We’d call it a slow month all around – a breather after New Year’s, and before things start to pick up again in February. There is plenty to keep Steve busy up in Edmonton this February! Online Photo Gallery Even though we have no new photos for Edmonton this month, past photos are fi nally starting to make their way online after I fi nished fi xing our photo management software. Actually, I took the chance to make other im- provements to it at the same time, which is why it took a whole month of concentration. Many of these newly posted photos have not yet been categorized, but they can be looked up by the date that they were taken. There’s still a lot of work to be done on the side of sorting and categorizing, but it has already been a chance for us to take a trip down memory lane. It is particularly poignant to see images of those that have since passed away, or that we don’t get to see anymore because they have moved away to other cities. But the great part is that we fi nally get to share it with everyone else that has been photographed for the magazine in the past. For every hit like Queer as Folk or Ugly Betty, there’s a Coupling or a failed Absolutely Fabulous pilot that no one ever sees. But the hit Australian comedy Kath & Kim (a sort of down-market Ab Fab) has proven popular on U.S. cable and is a cult hit with queer audiences, so an American remake is on the way. Its pedigree is solid: Cool indie star Selma Blair (A Dirty Shame) and Saturday Night Live alum Molly Shannon will play the off-kilter pair, and the pilot’s being directed by Freaks and Geeks’ Paul Feig. It is quite likely that the impetus for this policy change came from south of the border. In November, a hospital had reported that four organ transplant recipients, all of whom received organs from the same donor, tested positive for the HIV virus months after the transplants had taken place. It seemed that when the organs were fi rst ob- tained from the donor the test had been negative. The virus went undetected in its dormant form, and thus the trans- plant procedures were subsequently carried out. The Chicago incident highlighted an overlooked poten- tial risk within the organ transplant process, namely that HIV can have a dormant period. Health Canada’s solution to this was to enact a blanket policy to refuse organs from all men who have had sex with other men within the last 5 years, with more than one partner. Although other catego- ries of people are restricted from donating such as intrave- nous drug users, prostitutes, and people who have received a tattoo within the last 12 months, the restriction on gay men is far more severe and without any substantial evidence that they are a higher risk for transmitting HIV. What many see as an altruistic act – giving an irreplace- able part of oneself to help those in distress - may in fact be a matter of staving off a potential health related liability. It is hard to forget the tainted blood scandal in the nineteen eighties. Considered one of the darkest moments in Can- ada’s history the blood scandal continues to haunt health professionals today. The last thing any public health agency in Canada needs is a tainted organ scandal; it would prove none other than disastrous. The facts speak for themselves – that a transplant donor has a greater chance of dying waiting for an organ that they do of contracting HIV through a transplant. Over 250 people die each year in Canada waiting for transplants. With this

There is not an issue you raised in your letter which has not been discussed at a Board meeting this year. I do not understand your need to be insulting to either the Monarchs or the Board of Directors of the ISCCA. We are all volunteers, giving our time to give something back to our community. I’m sorry you feel that Conrad and Lonnie are an embar- rassment to our community. They are two of the hardest working monarchs I’ve seen in 14 years involvement with the ISCCA. Maybe they do focus on the fundraising aspect of their job over the social aspect, but again, at the end of the day, we are a fund raising organization, and they are in charge of the fundraising activities of the organization. The amount of money we raise may not matter to you in determining how successful a reign was, but it matters to the charities who receive the money we raise, and to their clients who benefi t from that money. And Conrad and Lonnie are having a very successful year. Fortunately, by the time this letter sees print, applica- tions for the position of Emperor and Empress XXXII will be available. If you are a member of our organization, and since you seem to feel that you can do a better job than this year’s Monarchs, I challenge you to put your name forward for the position. This is a relatively well know cause of action. There is a second possibility. Outside of the legal com- munity there is a little know cause of action that can pro- tect people in this situation. It is called: “Inducing Breach of Contract” or “Interference with Contractual Relations”. It