding dryer balls to cut drying time.

2. Save water to save money.

o Take shorter showers to reduce water use. This will lower your water and heating bills too. o Install a low- flow showerhead. They don’t cost much, and the water and energy savings can quickly pay back your investment. o Make sure you have a faucet aerator on each faucet. These inexpensive appliances conserve heat and water, while keeping water pressure high. o Plant drought -tolerant native plants in your garden. Many plants need minimal watering. Find out which occur naturally in your area. 3. Less gas = more money (and better health!). o Walk or bike to work. This saves on gas and parking costs while improving your cardiovascular health and reducing your risk of obesity. o Consider telecommuting if you live far from your work. Or move closer. Even if this means paying more rent, it could save you money in the long term. o Lobby your local government to increase spending on sidewalks and bike lanes. With little cost, these improvements can pay huge dividends in bettering your health and reducing traffic.

4. Eat smart. o If you eat meat, add one meatless meal a week. Meat costs a lot at the store-and it’s even more expensive when you consider the related environmental and health costs. o Buy locally raised, humane, and organic meat, eggs, and dairy whenever you can. Purchasing from local farmers keeps money in the local economy. o Watch videos about why local food and sustainable seafood are so great. o Whatever your diet, eat low on the food chain. This is especially true for seafood.

5. Skip the bottled water. o Use a water filter to purify tap water instead of buying bottled water. Not only is bottled water expensive, but it generates large amounts of container waste. o Bring a reusable water bottle, preferably aluminum rather than plastic, with you when traveling or at work.

6. Think before you buy. o Go online to find new or gently used secondhand products. Whether you’ve just moved or are looking to redecorate, consider a service like craigslist or FreeSharing to track down furniture, appliances, and other items cheaply or for free. o Check out garage sales, thrift stores, and consignment shops for clothing and other everyday items. o When making purchases, make sure you know what’s “Good Stuff” and what isn’t. o Watch a video about what happens when you buy things. Your purchases have a real impact, for better or worse.

7. Borrow instead of buying. o Borrow from libraries instead of buying personal books and movies. This saves money, not to mention the ink and paper that goes into printing new books. o Share power tools and other appliances. Get to know your neighbors while cutting down on the number of things cluttering your closet or garage.

8. Buy smart. o Buy in bulk. Purchasing food from bulk bins can save money and packaging. o Wear clothes that don’t need to be dry-cleaned. This saves money and cuts down on toxic chemical use. o Invest in high-quality, long-lasting products. You might pay more now, but you’ll be happy when you don’t have to replace items as frequently (and this means less waste!).

9. Keep electronics out of the trash. o Keep your cell phones, computers, and other electronics as long as possible. o Donate or recycle them responsibly when the time comes. E-waste contains mercury and other toxics and is a growing environmental problem. o Recycle your cell phone. o Ask your local government to set up an electronics recycling and hazardous waste collection event.

10. Make your own cleaning supplies. o The big secret: you can make very effective, non-toxic cleaning products whenever you need them. All you need are a few simple ingredients like baking soda, vinegar, lemon, and soap. o Making your own cleaning products saves money, time, and packaging-not to mention your indoor air quality. Car A/C

Please do not turn on the A/C as soon as you enter your car. Rather, open the windows for a few minutes and only then turn on the air -conditioning. Here's why: According to confirmed research, a car’s dashboard, seating and air freshener all emit benzene, a cancer causing toxin (carcinogen - take time to note the smell of overheated plastic in your car). In addition to cancer, benzene poisons ones bones, causes anemia and reduces white blood cells. Prolonged exposure will cause leukemia and increase the risk of other cancers. It may also cause miscarriage. Acceptable indoor benzene levels have been set at 50 mg per sq. ft. A car parked indoors with windows closed will generate 400 -800 mg of benzene. If parked outdoors under the sun at a temperature above 60 degrees F, a car’s benzene level goes up to 2000-4000 mg, 40 to 80 times the acceptable amount... People who enter their car with the windows closed, will inevitably inhale excessive amounts of this toxin. What's worse, it is extremely difficult for your body to expel this toxic stuff.

So friends especially when its warm outside, please open the windows and door of your car - give time for the car’s interior to air out and dispel the deadly stuff - before you enter. Thought: 'When someone shares something of value with you and you benefit from it, you have a moral obligation to share it with others.'

Food allergies/intolerances

I gave birth to a healthy 8lb 9 oz baby boy in Feb 2007. From birth my 4 month old was having up to 9 bowel movements a day and I had no idea why. Every time he would have a bowel movement it was like an explosion, right through his clothes. One day I had noticed blood in his stool and was very alarmed. I rushed to the pediatrician in tears for fear of what she might say. "Don't worry" she told me, "this is a symptom of food allergies/intolerances". This was the first I had heard of bovine protein intolerance. This intolerance usually goes hand in hand with soya allergy As time went on and new foods were introduced to him I soon realized there were many more foods his system could not tolerate including eggs, rice, beans, and many dairy products related to bovine milk. I have since learned that 65 % of kids outgrow this condition by the time they become 5 yrs old.

I have had to purchase a special formula for him and watch his food intake very carefully. Now that he is 2 and still loves his milk there is a product on the market that is neither a milk nor juice (but has a fruity taste and milky texture) that will give him the nutrients he is missing in the foods he cannot have.

Learning through each step of the way I found out about an association called L'association Quebecoise d'allergie Alimentaire that I contacted and they have a cook book for kids with intolerances. I have ordered a copy and eagerly await its arrival.

This has all been very new to me and the learning curve has painful for both my son and me. But this is just something I wanted to share with you.
