A. concinnatum is circum- holarctic and known from the Caucasus, southern Siberia, Taimyr, Yakutia, Russian Far East (from Primorsky Territory to Chukotka), and was recorded also from Kola Peninsula. A. julaceum s. str. was not found among many herbarium collections from Russia that we studied. Mainly European, A. bavaricum was recently reported from Transbaikalia and is also newly found in Primorsky Territory and Verkhoyansk Range in Yakutia. Temperate Asian A. nitidum is newly found in Russia with a wide range, from Altai Mts. to Transbaikalia and also in the Far East, from Primorsky Territory to Com- mander Islands. Key to the identifiction of Anomobryum species in Russia, their descriptions, illustra- tions and distribution in the country are provided. Резюме Род Anomobryum представлен в России тремя видами. Циркумголарктический A. concinnatum распространен на Кавказе, юге Сибири, Тамыре, в Якутии и на российском Дальнем Востоке от Приморского края до Чукотки; он указывался также для Мурманской области. Присутствие A. julaceum s. str. в России не подтверждено гербарными коллекциями. Преимущественно европейский вид A. bavaricum, недавно выявленный в Забайкалье, обнаружен также в Якутии на Верхоянском хребте и в Приморском крае. Азиатский A. nitidum, ранее известный из Индии, Пакистана, Китая и Японии, выявлен на Алтае, в Забайкалье, а также на Дальнем Востоке от Приморского края до Командорских островов. In this paper, four genera of Bryaceae are added to the moss flora of Japan and I present information on 12 species of the family in Japan. A key to genera of Bryaceae in Japan is provided. Descriptions, specimens examined, distributions, notes and illustrations of 12 species are included. All collections are deposited in the Herbarium of the Hattori Botanical Laboratory (NICH). Anomobryum is closely related to the widespread genus Bryum and most bryologists (e.g. Smith 1978, Crum & Anderson 1981, Noguchi 1994, Eddy 1996) consider it a separate genus, although Ochi (1970, 1992) retained it as a subgenus within Bryum. In general Anomobryum is distinguished by its very small size, julaceous stems, and leaves with a weak costa and smooth margins, all features that it shares with the silver Bryum species, such as B. argenteum Hedw. At least two species of Anomobryum are also silver in colouration like B. argenteum and its allies.

D Joshi Abstract Bryums are diverse mosses distributed widely throughout the country. The species diversity of Bryaceae which were documented in various periods has been presented here. This paper includes 82 species including three subspecies and five varieties under seven genera of the total recorded 1150 bryofloral species in Nepal so far. Besides published records, the field survey of the first author within last five years has also been included here. Key words: Bryoflora, cosmopolitan, diversity, distribution, species Introduction Bryaceae is a large and cosmopolitan family which includes genera of considerable taxonomic difficulties. Basically, this family has interesting genera with odd gametophytic structures including acrocarpous stems and unicostate leaves with acute apex. This is a small to robust plant, commonly known as Hump moss, Silver moss, Thread moss, etc. It bears an erect solitary or branched stem. Leaves are arranged spirally and are usually small and distant below, equally spaced and occasionally form a rosette or structured differently. Gemmae are often present. Plant may be autoecious or dioecious, sometimes synoecious. Sporophytes generally bear pendulous capsules which are spherical and lightly papillose. Andrew (1935) suggested that the family might best be understood as a single large natural genus Bryum. Mitten (1859) has enumerated 52 species of Bryum including 17 species from Nepal. Noguchi et al. (1966) enumerated 13 species of Bryum which were collected by Dr. Yoda during the East Himalayan Expedition in 1963. The second work of Noguchi (1966) during the first phase of the East Himalaya Expedition in 1960 and 1963 came up with a list of 26 species and four varieties including 14 species from Nepal.

The knowledge of the bryophytes of Taiwan has represented a serious gap in the knowledge of eastern Asia. In the present treatment are included 276 species including varieties and subspecies belonging to eighty-nine genera and twenty-three families. The included mosses belong to the subclasses Sphagnidae, Andreaeidae, Tetraphidae, Polytrichidae, Buxbaumiidae and the majority of the acrocarpous Bryidae. Jaeg., Brachymenium acuminatum Harv., Brachymenium ptychothecium (Besch.) Ochi, Bryum argenteum Hedw., Bryum caespiticium L. ex Hedw., Bryum capillare L. ex Hedw., Bryum coronatum Schwaegr., Bryum paradoxum var. reflexifolium (Ochi) Ochi and Pohlia flexuosa Hook., growing on various habitats in Pachmarhi Biosphere Reserve (PBR), between altitude 800-1060 meters have been assessed. These mosses are being reported from the Pachmarhi Biosphere Reserve for the first time. Keywords : Bryaceae, Bryopsida, Pachmari. INTRODUCTION Bryaceae is one of the largest families of mosses (Bryopsida) with worldwide distribution of 13 genera and 850 species (Shaw 1985). It includes erect mosses with generally sparsely branched stems. There is extensive variation among the members of the family in leaf shape, shape of cells and capsules and development of capsule (from perfect to absent). The family was divided by Brotherus (1924) into 3 subfamilies viz. Orthodontioideae, Bryoideae and Melichhoferioideae. Andrews (1935) and Ochi (1959) have divided Bryaceae into two subfamilies: Bryoideae and Pohliodeae. Gangulee (1977) has followed the two subfamily classification and described 10 genera of the family from India. However, Lal (2005) has listed 11 genera under this family from India viz. Anomobryum Schimp., Bryum Hedw., Brachymenium Schwaegr. Epipterygeum Lindb., Leptobryum (B.S.G) Wilson, Mielichhobryum Srivastava, Mielichhoferia Nees & Hornsch, Mniobryum Limpr., Plagiobryum Lindb., Pohlia Hedw., Rhodobryum (Schimp.) Limpr.

Pohlia filiformis (Dicks.) Andrews Bryum julaceum (Schrad. ex P. Gaertn. B. Mey & Schreb. Division: Bryophyta Class: Bryopsida Order: Bryales Family: Bryaceae Taxonomic Note: There has been confusion over the current scientific name for this species and many names have referred to the same species. This species was first described as Bryum julaceum in 1802. In 1860 the species was transferred to Anomobryum filiforme. In 1935 Andrews combined both names into Pohlia filiformis (Grout 1935). Lawton (1971), Crum and Anderson (1981), and Ireland (1982) all used the name Pohlia filiformis. Sharp, Crum and Eckel (1994) chose to use a prior name, Bryum filiforme and Noguchi (1988) used Anomobryum filiforme. Based on the international rules of nomenclature, Crosby et al. (1999) placed all of the above names under the name Anomobryum julaceum. It is therefore important to understand the taxonomic history of this species when looking for references. Technical Description: Plants small, slender, julaceous, yellowish to pale-green, often whitish green, forming dense somewhat shiny tufts, occasionally branched, stems reddish; leaves ovate or oblong-ovate, obtuse, concave, not decurrent, .5 – 1.5 mm long; margins plane, entire or sometimes slightly serrate at the apex; costa strong, percurrent; upper median cells oblong-rhomboidal ± thick walled. Dioicous, seta up to 2 cm long, flexuose, sporophyte, 1–2 mm, oblong-cylindric, peristome double, endostome with appendiculate cilia, spores ~ 10 m. Distinctive characters: (1) broad obtuse, concave leaves, (2) somewhat shiny julaceous leaves.
