Stanley Kubrick 23 September 2017 - 14 January 2018 Stanley Kubrick the Exhibition 23 September 2017 - 14 January 2018 PRESS RELEASE STANLEY KUBRICK 23 SEPTEMBER 2017 - 14 JANUARY 2018 STANLEY KUBRICK THE EXHIBITION 23 SEPTEMBER 2017 - 14 JANUARY 2018 THE SHINING, DIRECTED BY STANLEY KUBRICK (1980; GB/UNITED STATES). STANLEY KUBRICK AND JACK NICHOLSON ON THE SET OF THE SHINING. © WARNER BROS. ENTERTAINMENT INC. STANLEY KUBRICK WAS RESPONSIBLE FOR A SUCCESSION OF EPOCH-MAKING FILM GEMS INCLUDING DR. STRANGELOVE, 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY, THE SHINING AND A CLOCKWORK ORANGE. WITH THIS AUTUMN’S MAJOR RETROSPECTIVE EXHIBITION AT KUNSTFORENINGEN GL STRAND, WHICH IS SUPPORTED BY NORDEA-FONDEN, KUBRICK FESTIVAL 2017 COMES TO THE HIGH POINTS ON THE PROGRAMME. THE EXHIBITION WILL BE AN EXCLUSIVE LOOK INSIDE THE VISIONARY MASTER DIRECTOR’S WORKING SPACE AND WILL TELL THE STORY OF KUBRICK’S UNUSUAL PATH INTO THE WORLD OF FILM AND WHAT IT WAS THAT MADE HIS FILMS GREAT ART. PRESS RELEASE STANLEY KUBRICK 23 SEPTEMBER 2017 - 14 JANUARY 2018 THE EXHIBITION AT KUNSTFORENINGEN GL STRAND It is with great pleasure that Kunstforeningen GL STRAND opens its doors in September for Stanley Kubrick – The Exhibition. This will be the first presentation in the Nordic countries of the exhibition, which has drawn large numbers of visitors all over the world – from cities like Paris, LA, Seoul, Amsterdam and now most recently Mexico City. The huge popularity of the exhibition bears witness to Kubrick’s enormous importance as a film director. Stanley Kubrick died suddenly in March 1999 – shortly before the premiere of his last work, Eyes Wide Shut. He left us not only an impressive legacy of films and unfinished projects, but also a huge collection of scripts, design sketches, notes, photographs, costumes, props and other unique objects from his many film shoots. The exhibition in Copenhagen is specially organized for GL STRAND with a focus on Kubrick’s visionary work within a variety of aesthetic fields and in terms of storytelling and technology. It zooms in on the broad spectrum of material, with all of Kubrick’s films sharing centre stage. Room by room, from the first to the third floor at GL STRAND, the story of Stanley Kubrick’s fantastic development is told – from successful photographer for LOOK magazine at the age of just 17 until his breakthrough in the world of film when he was 30 years old and the subsequent creation of one masterly film narrative after another. Throughout, the exhibition offers, besides knowledge of his many works, a close-up of Kubrick’s dedicated working methods and artistic processes as well as insight into his large unfinished projects, the major movies Napoleon and Aryan Papers as well as the science fiction film AI, which was later directed by Steven Spielberg. Stanley Kubrick was able to complete 17 films. He became famous for his innovation and uncompromisingly high standards, and his commitment to all the artistic aspects of film – from visual composition, lighting, technology, music to stage design and much else. Precisely this interest in all aspects of the artistic expression of film has made many of his films iconic masterpieces. The space helmet, the dresses of the twins, and the masks are some of the unique, recognizable visual characteristics that immediately evoke the atmosphere of films like 2001: A Space Odyssey, The Shining and Eyes Wide Shut. These items and other exclusive material are presented in the exhibition side by side with extracts from all Stanley Kubrick’s films. The material we have on loan, comprising approximately 600 elements, mainly comes from Stanley Kubrick’s personal archives and includes scripts with his own notes, processual material and documentation from the film productions, design models, visual sketches, original props and much more. Kubrick’s films are all unique visual narratives – often with highly controversial themes which in their time led in several cases to censorship or uproar, as the material in the exhibition also documents. Today his finely wrought works still constitute an important source of inspiration for film-makers and film-lovers all over the world, and several of Kubrick’s professional peers, including Martin Scorsese and Steven Spielberg as well as Danish film professionals, comment in the exhibition on Stanley Kubrick’s importance to them. Stanley Kubrick – The Exhibition in Copenhagen has been organized by Kunstforeningen GL STRAND and filmexpert Søren Høy as part of Kubrick Festival 2017 which is supported by Nordea-fonden. Original exhibition concept and exhibition tour is developed by senior curator Hans-Peter Reichmann and curator Tim Heptner from the Deutsches Filmmuseum, Frankfurt am Main. PRESS RELEASE STANLEY KUBRICK 23 SEPTEMBER 2017 - 14 JANUARY 2018 ABOUT STANLEY KUBRICK Stanley Kubrick (1928-1999) grew up in New York. At an early stage he developed an interest in photography and as a young man of 17 he was engaged as a documentary photographer for LOOK magazine. He was a self-taught film-maker and in his early twenties embarked on his film-making career by creating a series of short films. Kubrick’s significance as a film-maker can be attributed to the many masterpieces he created later. His work as a director has left us with some of the most memorable characters and scenes in the history of film, while with his passionate engagement in film and stage design, techniques, composition and music he elevated the medium to new heights. Hunter, and Elisa Pezzotta Ten years ago those immersed in researching the life and work of Stanley Kubrick (1928-1999) were gifted a unique opportunity for fresh insights into his films and production methods. In March 2007 the Kubrick Estate – supervised by his executive producer and brother-in-law, Jan Harlan – donated the director’s vast archive to the University of Arts London and instigated a new wave of scholarly study into the director. The Stanley Kubrick Archive comprises the accumulated material at Childwickbury, the Kubrick family home near St Albans, from which he largely worked and where he maintained a comprehensive record of his films’ production and marketing, collated and stored in boxes. The catalogue introduction online testifies to the sheer size of the Archive, which is stored on over 800 linear metres of shelving:1 The Archive includes draft and completed scripts, research materials such as books, magazines and location photographs.

