Departmental Outstanding Students

Art Department Melissa Lopez I have known Melissa for three years and can easily say that her leadership paired with her organizational skills and creative imagination defines her as the Outstanding Senior of the Art Department. Having taken six art classes here, I have watched her personal style evolve in multiple media from digital to computer animation to painting and drawing. She is currently in the Advanced Placement Studio Art class in which she prepares a portfolio of 24 pieces of art. The drawing, painting, animation and computer art techniques that she has learned combined with her creative and artistic decisions produce excellent and thoughtful projects demonstrating a breadth of media. Mr. Epple comments that “Melissa is extremely creative, highly skilled, and hardworking. She is also driven to make art on her own. I always see her working either on school assignments or other self-directed art projects.” Art Honor Society, Winter Guard and earning many honors for her art are some of her accomplishments. Melissa won "Best in Show" at last year's art show for an amazing animation, earned the Excellence Ribbon at the Elmhurst College Art Show and won the After Hours Film Festival where her film was shown at the Tivoli Theater. Melissa has been very successful combining her technical training and creative skills in art with her industrious work ethic and will be successful in her future artistic pursuits.

Career & Technical Education Department Daniel Kania The Outstanding Senior representing CTE is Daniel Kania. Dan has demonstrated excellence in a multitude of CTE courses, clubs, and activities including: Honors Accounting 1 & 2, Honors Business Law, Honors Sports & Entertainment Marketing, Keyboarding, Intro to Business and Speech Tech. Dan is the leader of the CTE/COD Leadership Academy. Dan volunteers as both a New Beginnings leader and as a Mentor. As an Eagle Scout, Dan has planned and organized the restoration of volleyball courts, landscaping, and painting at the York Center Park District, as well as earning the Order of the Arrow Award. Dan is a member of the National Honor Society, National English Honor Society, Civitas Honor Society and Math Honor Society. Dan is a golfer and works at the Butterfield Country Club. Dan’s dedication, leadership, friendliness and overall attitude toward everyone made him the perfect CTE candidate for this award. Dan is mature, reliable, personable, respectful, thoughtful, kind, and a hard worker. He is involved in a great number of activities and organizations, and does his absolute best to meet the responsibilities for every event, activity, and meeting. Dan plans to major in Software Engineering at Marquette University.

English Department Meghan Foley The English Department has selected Meghan Foley as their Outstanding Senior. Meghan’s 9 Honors teacher, Mrs. Tara Murphy stated, that she “kindly, thoughtfully, and passionately approaches every aspect of her life. This includes her education, her relationships, her music and beyond.” Mrs. Lisa Cuscaden, Meghan’s 10 Honors teacher, echoes these sentiments, “Meghan is a gifted, creative, artistic, enthusiastic young woman. Her positive, lively attitude was simply infectious.” Meghan’s talents are evident in her skills as a writer, reader and critical thinker. She embodies so much of what the Department underscores in our curricula. As Mr. Brett Blair, her AP English Literature teacher recognizes, she “is the epitome of talented and humble. There seems to be no end to her talent, for in the classroom, she is a gifted thinker and writer. Her writing often is poetic, which naturally enhances her techniques in her prose writing.” Her writing often was used as model essays over the course of her high school career. Meghan has been an instrumental part of the Willowbrook community. Her most treasured organizations were writing for the Skyline and competing in Mock Trial. Also, many may remember her as the “Fan Favorite” for Suburban Chicago’s Got Talent. She has been in several honor societies and played Badminton. In essence, Meghan felt that her “English classes have been challenging […] the AP program has opened my mind to classics. I’m a better writer without a doubt.” The English Department is proud of Meghan’s creative and profound talents in our program.

Learning Services Lorenzo Delgado The Learning Services team is honored to announce Lorenzo Delgado as the Outstanding Senior for 2015-2016. Lorenzo has established himself as a leader in the classroom and in the building as a whole. He maintains a positive attitude throughout each day, and is a role model for younger students. In addition to his studies at Willowbrook, Lorenzo works a part-time job, a responsibility that never keeps him from coming to school and giving the day his full effort. Peg Wealton said the following to describe Lorenzo: “Lorenzo is always pleasant and always hard-working -- and how many of us can claim to be both those things all the time? He has done a million little things over his years here that make the day better for everyone around him. It will be difficult to adjust to his absence next year, but we say goodbye with every confidence that he will do well wherever life leads him.” The Learning Services Department looks forward to Lorenzo’s certain future success.

Mathematics Department Galen Bergsten Galen Bergsten is a Mathematician. He has taken all the available AP courses in mathematics, starting with AP Calculus BC and AP Computer Science his junior year. He continued by taking AP Statistics his senior year. He has excelled in all of his mathematics classes and continues to look for mathematical challenges. Galen has been an integral member of the Math Team and represented Willowbrook High School at the ICTM State Math Competition this May. He also was part of a State Qualifying team last year. Galen adds insight to any class he is in through well thought out questions and a desire to learn at the highest level. He is a student who will go above and beyond on any assignment he receives extending ideas and deriving new ones. He will continue to use all of the mathematics knowledge he has learned within his future career.

