SOLDIER FIELD TRANSFORMS INTO ICE ARENA

CHICAGO, ILLINOIS This week, ’s Soldier Field is transforming from an NFL football stadium into a professional-quality arena for the “Office Max Hockey City Classic”, featuring four of the nation’s premier men’s collegiate ice hockey programs. The puck drops Sunday, February 17 at noon CT as Notre Dame faces off against University, followed immediately by Minnesota vs. Wisconsin.

Installation of the 17,000-square foot began Monday, with ice-making a 24-hour-a-day process, continuing for 10-days. Over 30-miles of cooling tubes have been rolled-out on an insulated deck platform and dasher boards erected. A 400-ton portable refrigeration system sits outside the stadium, and is connected to the rink with rubber hoses. 4,000-gallons of anti-freeze will circulate through the rink piping system at over 1000-gallons per minute, going back-and-forth to the refrigeration trailer.

Ice Rink Events is the Texas-based company contracted to do the installation. The company helped the National Hockey League create the first “Winter Classic” rink for the 2008 event at Buffalo’s Ralph Wilson Stadium, and has produced outdoor classic-type rinks for events in Green Bay’s Lambeau Field, Wisconsin’s Camp Randall Stadium, and Cleveland’s Progressive Field. Ice Rink Events led the installation of “The Big Chill at The Big House”, staged in University of Michigan’s massive football stadium in 2010, with more than 113,000-fans in attendance, still the world-record for a hockey game.

A prolific installer of temporary ice rink venues, Ice Rink Events this week is installing or operating four high-profile ice rinks at one time, in three different cities. Besides the Chicago game, the company has built ice rinks for the American Hockey League’s “Outdoor Classic” in Hershey (PA), and in Omaha for the U.S. Figure Skating Championships and an outdoor hockey event to be staged at TD Ameritrade Park.

According to Ice Rink Events’ Kevin Gift, “The weather this week is the challenge, with the sub-freezing temperatures, keeping the 17,000-gallons of water that we need to get on this rink liquid before we freeze it!” Gift, of Medina, Ohio, is one of the nation’s most experienced rink builders, travelling coast-to-coast and around the world creating ice rinks and holiday events in such markets as Cleveland, Orlando, Tampa, Houston, , and , B.C. Kevin and his Ohio-based crew install the Olympic-sized “mega rink” at Mexico City’s Zocalo square each season, where as many as 600,000 skaters take to the ice each season.

Ice Rink Events is a leading designer, manufacturer, installer, and owner/operator of permanent, temporary, portable, and special-use ice skating rinks, world-wide. For more information about the company, click on www.IceRinkEvents.com.
