The sportsmanship of the spectators plays a vital role in the continuing spirit and success of the Ryder Cup. NOW UNDER BLACK, A CARD -- SATURDAY The rapping, at first tentative and polite, grows insistent. Then we hear someone getting out of bed. MILES (O.S.) ...the fuck... A door is opened, and the black gives way to blinding white light, the way one experiences the first glimpse of day amid, say, a hangover. A worker, RAUL, is there. MILES (O.S.) Yeah? RAUL Hi, Miles. Can you move your car, please? MILES (O.S.) What for? RAUL The painters got to put the truck in, and you didn’t park too good. MILES (O.S.) (a sigh, then --) Yeah, hold on. • History of Royal Cromer Golf Club Established 1888
History of Royal Cromer Golf Club established 1888 Information obtained from minute books, letters, members records, journals and periodicals. Royal Cromer Golf Club History Established 1888 Royal Cromer Golf Club owes its existence to the enthusiasm and love of the game of a Mr. Henry Broadhurst M.P., a Scot who lived at 19, Buckingham Street, The Strand, London. In the 1880's, whilst holidaying in Cromer, he recognised the potential of land to the seaward of the Lighthouse as a possible site for a Links Course. The popularity of North Norfolk at this time had been noted in the London City Press in a report dated 5th September 1886: "The public are greatly indebted to railway enterprise for the opening up of the East Coast. More bracing air and delightful sands are not to be found in any part of England. The only drawback is that the country is rather flat. This remark, however, does not apply to Cromer, which bids fair to become the most popular watering place, it being entirely free from objectionable features". The site of the proposed golf course was owned by the then Lord Suffield KCB, who kindly consented to the request of Broadhurst and some twenty other enthusiasts to rent the land. The Club was instituted in the Autumn of 1887 with Lord Suffield as President. Doubtless it was his friendship and influence with the Prince of Wales which precipitated the Prince's gracious patronage of the infant club on 25th December 1887. Thus Cromer had a Royal Golf Club even before its official opening the following January.

We thank Jennifer Brown for providing us with a condensed ver- sion of her STATA code, providing her weather and Official World Golf Ranking data, and providing lists of events employed in her study. We show that Brown's conclusions are based on a problematic empirical design, which if corrected yields no evidence of a superstar effect.

PRE-TOURNAMENT INTERVIEW TRANSCRIPT: COLIN MONTGOMERIE Thursday, February 13, 2014 DAVE SENKO: Well, Colin, thanks for joining us. COLIN MONTGOMERIE: Not at all, thank you. DAVE SENKO: A T-10 last week. COLIN MONTGOMERIE: T-10, that's what you call it over here. DAVE SENKO: And you had kind of -- you were all over the world prior to that. COLIN MONTGOMERIE: Yes, I was. DAVE SENKO: Maybe fill us in on the last few weeks, I know you were in South Africa. COLIN MONTGOMERIE: Sure we started in South Africa in January, then we moved on to the Middle East for three tournaments there. Then across to Florida from the Middle East, which is a nine hour time difference and I really took a long -- I'm taking longer as I get older to get over the jet lag. I used to be quite good at it 25 years ago, but now it's taking longer so hopefully this week I can do better than T-10 as they say. That's tied. We would call it 10th equal, you call it T-10. It's the same, just a different wording. You've changed it. DAVE SENKO: How did you play last week? COLIN MONTGOMERIE: Yeah, I mean, you've got to -- I found, I keep on saying this, if I ever underestimated anything, it's the standard of play out here. The standard of play is extremely good. I didn't see 60 last week. I must admit that was a fantastic score for Michael Allen and all credit to him for hanging on.

Ballesteros turned professional in March 1974 at the age of 16. In 1976, he burst onto the international scene with a second-place finish in The Open Championship; he went on to win the European Tour Order of Merit (money title) that year, and repeated his Order of Merit win the following two years. Ballesteros went on to win five major championships: The Masters: 1980, 1983 His 1980 win was the first at Augusta by a European player. The Open Championship: 1979, 1984, 1988.
