PHOTOGRAPHING THE HOLY SHROUD DURING THE 1898 EXHIBITION by Luigi FOSSATI - Historian (from “Collegamento pro Sindone”- September/October 1994) The 1898 Exhibition shows in Shroud’s history an important and decisive turning-point in order to this Object knowledge. Although until then the Shroud has been considered only on a devotional plane, since that year, after the discovery of the wrapped body’s somatic imprints negativity, it became object of examination on a scientific plane. Historians, archaeologists, exegetes, critics of art, physicians, biologists began to study it under the most different points of view. The Exhibition was allowed by the House of Savoy to solemnize the wedding between Crown Prince Vittorio Emanuele (III) and Montenegrin Princess Elena Petrovich-Niegos and it was inserted in ampler civic and religious manifestations celebrated in Italy and in Turin. The idea to celebrate the Albertino Statute’s 50th anniversary with a solemn manifestation rose during autumn 1893 inside the society “La Libertà”, one of the most meritorious provident and work increase assotiation. In coincidence with this anniversary the Turin Church wanted to remind fortunate centenaries of the Piedmontese religious life: the fourth centenary of the present cathedral dedicated to St. John the Baptist’s consecration and the third centenary of two meritorious brotherhoods’ constitution, the Holy Shroud and Blessed Virgo of the Graces’ one and the St. Rocco’s one, that were commemorated with a Show of Sacred Art to which a Show of Missions and Catholic activities were added. The Convitto Ecclesiastico "Where One Learnt to be a Priest" Arthur J. Lenti, SOB Introduction In his quasi-autobiographical Memoirs of the Oratory, Don Bosco speaks of the offers of gainful employment made to him after his ordination in 1841. He consulted his great benefactor and friend, Fr. Joseph Cafasso. Without a moment's hesitation, this is what [Fr. Cafasso] said: "You need to study moral theology and homiletics. For the present forget all these offers and come to the Convitto." I willingly followed his wise advice; on November 3, 1841, I entered the Convitto.1 Don Bosco then goes on to describe the nature and purpose of this institution. It was a kind of 'finishing school' where (he says) "one learnt to be a priest." He speaks of the people who were responsible for it and for its program; and he makes specific reference to the ideological context and the matrix of thought which had determined its founding. Most Salesians, familiar as they are with passages on the subject from Don Bosco's own pen and from biographies of St. Joseph Cafasso, are acquainted with the name, and to some extent also with the nature and purpose of this institution. Andrea Carlo Ferrari, arcivescovo 4 del capoluogo lombardo dal 1894 al 1921, che visitò tutte le parrocchie per ben quattro volte. Il periodo dell’inizio del ’900 è un tempo di ripresa della vita religiosa nella città, dopo le dicili 4 vicende dei secc. XVIII-XIX (soppressioni del giuseppinismo, della Rivoluzione Francese, dell’epoca napoleonica e di quella postrisorgimentale). Nella trattazione sono anche oerti un C. Pioppi panorama delle numerose attività sociali promosse da tali istituti religiosi, e la presentazione del contesto sociale, economico, politico ed ecclesiale della città. Insigne studioso di storia del cristianesimo, laureatosi nel 1947 in Letteratura Cristiana Antica presso l’Università di Torino con una tesi su Taziano, è stato allievo di Michele Pellegrino e Augusto Rostagni. Borsista all’Istituto Croce nel 1948 - 1949, negli anni 1950 - 1953 ha studiato all’École Pratique des Hautes Études di Parigi, allievo di Henri-Irénée Marrou, maestro per lui di studio e di vita, e di Henri-Charles Puech, illustre specialista di patristica e di gnosticismo. Ritornato in Italia è stato assistente di ruolo della cattedra di Letteratura Latina negli anni 1953 - 1963. Conseguita la libera docenza, a partire dall’anno accademico 1963 - 1964, è diventato professore prima straordinario e poi ordinario di Storia del Cristianesimo presso la Facoltà di Lettere e Filosofia di Torino, ricoprendo anche l’incarico di docente di Storia delle Religioni negli anni 1965 - 1973. -

ANNAROSA DORDONI Alle radici della «santità sociale» piemontese dell’Ottocento: l’eredità spirituale di Sebastiano Valfrè Riesce difficile esprimere il zelo che egli mostrò per la salute delle anime. Soccorreva per le strade, per le contrade, pene- trava nelle botteghe, nelle case raccogliendo i fanciulli, spe- cialmente i più cattivi ed ignoranti, i quali radunava insieme, li istruiva col catechismo, loro additava la strada della salute. Quest’ultimo uffizio di catechista esercitò per lo spa- zio di quarant’anni.
