The project report details how focus groups were conducted to determine the interests of adults in family literacy classes. Ten categories of interest were identified and materials were collected or developed for inclusion in either part one, instructional materials on a low reading level for use with students, or part two, an annotated bibliography of additional resources for students and teachers, of the book. Findings indicated teachers found the materials a useful resource; students felt the materials addressed their needs or, in cases where more extensive information was sought, the materials provided good introductory information on a topic. The nine-page final report is accompanied by the parenting resource book which consists of two sections. Part1 contains materials that were collected or developed to respond to the interests expressed by students in seven family literacy classes. These brief materials--lists, articles, and fact sheets--are divided into 10 categories: child development, communication, discipline, formal education, health--adults, health--children, informal learning, parenting, pregnancy, safety, and values. Part 2 is an annotated bibliography of 50 resource materials. Ma serials were field tested and revised and the Parenting Resource Bookwas produced. Summary of Findings: The project met the goals ofcompiling and developing resources for use in family literacy classes. A large number of existingmaterials covering a wide range of topicswas found. Materials were developed to address topics for which materialswere not located. Comments: Teachers found the materialsa useful resource. Students felt that the materials addressed their needsor, in the cases where more extensive information was sought, the materials pi ovided good introductory informationon a topic. ProductsThe Parenting Resource Book consists oftwo sections, one with instructional materials for use with adult studentsand a second that lists additional materials for students and teachers.The following topics are covered:Child Development, Communication, Discipline, FormalEducation, Health Adults, Health - Childr Informal Learning, Parenting, Safety, Values.The second contains references for materials thatcan be used in family literacy programs or that provide additional information for family literacyteachers. Descriptors 1 INTRODUCTION PURPOSE The purpose of this project was todevelop a Parenting Resource Book of materials for use in familyand other adult basic and literacyeducation (ABLE) programs.Because family literacy isrelatively recent and is expanding, there are many teacherswho are new to this field. The needfor a resource book wasbased on the fact that these adulteducators might not familiar with materials available onparenting topics, it takes asignificant amount of time to identifyand obtain these materials, and,for some topics, materials need to be developed on alow reading level. The materials in the ParentingResource Book were collected or developed to address issues raisedby the adults in CFL familyliteracy classes. The book consists of two sections:1. a collection of instructionalmaterials on a low readinglevel for use with students, and 2. anannotated bibliography of additional materials for studentsand teachers. TIME FRAME This was a twelve month project,July 1993 through June 1994. STAFF AND KEY PERSONNEL Debra Cherkas began as the projectdirector and Rose Brandt completed the project.Other CFL educators whoparticipated in the project include Joanna Carty, Faith Green,Wendy Lovell, Pamela Pinder,Catherine De Long Smith, Monty Wilson, and RebeccaWolbach. AUDIENCE The immediate audience wassixty adult students in six CFLfamily literacy classes. The materials areappropriate for use by participantsin other family literacy programs statewide.In addition, ed-ocators of anyadults who are parents willbe able to use the resourcebook to support their educational services. Copiesof the materials will beprovided to the nine Regional Staff DevelopmentCenters. 2 BODY OF REPORT STATEMENT OF THEPROBLEM Understanding of theintergenerational nature of illiteracyhas led toan increase in thenumber of familyliteracy programs. While thereare materialson many parenting topicsavailable froma variety of sources, finding thesescattered resources is a challenge. Often educatorsand learners are unaware of whatexists and many of thematerials are written at a level whichmakes theinformation inaccessible to lowlevel readers. Asa result, staff with a background in ABLEwho become involvedin family literacy programs often investa great deal of time locating instructionalmaterials on parenting and finding qualitybackground materials to assistthem in developingtheir own understanding of andmaterials for parenting issues. The ParentingResource Book was developed asa comprehensivecollection of instructionalmaterials foruse with learners and background informationfor educatorson a range of basic parenting issues thatarise in classes, suchas communication, developmentalstages of children,home safety, health issues,values, formaleducation, and informal learningactivities, discipline. The first sectionof theresource book provides an extensive collectionof materials onparenting issues forlow level readers. Existing materialswere included when theywere brief, at an appropriate readinglevel, and permissionto reprint could beobtained. When necessary, materials ata lower reading levelwere created.