involves the situation where person A, without legal jus- tifi cation, induces person B to break their contract with C. To succeed in an action for inducing breach of contract, the plaintiff must establish the following: (1) the existence of a valid contract; (2) awareness by the defendant of the existence of the contract; (3) breach of the contract caused by the defendant; (4) wrongful interference; and (5) dam- ages suffered by the plaintiff. For example, what if someone wanted to ruin my busi- ness and went to one of my customers with the purpose of getting them to fi re me. Let’s say, for example, my cus- tomer and I had a contract to supply apples for ten years and there was fi ve years left on the contract. My enemy goes to my customer and tells them a bunch of nasty stuff with the intention of getting my customer to break the con- tract. If my customer breaks the contract then I could sue my enemy for my damages (and possibly my customer). It is important to note that the “wrongful interference” portion of the claim does not require evidence of malice or ill will. It is suffi cient that the defendant knew or ought to have known that his or her conduct would interfere with my contract. If a breach of contract was intended, it is immaterial if the defendant’s motive was something other than harming the plaintiff. People cannot go around and try to get people fi red from their job or hurt their business for some wrongful purpose. Whether it is because your relationship breaks up or you are trying to get back at someone for something you think that they did to you. Messing with someone’s job or busi- ness is simply wrong and you can get into lots of trouble. To assist with the preparation of this article I used Rem-

The ratio of androphile (liking men) to gynophile (liking women) transsexuals might possibly be a 50/50 split - not taking into account bisexuals, as transwomen may be. But when crossdressers are factored into the equation, the percentage of those who are lesbian goes much higher. Surgery can often be an issue in relationships between transsexuals and admirers. For those at the extreme end of the transgender spectrum, pre- or non-op transsexuals may be completely uncomfortable with anything that involves touching or using the parts they were born with. This can include discomfort with their chest, if underdeveloped at the time of the encounter. For these, Gender Reassignment Surgery is quite often necessary for their peace of mind. If an admirer is specifi cally looking for a girl “with something extra,” he should be clear in the beginning about what he wants, and if the girl of his interest needs to have surgery, it’s probably best to keep looking. One Occasional Type of Admirer It occasionally happens – perhaps among ten to twenty percent of admirers – that the transfan is also trans-identi- fi ed, or questioning his (or her) own gender identity. These admirers are often looking for answers, or wishing to live vicariously through their partner, sometimes doing so until they come to a point where they are comfortable with the idea of transitioning themselves. Openness and honesty are far better policies. Sometimes with transfolk, trying to go through a transition when a partner is embarking on a similar (or opposite) transition presses a lot of hot-buttons of insecurity, so just because she’s trans doesn’t mean that she’s compatible or ready to live your transition at the same time as hers. The 4 Cardinal Rules of Dating T-Girls 1. She needs to be treated with respect. This includes respecting her as the gender to which she identifi es, and maintaining the correct pronouns. Refusing to do so or throwing inappropriate pronouns around in an argument often constitutes a deal-breaker. 2. Don’t make assumptions about her sexually or in terms of lifestyle and future plans. Be clear about what you’re looking for, but if she’s looking for something very different, pressing forward into a relationship is going to make one or both of you very unhappy. 3. Transwomen usually want the same things that women want – things like longer-term relationships, kindness, man- ners, courtesy, good humour, interesting conversation and similar interests. 4. Transwomen usually live in “stealth,” meaning that they don’t really want the world to know that they’re transgender. They are usually sensitive about having anything “out” them publicly (including loud conversation in public places), and would probably also rather be asked before you tell your friends. These are basics and generalizations, but hopefully, they can be of assistance for admirers in their quest for the per- fect partner. I do believe that trans admirers hold a place in our community, but they do need a bit of education at times, in order to fi nd it. Good luck! ”Mercedes Allen is a writer who blogs at http://dentedbluemercedes. wordpress.com/, has been featured on bilerico.com, PageOneQ and others, and has also developed the website at AlbertaTrans.org as a resource for transgender information and support.”

