After attending Elementary School in Burgenland he completed an Upper Secondary School in Vienna, followed by studies of History and Political Science at the University of Vienna, from where he graduated with a Master of Arts degree in 1988. Darabos started his political career as a Municipal Adviser in Nikitsch/Burgenland. In 1998 he took office as Executive Secretary of the Social Democratic Party (SPÖ) in Burgenland. Since 2003 Norbert Darabos has been Secretary General of the Social Democratic Party of Austria and as of 2004 he has been Member of the Austrian Parliament. Norbert Darabos is married and father of two children. He has been a member of the CDH (Centre Démocrate Humaniste - Humanist Democratic Centre) since 1980 (at the time, the CDH was called the Christian Social Party). Born in Antwerp on December 6th, 1961 Family and Academic Background Marital status André Antoine was born into a farming family. Married to Anne Donckers In 1983, he was awarded a degree in law by the UCL (Université Catholique de Louvain – Catholic 2 children: Eline and Yves University of Louvain). In addition, he was awarded a Certificate in European Studies. Education Political Career Master of Business Economics, Antwerp University, graduated magna cum laude in 1984 André Antoine began his working life in 1980. He straightaway joined the party and became a councillor to the Presidency. In 1985, he entered Employment history the Belgian Parliament after the national elections of that year.     Portugal and Angola – the politics of a troubled media relationship Luís António Santos Communication and Society Research Centre, University of Minho [email protected] Keywords: Angola, Lusophony, media policy, political communication, Portugal, regulation In his last text of 2016, published on Christmas day, the editor of Angola’s official newspaper, Jornal de Angola, wrote a ‘message of harmony’ where he chose to focus on diplomatic relations with the former colonial power. José Ribeiro’s reading was clear: “Forty one years after independence the Portuguese elites still treat us impolitely as if we were their slaves” (Ribeiro, 2016). This posture would be reinforced precisely a week later in the first editorial of 2017: “Angola will not cease to be an independent country (…) no longer willing to accept mouldy neo-colonial impositions from abroad” (Ribeiro, 2017). Rather than fortuitous episodes these bellicose statements are a sign that a post- colonial reframing of the relationship between the two countries is – despite the relevance of economic ties1 – still far from attained but also a sign of how the media have become strategically relevant in this on-going political process. Following the definitive end of the civil war in in Angola in 2002 (with the death of Jonas Savimbi, and UNITA’s ensuing transformation into a political party) a small elite began to accumulate wealth in haste. Henderson © 2010 Brian Conlin ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT BRIAN CONLIN: Who’s on the Playing Field?: A Journalistic Series about Homosexuality in Sports (Under the direction of Jan Yopp, Dr. Richard Cole and Dr. Karla Henderson) The number of openly gay and lesbian athletes has boomed since the 1980s. The Gay Games is one example of this. The first Gay Games in 1982 had 1,300 participants. By 1994, the Gay Games drew 11,000 participants. In three articles, this master’s thesis examines various aspects of gays and lesbians in sports. The first article covers the Gay Games. It includes information about its supporters and protestors, a brief history and a look ahead to the upcoming Gay Games and beyond. The second article profiles a rugby player on the Carolina Kodiaks, one of two gay rugby teams in North Carolina. The third article examines how journalists, especially those in sports departments, cover LGBT issues. The thesis aims to explore the issues of the gay and lesbian community as they pursue sports and to show that LGBT issues in sport will become more important as society becomes more tolerant.

Inleiding Meer dan een halve eeuw tabaksontmoediging De strijd tegen het roken is er een van lange adem. Er zaten meer dan 30 jaar tussen het eerste rapport van de Gezondheidsraad over de gevaren van het roken (1957) en het moment dat parlement en regering de Tabakswet aannamen (1988). Die wet was een compromis tussen economie, ideologie en volksgezondheid, waarbij gezondheid aan het kortste eind trok. Pas in 2002 werd de Tabakswet aangepast en kwam ze volledig in dienst te staan van het beschermen van de volksgezondheid. Dit was de grote verdienste van Minister Els Borst, die daarbij de confrontatie met de tabaksindustrie niet had geschuwd.
