GAUGE:

16 sts = about 4 in. (10 cm) in Garter st (knit every row).

When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

STITCH EXPLANATION:

TECHNIQUE EXPLANATION Cable Cast On Make a slip knot on left needle. Knit 1 st through slip knot, but do not drop slip knot from left needle; transfer new st from right needle to left needle – 2 sts on left needle. *Insert right needle between first 2 sts on left needle; wrap yarn and pull through (as if knitting a st); transfer new st to left needle. Repeat from * for desired number of sts.

NOTES:

1. Scarfie is worked in 2 sections. 2. Both sections are worked in Garter st (knit every row), slipping the first st of every row to create a tidy edge. The designer slipped the first st as if to knit – but we encourage you to experiment and see whether you like that look or if you prefer to slip the first st as if to purl. 3. Sts for the second section are picked up along one side of the first section of the Scarfie. 4. A slit is created when picking up sts. To wear the Scarfie, pull one end through the slit.

SCARFIE First Section Cast on 16 sts. Work in Garter st (knit every row), slipping the first st of every row, until piece measures about 26 in. (66 cm) from beg. Bind off, leaving the final loop on your right hand needle. Beg at cast-on (opposite) end of First Section, place markers along long side of Scarf, 3 3/4 in. (9.5 cm) and 7 in. (18 cm) from cast-on end.

Second Section Notes: 1. For the second section, you will be picking up sts evenly spaced along the First Section of the Scarf. The numbers provided in the instructions are the number that the designer picked up – but every knitter's gauge is a bit different! If desired, pick up more or fewer sts than specified. 2. The markers define the portion of the First Section that will become the slit in the Scarf. You will cast on (rather than pick up) sts between the markers.

Slip the st on your right hand needle back to left hand needle and knit it. Working along adjoining long side of First Section, pick up and k77 sts evenly spaced to first marker; using Cable Cast On, cast on 12 sts; beg at next marker, pick up and k14 sts evenly spaced between marker and cast on end of First Section – 104 sts. Work in Garter st, slipping the first st of every row, until about 3 yd. (3 m) of yarn remains. Bind off.

FINISHING Weave in ends.