By Jason Clevett Community | Spotlight The Don’t Buy In Project is a diversity and hate- bias program provided by the Calgary Police Ser- vice for local junior and senior high schools. This free program delivers the skill development, infor- mation and resources needed to support an en- vironment that actively addresses issues of hate, bias and discrimination. “They did some focus groups with the Diversity Resources Unit with the Calgary Police Service and spoke to a group of youth and assessed where some gaps were and what was needed in the schools and lacking in services. It was at that point that I came on and we developed the program and website. That Cooke is booked for the entire school year is evidence enough of the project’s success. Aside from its availability to schools, the presentation is also available to community groups and other youth organizations. Cooke said that the support she has received from the Public and Catholic school board, as well as Christian schools, has blown her away. In addition to race, religion, gender, age and disability, a large component of the program deals with sexual orienta- tion. “I don’t specifi cally bring up the term homophobia, but I would say that the education, awareness and discussion that we have around sexual orientation assists with encouraging young people to ask questions and to know there is support out there. Still I couldn’t help but get wrapped up in this simple, captivating story. Not to mention the additional bonus that German Television is not squeamish about full frontal male nudity. Imagine a low-budget, hour and a half movie version of Oz. Young Dennis, played by Marcel Schlutt (no joke on that last name) is arrested for Credit Card Fraud, and thrown into a maximum security penitentiary. He has little choice but to a 2-person cell with Mike, but will the warden allow it? Although they brought in to Dennis, often providing warnings about the ways of his some of the shady business expected in a prison, they didn’t abusers. overdo the fear and violence that we’re used to seeing from But through the bars of his dreary cell, Dennis often notices shows like Oz and Prison Break. For instance, Dennis gets a well muscled black man (Mike Sale) doing manual labor in gang-raped by the rowdy boys, and Mike starts a fi ght with the yard. The man sees Dennis watching and stops to look their leader to defend his lover’s honour. Mike kicks a knife back. Instead of the hostile stare-down you might expect out of the leader’s hand, and obtains it after beating the man between jailbirds, they seem to form a silent bond. When out down. I was scared Mike was going to kill the guy, but instead in the yard, Dennis witnesses the man exerting some degree he avenges Dennis by slicing open the backside of the leader’s of authority over others around him, but he softens when pants and jamming his hand in. Sure enough, Dennis stays cells. In a way this gave the true to his promise and sneaks over to visit Mike instead of fi lm an honesty seldom seen going out into the yard. Mike’s cell is homey – a lot more so in the overly censored shows than his own, especially since the man has an electric heating on mainstream television. gaycalgary and edmonton magazine #52, February 2008 49 phol (played by Asanee Suwan), but how on earth did a young boy who always felt like he was a girl get caught up in such a rough sport? We go all the way back to Nong Toom’s childhood, where tragedy strikes – his mom is put in jail for a legal infraction with their house, and his dad suffers a fall and breaks both ankles. The young boy has to provide for his stricken family while juggling obligations to the Buddhist Monastery. While visiting his mother, he crosses paths with a transsexual wom- an and realizes his own feeling that he is the wrong gender. As he grows up, he crosses paths with the sport of Kick- boxing and soon discovers he has a natural talent for it. He is able to continue supporting his family by competing and winning the generous payout from matches. But he continues to feel very different from the other boys in his training camp. He is too shy to shower with them, and often hides in the bathroom to try on makeup and lipstick. He fi nds a number of female friends that understand his feelings, including the wife of Pi Chart (Sorapong Chatri), his kickboxing instructor. Pi Chart walks in on them as the two are trying on makeup in front of the mirror, and he is sur- prisingly accepting of it. Soon, with the encouragement of Pi Chart, Toom is wearing makeup in the boxing ring. At fi rst the audience laughs, but his opponents underestimate him. He becomes renowned for his fi ghting skill and his unorthodox practice. But he keeps having fl eeting glances of a woman – an externalization of his desired identity. As Toom ascends the championship ladder, promoter Pi Mo (Somsak Tuangmukda) markets Toom’s gender bending as a gimmick, but in an interview with the press, Toom fi nally re- veals that once his family is on stable ground, he will use his winnings to have a sex change operation. In the meantime, he begins to take female hormones which sap his strength in the ring, and he descends into further confusion about his identity. It is a very well done fi lm, with an intricate storyline. It has funny and poignant moments that are mixed in with lots of ac- tion and triumph from the kickboxing matches. I can’t think of anyone that wouldn’t benefi t from seeing this fi lm. Movie rental courtesy of Zip.ca.
