It had existed in some form in Greece and Constantinople since at least the turn of the century, but it is as difficult to define or get to the origins of as jazz or blues –genres with which (tenuous) comparisons are often made, not so much for the music as for its inspirations, themes and tone. Rembétika songs tell of illicit or frustrated love, drug addiction, police oppression, death – and their delivery tends to be resignation to the singer's lot, coupled with defiance of authority. Musically, rembétika is bound in with the bouzoúki – a long-necked, fretted lute derived, like the Turkish saz, from the Byzantine tambourás. -

The global fluidity and spiritual drought, insecurity and anxiety for the future and the prospect of mankind in terms of material O and mainly spiritual status define our time. The stalemate of our material civilisation is furthermore stoked by the recession into which our culture has entered. In this era of deadlock and largely unresolved socio-economic and political problems, emerging rapidly everywhere, man is obliged to search for optimism and internal tranquility in his spiritual roots which are found in classical Greece. Classical Greece is a spiritual oasis, especially for the unsatisfied and sometimes desperate man of the socially and politically developed western societies of our planet. Athens of Pericles, Aristotle, Plato, Aeschylus, Sophocles and Euripides, transmits messages of optimism and culture, as an inexhaustible source of inspiration and optimism, a cradle of values and ideas, guidance for life and confidence building for everyone and all. Marathon defined Greece’s position in the western world and modern civilisation in a perpetual dialectic of identification and feedback of European and Western identity. For this reason, the events of the European Cultural Centre of Delphi are dedicated this year in the historic anniversary of the 2,500 years from the Battle of Marathon. -