Music Department Dominic Giase Dominic Giase is the Outstanding Music Student of 2015-16. Dominic was chosen for his many contributions to the music department. He participates in many of the ensembles: pep band, marching band, wind ensemble, concert choir, show choir, show choir combo, full orchestra and musical pit orchestra. Dominic Giase was the Drum-line captain for the past two years. As a percussionist he has earned several awards at the IHSA Solo and Ensemble contest and performed at an extremely high level in performance at Willowbrook High School. Dominic's leadership capabilities are truly inspiring. He works with younger students on a daily basis and serves as a right hand man in percussion methods. Dominic organizes and runs practices for the drum-line and has earned the respect of his peers by being kind and knowledgeable. Dominic is also a very fine choral singer and a leader the in tenor section. This year he was selected to sing with the ILMEA District IX All-District Choir as a Tenor II. Dominic has also played percussion for many choir concerts and received an outstanding rating for his vocal duet at IHSA Solo & Ensemble Contest. Dominic always has a great attitude, is well prepared for rehearsals and is very responsible. We are proud to have Dominic represent the Music Department!

Physical Education Department Matthew Rowland The Physical Education Department is proud to announce that Matthew Rowland has been selected as our Outstanding Senior. Matt has been enrolled in IFIT for the past 2 years and has been an outstanding Physical Education student during his entire Willowbrook career. Matt has been a great student-athlete who has trained tremendously hard to become the best he can be and has inspired others at Willowbrook High School to reach their potential as well. Matt’s commitment and hard work over his 4-year career has paid off as Matt is the 2015-2016 Illinois State Wrestling Champion at the 170 pound weight class. Matt’s positive attitude, ability to work well with others, and tenacity in everything he does has made him a role model for his teammates and classmates. This fall, Matt will be attending the University of North Carolina on an athletic scholarship to participate in wrestling and earn a degree in business.

Science Department Stephaney Cheng The Science Department is pleased to announce Stephaney Cheng as its Outstanding Senior for 2015-16. Stephaney is highly regarded in the Science Department. Mr. John Fouser is very complimentary of her, “Stephaney is a dedicated student who works hard to understand the material.” According to Mr. Eastman Tiu, “Stephaney’s greatest strengths are her consistency of excellence and her congeniality. She always performs at the highest levels. She is one of the nicest and most sincere students from the class of 2016. We are proud to have her represent the Science Department.” Mrs. Megan Graham adds, “Stephaney’s strong science background is an asset to the classroom through her complete immersion in the lecture or laboratory activity. She is a wonderful student to see every day.” Mr. Mike Warren speaks very highly of Stephaney, “She is a fantastic student and person. She has been an asset to the classroom, department, and Science Olympiad throughout her four years at Willowbrook. Her generous nature, relentless work ethic, and enthusiastic leadership will be missed.” Stephaney will be attending the University of Wisconsin in Madison beginning in the fall, where she will study Biochemistry with the hopes of going into Pharmacy. We wish Stephaney the best of luck and look forward to hearing about her accomplishments in the future.

Social Studies Department Michael Lopez The Social Studies Department is proud to recognize Michael Lopez as our Outstanding Senior for the 2015- 2016 school year. Michael has been an outstanding performer in all of his Social Studies classes during the past four years, as well as an active participant and leader in Social Studies co-curricular activities. His passion for Social Studies dates back to 3rd grade where his teacher instilled in him a love for geography and maps. That grew throughout the years in to a broad excitement for politics and history as well. Michael has a great appreciation for his parents who have always encouraged him to be whatever he wants to be and given him every opportunity to be successful. Michael will attend college next year to begin his path toward becoming a lawyer. Congratulations, Michael!

World Language Department Zachary Orozen Learning Spanish is not as easy as uno, dos, tres. In order to be an outstanding Spanish learner you have to be an individual who is dedicated to not only learning how to attend to grammar, but also learn about the culture that this language comes from. I had the pleasure of teaching ZachO, and from the first day, Zach impressed me with his ability to be articulate about difficult concepts in Spanish. Every day he is always one of the first students to arrive with a smile on his face ready for the lesson of the day. He considers the subtleties within the culture of the Spanish speaking world, always eager to learn about different traditions and holidays genuinely enjoying being able to be a part of these celebrations. His caring nature and personality allow him to work well with others in a team setting. Zach enjoys communicating to Spanish speakers and does not mind making mistakes. We have been doing Skype sessions with a class in Liceo Yobilo that is learning English in Chile. Every time I see that Zach puts in 100% to be able to have a meaningful conversation with these students from Chile. Thank you ZachO for being an outstanding Spanish learner!

The Warrior Award Each and every day at Willowbrook High School, there are countless acts of humility, kindness, bravery, and courage that go unnoticed. There are many among us who silently conquer adversity and defy the odds that have been placed against them...without calling attention to themselves...and while maintaining a positive attitude no matter how unfair or difficult their circumstances appear to be. The Warrior Award hopes to shed light on these exceptional individuals....individuals who prove that heroism is not a trait only reserved for Hollywood superheroes or famous athletes...... but that the real heroes often walk amongst us.
