Su enfoque en el desarrollo de todas las etapas de la investigación de campo ha marcado la formación de numerosas generaciones de biólogos costarricenses y extranjeros que han contribuido al desarrollo académico y científico de sus respectivos países. En esta XII edición se mantiene la visión inicial con la cual este curso fue creado, exponer al estudiante al diseño, ejecución, análisis y divulgación de investigación de campo en las diferentes áreas de la biología tropical. A la fecha 194 estudiantes, 15 asistentes, 48 profesores y 9 coordinadores han colaborado en todas las ediciones del curso. En esta ocasión 15 estudiantes de pregrado y posgrado participaron de esta experiencia, en la cual se contó también con la participación de igual número de profesores. Este año el curso volvió en su totalidad a la ciudad de Golfito, un lugar privilegiado por la convergencia de diferentes ambientes que permiten una amplia oferta de posibilidades de trabajo. Los proyectos desarrollados en esta edición incluyen ambientes marinos, dulceacuícolas y terrestres, que contemplan desde la comunidad del fitoplancton en la columna de agua, hasta la comunidad de árboles del bosque lluvioso. Trabajos enfocados en comportamiento, alometría, poblaciones, bioacústica, comunidades, interacciones mutualistas y antagonistas, uso e influencia del ambiente en diversos grupos, entre otros temas fueron desarrollados durante el curso. Con esto se cumplió uno de sus principales objetivos, el entrenamiento de campo en la investigación en diversidad de temas y ambientes. Este curso solo fue posible gracias al apoyo de un gran número de personas, tanto visibles como anónimas en el área académica y administrativa que contribuyen al éxito de cada edición. A todos y todas las gracias por su indispensable colaboración. Agradecemos especialmente a Gustavo Gutiérrez, Viviana Lang y toda la Escuela de Biología por apoyar y financiar gran parte de los costos del curso. En el presente estudio se determinó la composición de fitoplancton en tres sitios de la Bahía de Golfito, en los cuales se identificaron y contabilizaron los géneros por sitio de estudio. Se realizaron análisis bajo el índice de similitud de Bray- Curtis para evaluar la composición de fitoplancton entre y dentro de los sitios. En total para el estudio se contabilizaron 1575 individuos, pertenecientes a 40 géneros, siendo Navicula el género más común, encontrado dentro de las muestras de los tres sitios, seguido de Prorocentrum. Specifcally, we test if Cyrtognatha biogeographic history is consistent with an ancient vicariant scenario (the GAARlandia landbridge hypothesis) or overwater dispersal. We reconstructed a species level phylogeny based on one mitochondrial (COI) and one nuclear (28S) marker. We then used this topology to constrain a time-calibrated mtDNA phylogeny, for subsequent biogeographical analyses in BioGeoBEARS of over 100 originally sampled Cyrtognatha individuals, using models with and without a founder event parameter. Our results suggest a radiation of Caribbean Cyrtognatha, containing 11 to 14 species that are exclusively single island endemics. Although biogeographic reconstructions cannot refute a vicariant origin of the Caribbean clade, possibly an artifact of sparse outgroup availability, they indicate timing of colonization that is much too recent for GAARlandia to have played a role. Instead, an overwater colonization to the Caribbean in mid-Miocene better explains the data. From Hispaniola, Cyrtognatha subsequently dispersed to, and diversifed on, the other islands of the Greater, and Lesser Antilles. Within the constraints of our island system and data, a model that omits the founder event parameter from biogeographic analysis is less suitable than the equivalent model with a founder event.

With the exception of these two species, the genus Maymena is endemic to the western hemisphere, and new evidence presented here supports the creation of a new genus for the Chinese species, which we name Yamaneta gen. nov. The male of Y. kehen is described for the first time. Detailed illustrations of the habitus, male palps and epigyne are provided for these two species, as well as descriptions of their webs.

ABSTRACT Specimens of Comaroma simonii Bertkau from Styria (Austria) were kept in the laboratory in order to investigate biological details. Egg sacs were built at the end of June and the beginning of July. They were white-coloured, round in shape with a diameter of 1.47 mm on the average (n = 5) and were attached to vertical surfaces. Each egg sac contained three eggs of pale yellow colour. Normally the egg sac is protected by a silken funnel ending in a tube that points toward the ground underneath. It is assumed that this functions as a means of protection against egg predators and parasites. Spiderlings hatched after 27 days; they most probably moulted twice before leaving the cocoon on the 35th day. They built webs closely resembling those of the adults. Juveniles and sub adults showed no sclerotization of the body and were rarely found in the natural.habitat. There, vertical and horizontal migrations probably occur as a means of avoiding wetness or drying out, respectively. The sex ratio of all collected specimens was 98 females to 54 males. C. simonii is regarded as a 'k-strategist' and an eurychronous species. INTRODUCTION The biology of Anapidae is insufficiently known. For example, data on egg sacs or juveniles are fragmentary (Hickman 1938, 1943; Platnick & Shadab 1978; Coddington 1986; Eberhard 1987).

Such protocols set rules for the orderly acquisition of samples to estimate community parameters and to establish comparisons between areas. These methods have been tested worldwide, providing useful data for inventory planning and optimal sampling allocation efforts. The taxonomic counterpart of biodiversity inventories has received considerably less attention. Species lists and their relative abundances are the only link between the community parameters resulting from a biotic inventory and the biology of the species that live there. However, this connection is lost or speculative at best for species only partially identified (e. g., to genus but not to species). This link is particularly important for diverse tropical regions were many taxa are undescribed or little known such as spiders. One approach to this problem has been the development of biodiversity inventory websites that document the morphology of the species with digital images organized as standard views.

Only a few vertebrate groups such as the Heroine cichlids, distributed from South America to the Rio Grande in North America, are found both north and south of the Neovolcanic Plateau. To better understand the geography and temporal diversification of cichlids at this geologic boundary, we used mitochondrial DNA sequences of the cy- tochrome b (cyt b) gene to reconstruct the relationships of 52 of the approximately 80 species of Heroine cichlids in Mesoamerica. Our analysis suggests several cichlids in South America should be considered as part of the Mesoamerican Heroine clade because they and the cichlids north of the Isthmus of Panama are clearly supported as monophyletic with respect to all other Neotropical cichlids. We also recovered a group containing species in Paratheraps + Paraneetroplus + Vieja as the sister clade to Herichthys. Herichthys is the only cichlid clade north of the Mexican Plateau and it is monophyletic.
