The site is surrounded by railway lines and the ‘Chobham Farm’ residential development to the north. To the east, the site is bound by the A112 Angel Lane and railway lines running to and from Stratford Station. Beyond the railway lines are developments comprising student housing, residential, hotel and office uses. At the southern end of the site lies the Stratford Town Centre Link Bridge and Stratford Station. To the west, the site is bound by railway lines running to and from Stratford Station, an energy centre operated by Engie (the Engie Energy Centre), Montfichet Road and Westfield Stratford City Shopping Centre. The site location is shown on Figure 2 below. This document is a Non-Technical Summary of the findings of the Environmental Impact Assessment (also referred to as EIA) which are reported on in the August 2020 Environmental Statement. The original February 2019 Environmental Statement was prepared and submitted in support of the planning application and separate advertising consent application which were submitted by the Applicant in March 2019. The November 2019 Environmental Statement replaced the February 2019 Environmental Statement in its entirety. The Environmental Statement was updated to address design changes and comments on the application specifically relating to the Environmental Statement made by the London Legacy Development Corporation and other consultees. In addition, the Environmental Statement was updated to respond to the London Legacy Development Corporation’s request for further environmental information, which was made in August 2019. The August 2020 Environmental Statement replaces the November 2019 Environmental Statement in its entirety. The Environmental Statement has been updated to address further comments on the application specifically relating to the Environmental Statement made by the London Legacy Development Corporation and other consultees. The Environmental Statement has been updated to respond to the London Legacy Development Corporation’s request for further environmental information, which was made in May 2020. This Non-Technical Summary has been prepared to explain the development proposed, the likely significant beneficial and adverse environmental effects of the development and the measures proposed to protect the environment. The Environmental Impact Assessment has identified the effects that could result during the enabling and construction works and when the development is completed and in use. The Environmental Statement has been prepared in accordance with the relevant regulations relating to Environmental Impact Assessment. 1 MSG SPHERE Figure 1 The MSG Sphere Stratford Figure 2 Site Location 2 MSG SPHERE Purpose of the Environmental Impact Assessment and Non-Technical Summary Environmental Impact Assessment is a process that allows the beneficial and adverse (positive and negative) environmental effects of certain projects on the environment to be identified and reported upon. This is required by law and helps the local authority understand the environmental effects of a new development when they make their decision on whether to grant planning permission for it. Measures to protect the environment, otherwise known as ‘mitigation measures’ have also been identified as part of the Environmental Impact Assessment process. Trium Environmental Consulting LLP has undertaken the Environmental Impact Assessment for the development and has prepared the Environmental Statement and this Non-Technical Summary document. The Environmental Statement is made up of a number of documents and so this Non-Technical Summary provides an overview of the Environmental Statement in non-technical language. ASSESSMENT METHODOLOGY Scoping One of the first stages of the Environmental Impact Assessment process is referred to as ‘Scoping’. Scoping identifies the possible environmental effects of a development and the technical topics that need to be investigated further as part of the next stage of the Environmental

I argue that the relationship between fans and sports has become mediated by rituals of consumption in order to affirm a particular identity, similar to the ways that citizenship in America has become defined by one’s ability to consume under conditions of neoliberal capitalism. In this study, I examine how new sports stadiums are architecturally designed to attract upper income fans through the mobilization of spectacle and surveillance-based strategies such as Fan Code of Conducts. I also investigate the “sports gaming culture” that addresses advertising in sports video games and fantasy sports participation that both reinforce the burgeoning commercialism of sports while normalizing capitalism’s worldview. I also explore the area of licensed merchandise which is often used to seduce fans into consuming the sports brand by speaking the terms of consumer capitalism often naturalized in fan’s expectations in their engagement with sports. Finally, I address potential strategies of resistance that rely on a reassessment of the value of sports in American culture, predicated upon restoring citizens’ faith in public institutions that would simultaneously reclaim control of the sporting landscape from commercial entities exploiting them for profit.