  • The Philosophy of Stanley Kubrick the Philosophy of Popular Culture
THE PHILOSOPHY OF STANLEY KUBRICK The Philosophy of Popular Culture The books published in the Philosophy of Popular Culture series will illuminate and explore philosophical themes and ideas that occur in popular culture. The goal of this series is to demonstrate how philosophical inquiry has been reinvigo- rated by increased scholarly interest in the intersection of popular culture and philosophy, as well as to explore through philosophical analysis beloved modes of entertainment, such as movies, TV shows, and music. Philosophical con- cepts will be made accessible to the general reader through examples in popular culture. This series seeks to publish both established and emerging scholars who will engage a major area of popular culture for philosophical interpretation and examine the philosophical underpinnings of its themes. Eschewing ephemeral trends of philosophical and cultural theory, authors will establish and elaborate on connections between traditional philosophical ideas from important thinkers and the ever-expanding world of popular culture. Keller: Stanley Kubrick & The Evolution of Critical Consensus Stanley Kubrick’s greatness as an American director precedes him to such an extent that the virtues of his films are rarely subjected to critique. Even laymen who have not followed his career that scrupulously or may not recognize his name at all would still likely regard The Shining, 2001, and perhaps Dr. Strangelove as benchmarks of their respective genres. The influence of Kubrick on pop culture is undeniable, but his films have not always enjoyed the fine repute they cherish today, since they tended to leave the first critics who saw them divided and conflicted. Examining contemporary critiques of the director’s filmography reveals not only aspects of his technique that may have been overlooked but also insightful constants about the process of criticism and the development of consensus. One convenient way to categorize Kubrick’s works emphasizes their timeline and relationship to the Motion Picture Association of America.

  • ENGLISH DOSSIER DE PRESSE Stanley Kubrick
“If it can be written, or thought, it can be filmed. A director is a kind of idea and taste machine ; a movie is a series of creative and technical decisions, and it‘s the director‘s job to make the right decisions as frequently as possible.” EDITORIAL Our flagship exhibition in 2011 is devoted to Stanley Kubrick (from 23 March to 31 July). It is the first time that La Cinémathèque française hosts a travelling exhibition not initiated by our teams but by those of another institution. This Kubrick exhibition owes its existence to the Deutsches Filmmuseum in Frankfurt and to Hans- Peter Reichmann, its Curator, who designed it in 2004 in close collaboration with Christiane Kubrick, Jan Harlan and The Stanley Kubrick Archive in London. Since 2004, the exhibition has opened with success in several cities: Berlin, Zurich, Gand, Rome and Melbourne, before coming to the Cinémathèque. The archives of Stanley Kubrick contain numerous and precious working documents: scenarios, correspondences, research documents, photos of film shoots, costumes and accessories. The exhibition, film after film, includes the unfinished projects: the Napoleon that Kubrick hoped to direct and his project for a film on the death camps, Aryan Papers . These materials allow us to get backstage and better understand the narrative and technical intentions of the director who was a demigod of world cinema, a secret and fascinating figure. The exhibition will be installed on two floors of the Frank Gehry building, on the 5 th and 7 th storeys, owing to the bulk of the materials exhibited, including large-scale models and interactive digital installations.

Hunter† Elisa Pezzotta‡ Published: 4th December 2017 This special issue of Cinergie on the American director Stanley Kubrick (1928-1999) was inspired by a three- day conference, Stanley Kubrick: A Retrospective, held at De Montfort University, Leicester, UK in May 2016. The conference, convened by I.Q. Hunter and James Fenwick, brought together some of the leading Kubrick scholars to reflect on the methodological approaches taken towards Kubrick since the opening in 2007ofthe Stanley Kubrick Archive at the University of Arts London. The keynote speakers at the conference, Jan Harlan (Kubrick’s executive producer and brother-in-law), Robert Kolker, Nathan Abrams, and Peter Krämer, each discussed the various directions of study in the now vibrant field of Kubrick Studies. Harlan and Kolker took their audience on an aesthetic tour of Kubrick’s films,loc- ating his work firmly within the modernist tradition. Abrams, an expert in Jewish Studies as well asKubrick, decoded the Jewish influences on Kubrick as a New York intellectual with a Central European background. Krämer meanwhile focused on the production and industrial contexts of Kubrick’s career, explored a number of his unmade and abandoned projects, and situated his career as a director-producer working within and against the restrictions of the American film industry. These keynote addresses exemplified

He also suggested that had Kubrick survived into the 21st century he would not only have chosen TV as a medium to work in, he would also have contributed to the contemporary post-millennium zeitgeist of cinematic TV drama. There has been little news on the development of the project since and we are left to speculate how this cinematic spectacle eventually may (or may not) turn out on the “small screen”. Alison Castle’s monolithic edited collection of research and production material surrounding Napoleon4 gives some idea of the scale, ambition and problematic nature of re-purposing such a momen- tous project for television.

  • Kubrick by Kubrick (2020) Un Mosaico Di Materiali D'archivio Che Si Ritaglia Un Posto Nella Folta Schiera Di Ammiratori Del Maestro
